On April 16, 2026, the Linux Foundation announced that the O-RAN Software Community (O-RAN SC) was formally moving under the LF Networking (LFN) umbrella. O-RAN SC develops open-source software for radio access networks; the O-RAN ALLIANCE provides the architecture and specifications that its software aligns with. The organizations say the integration is intended to bring O-RAN SC into closer collaboration with other LFN projects under unified governance.
What is the O-RAN Software Community?
O-RAN SC is an open-source software community focused on the radio access network (RAN), the part of a mobile network that connects user devices to the wider network. Its stated mission is to develop modular, open, intelligent, efficient, and agile software for disaggregated RAN systems, aligned with O-RAN ALLIANCE architecture and specifications. The Linux Foundation announcement describes its purpose as developing “open source software for the RAN – the next major frontier for the open source community.” (Linux Foundation, April 16, 2026)
What does O-RAN SC do, and how is it different from the O-RAN ALLIANCE?
The names are related, but the organizations have different roles. The O-RAN ALLIANCE supplies the open architecture and specifications referenced by the community; O-RAN SC develops open-source software aligned with that context. It is not the standards body, and its software-development work should not be confused with creating the ALLIANCE’s specifications.
LFN, in turn, provides the project umbrella and shared collaboration setting. The Linux Foundation says O-RAN SC was established as a collaboration between the O-RAN ALLIANCE and the Linux Foundation, and that the two will continue collaborating throughout the move and support the initiative going forward. - Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Why did O-RAN SC join LF Networking?
LFN said that adding O-RAN SC extends its work across the end-to-end network stack. The O-RAN SC project site describes the 2026 integration as a way to enable closer, more streamlined collaboration with other LFN projects under unified governance. (O-RAN SC project site) LFN’s portfolio spans networking projects, providing the broader setting for that collaboration. (LF Networking projects)
These are the organizations’ stated aims. The announcement does not demonstrate that the organizational change itself improves network performance, lowers costs, ensures interoperability, or guarantees commercial deployment.

Is O-RAN SC now part of the Linux Foundation?
Yes. The Linux Foundation announced on April 16, 2026, that O-RAN SC was formally migrating under LF Networking, a Linux Foundation initiative. The current O-RAN SC site identifies it as an LFN project and describes the 2026 integration. The site labels its latest release “M Release.” (O-RAN SC project site)
The public material does not give a detailed migration schedule or a full account of governance changes, and it does not quantify adoption or technical and commercial results. The project’s placement under LFN is clear; the available sources do not establish that every aspect of integration is complete.
Quick Recap
