Entry-level AI employers in both the UK and India look for a combination of technical foundations and evidence that you can apply them. Programming, data handling, data science and machine-learning concepts are the common base. UK employers report particular difficulty finding people who understand AI concepts and algorithms and can move from theory to practice. Indian campus and early-career employers add learning agility, adaptability, collaboration and role-specific knowledge to that technical base.
These are market-level patterns, not a universal checklist for every vacancy. The UK and India studies use different samples and methods, so their percentages cannot be combined into a single ranking. Read the live job description for the exact role, location, eligibility and qualification requirements.
The core skills shared across UK and Indian entry-level roles
Most junior AI jobs sit somewhere on a spectrum from building models to applying existing AI systems in a business function. Employers therefore assess both what you know and whether you can turn that knowledge into a reliable result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProgramming and software development
Be ready to write maintainable code, not just notebook snippets. A junior machine-learning engineer, AI engineer or data scientist should be able to use a mainstream programming language, structure a small project, work with files or APIs, test assumptions and explain the code to another person. Software-development ability is especially relevant when a role involves deploying a model, integrating an AI service or building data pipelines.

Data handling and analysis
Employers expect you to obtain, clean, inspect and document data before modelling it. Useful evidence includes handling missing and inconsistent values, choosing an appropriate representation, checking for leakage, creating reproducible transformations and interpreting results. Data literacy also matters in AI-adjacent roles such as data analyst or software engineer working with AI.
Machine-learning concepts and algorithms
You should be able to explain the purpose and limits of common supervised and unsupervised methods, select a sensible baseline, split data correctly, choose evaluation measures and identify overfitting. For many entry-level roles, clear reasoning about a smaller model is more persuasive than a long list of advanced techniques that you cannot explain.
Evidence of practical application
A project, internship, apprenticeship, coursework artifact or work sample can show that you can carry an idea through data preparation, implementation, evaluation and communication. Practical evidence is important because UK employers report a continuing theory-to-practice gap, while Indian campus hiring increasingly considers role-specific capability and internships alongside academic knowledge.
What UK employers report
The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) AI Labour Market Survey 2025, published on 28 January 2026, combined surveys and interviews about skills gaps and changing needs in the UK AI sector. Its findings describe employer-reported shortages rather than a guarantee about any individual vacancy.
Understanding AI concepts and algorithms is the largest reported gap
Sixty percent of respondents identified understanding AI concepts and algorithms as a skills gap, up from 55% five years earlier. That makes fundamentals a high-value preparation area: know what an algorithm is optimising, what assumptions it makes, how to evaluate it and when not to use it.
Technical shortages affect business goals
Twenty-eight percent of surveyed organisations said technical-skills shortages had affected their business goals. A candidate can address this concern by showing software practices as well as theory: version control, readable documentation, testing, reproducible environments and a short explanation of how a prototype could be operated safely.

Employers still struggle to bridge theory and practice
The survey identifies lack of work experience and insufficient technical skills as barriers when organisations fill AI roles. It also reports that 88% of surveyed organisations used on-the-job training rather than structured education and training programmes. This makes coachability valuable, but it does not remove the need to demonstrate a useful starting level.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Apprenticeships and graduate training are growing, but unevenly
Apprenticeships represented 19% of AI hires in 2025, compared with 3% in 2020. Only 13% of graduate schemes in the survey included AI training. When comparing offers, check whether training is formal, delivered on the job, or largely your responsibility; the label “graduate” does not tell you which model applies.
What UK vacancy data can and cannot tell you
A separate DSIT and Department for Culture, Media and Sport analysis of AI expert vacancies found that 69% of postings in that expert-role group were for Data Scientists and 20% for Software Engineers. Thirty-seven percent requested a PhD and 29% a master’s degree. The group includes expert roles and is not an entry-level-only sample. These figures identify technical families and the credentials common in specialist postings; they do not mean that every graduate or junior AI applicant needs a postgraduate degree.
What Indian employers report
Indian evidence is concentrated on early-career and cross-sector hiring rather than a single national database of junior AI vacancies. It points to technical ability combined with adaptable working skills and domain context.
Campus hiring rewards learning agility and collaboration
Deloitte India’s Campus Workforce Trends 2026 surveyed 257 organisations across 505 campuses. Thirty-five percent of organisations said AI adoption was creating new entry-level roles or skill requirements, up from 21% in FY25. Alongside technical capability, the study highlights learning agility, adaptability, collaboration and role-specific skills.
For a graduate, this means an interviewer may test how you learn an unfamiliar library, respond to changing requirements, work with a non-technical stakeholder or divide a project among teammates. Prepare examples that show a measurable result and what changed after feedback.

