A broken picture icon means the browser could not retrieve or render the image requested by the page. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the image URL may be wrong, the file or server may be unavailable, the network or browser may be blocking the request, or the file may be corrupt or unsupported. The page itself can load normally because HTML and images are fetched as separate resources.
What the broken picture icon actually tells you
When an image fails, browsers commonly show a small placeholder or broken-image symbol where the picture should be. The symbol confirms only that image loading or rendering failed. It does not identify which part failed.
The failure can occur at several points:
- The HTML points to an empty, misspelled, or incorrectly capitalized path.
- The referenced file is missing or cannot be reached from the server.
- The server, network, or browser returns an error before the image arrives.
- The response is not a usable image, or the file is damaged.
- A browser security rule, cross-origin rule, or Content Security Policy (CSP) rejects the source.
That is why guessing at a single fix is inefficient. First establish the scope and then inspect the actual image request.
Start with the scope of the failure
Scope is the fastest way to choose the right next check. It narrows the possibilities but does not prove a cause.

Reload once before changing anything. If only one site is affected, the problem is more likely local to that site or its image resources; if many sites fail, investigate your connection, device, or browser first.
What visitors can do without editing the website
Reload and test the scope
- Reload the page.
- Open another page on the same website.
- Open a different website and check whether its images load.
- If multiple sites fail, verify your internet connection and try the browser or device settings that could prevent loading.
A reload can recover a temporary network or server condition, but it cannot repair a wrong path or a missing file.
Try the image URL directly
If you can copy the image address, open it in a new tab. A successful image response indicates that the file is reachable and shifts attention to how the page embeds it, a policy restriction, or browser rendering. If the direct request also fails, the path, server response, or file itself needs attention from the site owner.
Report the exact location
When you do not control the site, send the owner the page URL, the location of the broken image, your browser, and whether other sites worked. That information is more useful than reporting only “the picture is missing.”

How a site owner diagnoses the request
1. Inspect the request in developer tools
- Open the affected page.
- Open the browser’s developer tools and select the Network panel.
- Reload the page so the image request is recorded.
- Filter the request list for images, or search for the image filename.
- Select the request and record its URL, response or error, and whether the returned content is actually an image.
This separates a bad URL from a failed response and from a response that cannot be rendered. Also check the browser console for cross-origin or content-policy messages.

2. Verify the published source path
Inspect the rendered HTML and compare the image’s src value with the file that is deployed. Check every character, including:
- Spelling and capitalization of the filename.
- Relative versus absolute directory paths.
- File extensions and URL encoding for special characters.
- The host and protocol used for the image.
The HTML page and image are separate resources. A page can therefore be available while a typo in src points to nowhere.
<img src="/images/team-photo.webp" alt="Our support team">Confirm that /images/team-photo.webp exists at that exact published location. A file that exists only on a developer’s computer, or in a source directory that is not deployed, will still produce a broken icon for visitors.

3. Check the response and the file
If the request appears in Network but fails, note the reported status or error and inspect the response body and headers. Make sure the server returns the image file rather than an error document, login page, or empty response. Then verify that the stored file opens normally and is in an image format supported by the browsers you target.
A corrupt file can have a correct URL and still fail to render. Re-export or replace it, redeploy it, and request the published URL again. Do not diagnose from the filename alone; inspect what the server actually sends.

4. Review browser and site restrictions
Console messages can reveal a cross-origin failure or a Content Security Policy violation. CSP’s img-src directive controls which image origins are permitted. If the image is hosted on another origin, add only the required origin to the policy. Do not solve a single broken image by allowing every source.
When a policy change is made, reload with developer tools open and confirm that the image request is now permitted. A policy fix does not help if the URL or file is still wrong.

Test the deployed URL, not just a local development preview. Reload it in the target browsers and inspect the image request again. This catches deployment paths, case-sensitive storage, CDN or server configuration, and policy differences that a local file cannot reveal.
Common failure stages and the appropriate fix

Use alt text as a reliable fallback
Every informative image should have text that conveys its purpose when the picture is unavailable. This helps screen-reader users and anyone experiencing a failed request, but it does not repair the network or file problem.

<img src="/images/ornament.svg" alt="">Visual browsers may omit the broken-image symbol for an image with alt="", which avoids adding meaningless decoration to the failure state. Do not use empty alt text for an image that communicates information.
How to verify a fix without guessing
- Open the deployed page in a fresh tab.
- Reload with the Network panel recording.
- Confirm the image request uses the intended URL.
- Confirm the response is the image itself and is not blocked.
- Check the image at the page’s normal size and at any responsive layouts that use a different source.
- Review the console for remaining policy or cross-origin errors.
- Test with the final browser and device combinations your site supports.
If the image works only after a cache refresh, check whether an old HTML reference or cached asset is still being served. The durable fix is to correct the published reference and deployment, not to ask every visitor to clear a cache.

Troubleshooting when the first fix does not work
The path looks correct, but the icon remains
Inspect the request rather than the source file tree. The deployed HTML may differ from local files, the filename may differ only by capitalization, or the server may be returning an error document at the image URL.
The image opens directly but not inside the page
Look for console messages about cross-origin access or CSP. The direct tab test proves reachability, not that the embedding page is allowed to use the resource.
Only some browsers show the icon
Check the file’s integrity and format support in the affected browsers. A damaged or unsupported image can appear normal in one environment and fail in another.
All images disappeared after a deployment
Compare the new published HTML paths and site policy with the previous version. A shared directory, URL prefix, or img-src change can break many otherwise valid references at once.
The screenshot shows a blank page
First determine whether the page itself loaded and whether the image request failed.
