Steam Deck compatibility ratings are Valve’s summary of how a game performs against defined compatibility checks—not a guarantee that every player will have the same experience. Verified is the strongest default-compatibility result, Playable signals that a game works but may need manual setup, Unsupported means Valve currently identifies an incompatibility, and Unknown means a review has not been completed. Check the game’s compatibility details as well as its badge before deciding whether a caveat matters to you.

What Valve checks

Valve reviews whether a game works and is usable on Steam Deck across several defined areas. The checks focus on compatibility and usability, not on whether the game is good or whether it will suit every player.

  • Controls: The Deck’s physical controls should work across the game without requiring in-game settings changes to enable them. The default configuration should use appropriate input prompts, and text-entry tasks should be possible with the on-screen keyboard or an equivalent controller-accessible method.
  • Performance: Valve’s Steamworks checklist calls for a playable frame rate under the default configuration; its current target is 30 fps at 800p.
  • Display and text: The game must run at a supported resolution, and interface text must be legible on the Deck screen. Valve’s detailed checklist includes a minimum text-size measure and recommends a larger target when practical.
  • Launch flow: Compatibility warnings should not interrupt play, and any launcher should be navigable with a controller.
  • Proton and system support: For games running through Proton, the game and its middleware—including anti-cheat—must be supported. Blocking Proton bugs or Proton-specific performance problems can lead to an Unsupported rating pending fixes.

These checks cover specified conditions, including default performance and launch behavior. They do not assess every scene, future update, player configuration, or individual preference. Valve’s compatibility checklist describes the criteria.

What each Steam Deck rating means

Rating Practical meaning
Verified The game passes the compatibility checks without configuration work being required to access all its functionality.
Playable The game functions on Deck, but may require manual setup or a workaround—for example, choosing a community controller layout, opening the on-screen keyboard, or using the touchscreen to operate a launcher.
Unsupported Valve currently identifies an incompatibility with Proton or specific hardware that prevents the game from functioning as expected on the device. It is a current classification, not proof that the game can never work.
Unknown Valve has not completed a compatibility review, so its reviewed compatibility information is unavailable. This is not a tested failure.

Valve’s Steam Deck software guide gives the customer-facing meanings and points players to each game’s compatibility details. The more detailed Steamworks documentation defines the four statuses and review criteria.

What a rating does not promise

A permanent result

A rating can change as a game, Proton support, or Steam Deck features change. Valve described ratings as a snapshot in a March 4, 2022 update: “Whenever we talk about compatibility rating numbers, we emphasize that this is just a snapshot of a single moment, and that ratings change over time.” Check the current Store or Library listing rather than relying on an old rating. A substitute for the detail panel

The badge is the summary. The compatibility details identify which requirements a Playable or Unsupported game does not meet. A touchscreen launcher step may be minor for one person; a control or anti-cheat issue may be decisive for another. Read the stated caveat instead of treating all games with the same label as equivalent.

A judgment about your particular use

The review uses defined checks for controls, legibility, launch flow, default performance, and software support. Your experience can still depend on settings, play style, or circumstances outside those checks. That is a limit of what the criteria establish, not a separate promise from Valve.

An answer to every game question

Compatibility is distinct from other requirements. For example, Valve says installed games can be played offline unless a particular game requires an internet connection. A compatibility badge alone does not tell you whether that game has such a requirement; see Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.

How to use a rating before playing or buying

  1. Open the game in the Steam Store or your Library and find its Steam Deck compatibility section. Valve surfaces ratings in both places to help inform playing and purchasing decisions.
  2. Read the badge and, if there is a caveat, the compatibility details describing the unmet criterion.
  3. Decide whether that specific issue matters to you. Consider the workaround required, controller usability, text legibility, launcher steps, default performance, and any Proton or anti-cheat limitation.
  4. If the rating is Unknown, treat it as missing Valve-reviewed information—not as evidence that the game fails. Look for current game-specific information from the developer or players before relying on it.

Valve says reviews are ongoing and ratings may be updated. Its March 2022 announcement said more than a thousand games were Verified or Playable at that time; that is a historical figure, not a current catalog count. Valve’s current Deck Verified page notes that new games and updates arrive daily but does not give a dated exact total of reviewed games.
