STEM competitions range from individual research fairs to team robotics, multi-event science contests, and engineering design challenges. The right fit depends on what students want to do, how they qualify, the time and adult support available, and the rules for their local event. Start by comparing formats and eligibility; check the organizer’s current rules before beginning work or buying equipment.

What STEM competitions can students enter?

These U.S.-based examples illustrate how much the work and entry routes can differ. They are not a complete international directory, and a national program page may not settle local availability, fees, or deadlines.

Competition What students do How participation works Where to confirm current details
Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Conduct and present a research project under rules covering safety, research procedures, and eligibility. Students qualify through a Society for Science-affiliated fair; they cannot enter ISEF independently. ISEF FAQ and International Rules
FIRST LEGO League Work as a team on season-specific robotics and STEM activities; the Challenge includes robot-game matches. Age or grade bands, editions, and availability vary by region. Coach or facilitator needs depend on the format. FIRST LEGO League and How to Get Started
Science Olympiad Compete as a team across science and engineering events, following event-specific rules. Team qualification and tournament details depend on the current policies and local competition. Science Olympiad policies and the local tournament’s current rules
NASA Student Launch Develop an engineering design proposal and proceed through staged design reviews toward a launch. Middle- and high-school teams must qualify through the American Rocketry Challenge or Rockets for Schools. NASA Student Launch Challenge and its linked handbook

Research fair: investigate a question

A research fair suits students who want to ask a question, plan a study, collect and interpret evidence, and explain their methods and findings. ISEF is not an open sign-up destination: the Society for Science FAQ describes advancement through local and affiliated fairs, and says students cannot represent themselves at ISEF.

Robotics: build, code, and collaborate

FIRST LEGO League is organized into season-specific editions and age or grade bands, with regional differences. In the 2026–2027 season, FIRST identifies SPIKE technology for the BIOGLOW Founders Edition Challenge and LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits for the Future Edition. Those requirements do not apply to every STEM competition—or automatically to every FIRST edition.

Multi-event science: prepare for different event rules

Science Olympiad policies address ethics, team qualification, scoring, and competition resources. Since individual events and tournaments have their own details, use the current rules for the student’s local tournament rather than assuming that one general description covers every event.

Engineering design: progress through reviews

NASA describes Student Launch as an engineering design challenge involving proposals and a series of design reviews. The program page links a 2027 handbook with rules, proposal guidance, and a timeline; it also says participating teams complete the final competition launch in Huntsville.

How do I choose the right competition?

Compare the actual work and entry conditions, not just a competition’s reputation or selectivity. Before committing, students, teachers, and coaches should establish the following with the organizer and local event:

  • Eligibility: age, grade, location, and any school or team restrictions.
  • Entry route: individual registration or participation through a school, coach, local fair, or qualifying event.
  • Work format: research, building and coding, timed events, design reviews, presentations, or a combination.
  • Season logistics: dates, local availability, registration deadlines, advancement rules, and costs.
  • Approvals and safety: research review, signed forms, safety plans, permissions, and adult supervision.
  • Equipment: what is required, optional, reusable, or supplied by the event.
  • Judging: how work is evaluated and what students must explain, demonstrate, or document.
  • Practical fit: whether the work suits students’ interests, available time, adult support, and resources.

For a direct comparison between two or more options, use those same criteria side by side. Confirm local fees and availability with the event itself; national pages may not include them.

How do I find a science fair near me?

For an ISEF-bound project, begin with the student’s school or local science fair and ask which affiliated fair serves the area. The Society for Science FAQ explains that students generally advance through competition levels to an affiliated fair, and that the affiliated fair manages its own event while observing Society rules. The FAQ does not make ISEF a direct-entry competition.

Ask the local fair about its calendar, registration process, project categories, advancement route, and contact for research review. Affiliation and event procedures are local, so a national overview cannot establish which fair a particular student should enter.

How do I know whether a research project is eligible?

Do not rely on a general project guide or this overview to decide that a project qualifies. Society for Science publishes ISEF International Rules annually; the official rules page lists the 2027 rules and modifications for the 2026–2027 cycle, along with current forms, display and safety rules, and AI-use guidance. The rules apply to ISEF and Society-affiliated fairs and address student and participant welfare, regulatory compliance, safe lab practices, environmental protection, and eligibility.

Before experimentation, contact the local fair’s Scientific Review Committee about the applicable rules—especially if a project involves human participants, vertebrate animals, or potentially hazardous biological agents. Use the current rules and the affiliated fair’s interpretation for the student’s circumstances.

Do students need a teacher or coach?

Adult responsibilities depend on the format. FIRST publishes coach and student resources, and specifies that traditional FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams need two adult coaches, while its Class Pack format uses one facilitator. Research competitions may also require adult support for review, forms, and documentation. Check the selected program’s current instructions to learn who must supervise, approve, or submit each item.

What equipment does a team need?

Choose the competition and edition before purchasing materials. For FIRST’s 2026–2027 season, the BIOGLOW Founders Edition Challenge uses SPIKE technology, while the Future Edition lists Computer Science & AI kits. FIRST’s getting-started page provides resources such as training, guides, notebooks, and a Robot Game Rulebook. Check that page and the local event’s directions for the required kit bundle and registration details; these robotics materials are not general supplies for ISEF, Science Olympiad, NASA Student Launch, or all FIRST formats.

For any program, distinguish mandatory equipment from optional or reusable items and materials supplied at the event. NASA Student Launch teams should use the linked 2027 handbook for its rules and requirements. Avoid buying based on another season’s list or a broad description of the competition.

What to verify before the season starts

  1. Identify the exact program, edition, and local event. A name alone may not identify the relevant age band, format, or regional offering.
  2. Confirm eligibility and the route in. Ask whether the student enters directly or needs a school, coach, affiliated fair, or qualifying competition.
  3. Read the current rules and schedule. Record deadlines, advancement steps, judging expectations, and any required reviews or documentation.
  4. Assign adult responsibilities. Clarify coaching, supervision, approvals, and who handles forms or submissions.
  5. Set the practical plan. Match the workload, costs, equipment, and available time to the students and resources before starting a project or making purchases.
