Texas Instruments acquired Harris Semiconductor’s commercial and standard-military logic product line in 1998—not Harris Semiconductor itself. The deal covered the CD4000, HC4, HCT, FCT and ACT logic families, along with inventory and intellectual-property rights. Harris retained its radiation-hardened logic products.
What did TI buy from Harris?
On November 6, 1998, EDN reported that TI had agreed to acquire Harris Semiconductor’s commercial and military standard-logic product line. The package included inventory and rights associated with five standard-logic series. TI planned to produce the products at its Sherman, Texas, wafer facility. The transaction did not include Harris operations, manufacturing facilities or employees, and its financial terms were not disclosed.
A companion EDN report described the purchase as rights to the commercial and standard-military logic lines, with Harris serving as an interim foundry during the transition. Completion was subject to government review. TI’s corporate history records the Harris logic product line as a 1998 acquisition.
Which Harris logic families became part of TI’s portfolio?

These family names identify the scope of the product-line transfer, not a guarantee that every historical device, package or grade remains orderable today. EDN put the standard-logic semiconductor segment at $2.5 billion in 1998, citing Insight Onsite; it characterized growth as weak while noting that standard-logic functions remained widely used in system designs.

Why did TI and Harris make the deal?
TI said the acquisition would broaden its logic portfolio and extend its offerings to existing and new customers. An EDN report quoted a TI spokesman: “TI believes the Harris logic products will further extend its portfolio and offerings to new and existing customers.” A companion report quoted TI saying the acquisition would make it more competitive across logic lines by broadening its portfolio.
Harris said logic no longer fit its strategic focus. It wanted to concentrate resources on power, communications and its newly formed space-and-defense business. As a Harris spokesman put it to EDN, “Logic doesn’t fit into our strategic focus in power, communications and the newly formed space/defense business.” Harris retained its radiation-hardened logic families.

Could customers keep ordering Harris parts?
TI’s official Harris-product customer Q&A said customers could continue ordering military devices using Harris datasheet part numbers. TI also said it would offer common devices to both TI and Harris datasheets and had no plans to discontinue Harris device types other than discontinuations Harris had already announced. That was the transition policy described in the Q&A; it does not establish current stock or lead times.

- Order by the Harris standard part number when you need the Harris datasheet version.
- Order by the TI standard part number when you need the TI datasheet version.
- Order by the SMD number when the device must comply with that military drawing.
Depending on the SMD and ordering route, devices could be marked with TI or Harris part numbers. A shared device function or family name alone therefore does not establish that two order codes have identical documentation or qualification status.
What happened to Harris military logic after the sale?
The military product transition was planned in stages rather than treated as an automatic change of manufacturing source. TI’s customer Q&A described a three-stage qualification path:

TI said it would retain existing screening and acceptance testing unless an elimination was fully qualified under MIL-PRF-38535 QML change procedures. The Q&A describes the qualification approach; it does not, by itself, establish that a particular device completed each stage.

For a legacy replacement, start with the exact function and orderable part number, then compare the documentation and physical specification rather than relying on the family prefix alone. Check:

- Manufacturing source, package, operating-temperature range and qualification status.
- Present availability and lead time with the seller; the 1998 acquisition and TI’s historical policy do not prove that a specific part is currently stocked.
“CD4000 series logic IC” is a useful starting search phrase for that acquired family, but it is not a complete substitute specification. Confirm the exact logic function, supply voltage, package and grade against the required datasheet before accepting a proposed replacement.
