Student robotics competitions give participants a chance to apply STEM concepts while designing, building, programming, testing, and improving a robot. Depending on the program, students may also research a real-world problem, present a solution, coordinate with teammates, and reflect on how they work together. These are skills students get to practice—not guaranteed outcomes for every participant.
Technical skills: designing, building, and coding
Students turn a challenge into a working machine. That process can involve applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; choosing a design; constructing a robot; and programming it to complete tasks. They then test how it performs and make changes when the design or code falls short.
FIRST describes its robotics programs as hands-on STEM learning, while VEX presents its competitions as opportunities to build STEM skills through practical competition. The exact technical work depends on the program and season: some challenges place more emphasis on programming, while others also test mechanical design, construction, or how a robot is operated during a match. FIRST LEGO League program overview; VEX competition programs.
Problem-solving and engineering design
A game or mission gives teams a goal and constraints. Students have to interpret what is being asked, decide which tasks to prioritize, develop a strategy, and see whether their robot can carry it out. Testing provides feedback: a team may revise the mechanism, code, or plan and try again.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FIRST LEGO League Challenge includes robot-game and robot-design categories and asks students to engage with complex challenges. That structure offers practice in breaking a problem into manageable parts and improving a solution through iteration; it does not mean every team follows the same process or achieves the same results. FIRST LEGO League Challenge.
Teamwork, communication, and time management
Robots are often the product of shared work. Students may need to divide responsibilities, coordinate design and programming, explain decisions, and adapt when a test or match does not go to plan. Preparing for an event also gives teams a concrete deadline around which to organize their work.

VEX identifies communication, collaboration, time management, and leadership among the skills associated with its competitions. Its Teamwork Challenge has two teams work together to maximize their score, making coordination part of the match itself—not just a team-preparation task. The role teamwork plays varies by competition format. VEX competition programs.
Research and presentation in programs that include projects
Some competitions ask for work beyond the robot. FIRST LEGO League Challenge includes research and judged categories alongside its robot game. Students may investigate a real-world problem, develop an idea, and explain their work to judges or an audience. This can give them practice in gathering and organizing information, communicating a solution, and describing how their team reached it. FIRST LEGO League Challenge.

Do not assume every robotics competition has a research project or presentation. Check the current program and event requirements to see whether these are part of the experience.
Why the skills vary by competition
“Robotics competition” covers different age groups, rules, equipment, and event formats. One program may give substantial attention to research and judged presentations; another may center on coordinated play in matches. The balance of autonomous programming, driver control, design, and teamwork can also differ.

What skill gains can you reasonably expect?
Program descriptions show what students are asked to do and what organizers aim to develop. They do not, on their own, prove that participation causes a particular improvement or that every student gains every skill. A careful way to describe the experience is that students can apply STEM, practice problem-solving and teamwork, and gain experience communicating their work.
VEX’s competition page reports that 95% of participants say their interest in STEM areas and STEM-related careers increased, but the page information available here does not establish the claim’s publication year or study details. It should not be treated as independent proof of skill gains or generalized to all robotics competitions. VEX competition programs.
