A game near the top of Steam’s live Top Sellers chart is attracting substantial spending—not necessarily selling the most copies. And a reported 2025 earnings milestone for thousands of games shows opportunity on the platform, not a prediction of what any one developer will earn.
What Steam’s sales figures and rankings actually measure
Steam’s live Top Sellers chart is a revenue ranking with a short, rolling time window. Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains: “For each game, we roll up all the player spending from the trailing 24 hours, and then add extra weight to spending in the last 3 hours.” Valve’s Top Sellers documentation says that spending can include base-game purchases, downloadable content (DLC), and in-game transactions.
That makes the chart useful for seeing where player spending is concentrated right now, but it is not a unit-sales chart. A game can rank highly because players are buying an expansion or spending inside the game, even if it is not selling more base-game copies than every other title.
Rankings vary by region and presentation
Steam provides a global view and charts for popular countries, so a title’s position can differ between a local chart and the global list. Free-to-play games can appear when purchases of paid add-ons contribute to their revenue. Steam may also combine multiple editions of a game to avoid duplicate chart entries. The lists respect users’ content preferences, and Steam offers filters to hide games already owned or free-to-play titles.

What the reported 2025 earnings threshold says—and does not say
PC Gamer reported on March 11, 2026, that Valve said 5,863 games earned more than $100,000 in revenue on Steam in 2025. PC Gamer’s report attributes the figure to a Valve presentation at GDC. It is a count of games above a revenue threshold, not a typical-game result or an estimate of developer take-home income.
The figure does not provide the full earnings distribution, identify what each game cost to make, or show what remained after refunds, taxes, platform terms, and other expenses. It also does not establish a year-over-year growth rate or a specific all-time Steam sales record. “Record sales” needs a defined measure—such as gross revenue, units sold, or concurrent players—and a defined comparison period before it can support a precise record claim.

What Steam’s sales mean for PC game buyers
A Top Sellers position can help surface games that are drawing spending, but it does not tell you whether a game is a good value or right for you. Because the ranking includes DLC and in-game purchases, check the base-game price and what is included rather than treating rank as a measure of copies sold or overall quality.
- Compare the price and edition you intend to buy; editions can differ in included content.
- Read reviews and check whether the features or play style fit what you want.
- Look at the DLC and in-game purchase model if ongoing spending matters to you.
- Check whether you are viewing a country-specific chart or the global view, and use Steam’s filters to narrow the list.
What Steam’s sales mean for developers
The reported 2025 threshold indicates that thousands of games surpassed $100,000 in revenue on Steam, but it does not tell a developer what their own launch will earn. The ranking and threshold are different indicators: one reflects weighted spending over a trailing 24-hour window, while the other counts games crossing an annual revenue threshold.

Steam also documents an option for developers to organize third-party sale events and submit sale pages for review. Its 2025 sale-page materials advise allowing a few business days for review.