Digital, data and domain skills remain central
The NIIT India Skills Gap Report 2026, produced with YouGov and covering students, professionals, recruiters, CXOs and academic leaders, places digital and data skills among the top three critical capabilities for the next three to five years across its surveyed groups. Recruiters and CXOs also prioritised technical and domain-specific expertise supported by project-management and organisational skills.
Consequently, an entry-level AI applicant should connect technical work to a domain problem: forecasting demand, detecting quality issues, automating document classification or improving a customer workflow. You do not need to claim expertise in every industry; demonstrate that you can learn the domain and define the right problem.
Where projected growth fits
A 23 March 2026 Government of India parliamentary answer, citing NASSCOM’s August 2024 report, projected India’s AI talent pool would grow from 6–6.5 lakh professionals to more than 12.5 lakh by 2027 at a 15% compound annual growth rate. This is a projection attributed to NASSCOM and repeated in the government answer, not an observed 2027 result. The answer identifies data science and data curation among areas where AI may create jobs, reinforcing the value of data foundations.

Skills by entry-level AI role family
The title “AI role” covers materially different jobs. Use the role family in the vacancy, not the headline alone, to decide what to practise.
| Role family | Technical emphasis | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Junior machine-learning or AI engineer | Programming, data pipelines, model training, evaluation, software practices and basic deployment | A reproducible project with tests, a clear baseline, error analysis and an explanation of how it could be served |
| Data scientist | Data cleaning, statistics, experimentation, machine learning, visualisation and communication | An analysis that states the business question, data limitations, method, metric and decision supported by the result |
| Data analyst using AI | SQL or equivalent data querying, data quality, descriptive analysis, dashboards and responsible use of AI tools | A concise report or dashboard showing how analysis changed an operational choice |
| Software engineer working with AI | Software design, APIs, testing, observability and integration of models or AI services | A small application with documented interfaces, failure handling and deployment instructions |
| Domain specialist or AI implementation role | Domain knowledge, workflow mapping, data interpretation, user needs and evaluation of an AI-enabled process | A case study showing requirements, stakeholder trade-offs, acceptance criteria and measured impact |
How to demonstrate the skills employers need
Build one complete, explainable project
- Define a decision. State who needs the output and what action it will support.
- Describe the data. Record its source, time period, fields, missing values, potential bias and any restrictions on use.
- Establish a baseline. Compare your model with a simple rule or statistical method so improvement is meaningful.
- Evaluate honestly. Choose metrics that fit the task, separate training and test data, inspect errors and report uncertainty or known limitations.
- Make it reproducible. Include setup instructions, dependency versions, a predictable way to run the analysis and a short data-preparation script where permitted.
- Explain the outcome. Write a brief summary for a non-specialist, including what the system should not be used for.
A small project completed end to end is usually stronger evidence than several unfinished notebooks. Do not imply that any particular project, course or certificate is required; the point is to make your claimed skills verifiable.
Turn coursework or internships into evidence
Describe your contribution rather than listing the team’s output. Explain the problem, your method, the tools you used, what changed after review and the result. If the work is confidential, remove sensitive data and present the method, evaluation design and lessons without exposing protected information.

Show collaboration and communication
Use a short example of translating a technical issue, resolving a disagreement, receiving feedback or organising delivery. Indian early-career evidence explicitly values collaboration, adaptability and project-management or organisational skills; UK employers’ training model also makes the ability to learn on the job consequential.

- Map each required skill in the vacancy to one concrete project, internship, course artifact or work sample.
- Prepare a two-minute explanation of one project covering the problem, data, method, metric and result.
- Review core concepts: data leakage, overfitting, train-test splitting, class imbalance, model selection and appropriate evaluation metrics.
- Practise a coding or data task without relying on an unexplainable generated answer; be ready to discuss trade-offs and debugging.
- Prepare one example each for learning a new tool, collaborating, handling ambiguous requirements and responding to failure.
- Check the posting’s minimum qualification, location, work-eligibility and sponsorship rules. These vary by employer and are not established by the market studies.
- Ask what training actually exists: structured courses, mentoring, supervised delivery or informal on-the-job learning.
How to compare two opportunities
When two vacancies both use the word “AI,” compare the details below. This prevents you from preparing for advanced model research when the job is primarily data operations or software integration.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Role family | Is the work model development, data science, data engineering, software engineering, analytics or AI implementation in a domain? |
| Technical depth | Does the specification emphasise algorithms and ML theory, or broader programming, data handling and tool application? |
| Practical proof | Does it ask for an internship, apprenticeship, portfolio, coursework artifact or prior applied work? |
| Work and domain skills | How much weight is given to adaptability, collaboration, project delivery and subject-matter knowledge? |
| Credentials | Is a degree or postgraduate qualification an explicit minimum, or merely common in a dataset that includes expert roles? |
| Support and progression | Who provides supervision, what training is available and how is performance assessed during the first year? |
| Location and eligibility | Where is the role based, what work authorisation is required and does the employer state sponsorship conditions? |
Do entry-level AI jobs require a master’s degree?
Not as a universal rule. The UK vacancy analysis’ figures of 37% of expert postings requesting a PhD and 29% requesting a master’s degree describe an expert-role group, not all entry-level jobs. A specific employer may set a postgraduate qualification as a minimum, prefer it, or accept equivalent experience; only the live vacancy can establish which applies. For a junior application, strong fundamentals and credible practical evidence can be relevant even when a postgraduate degree is not listed.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Treating “AI” as one job
Problem: You prepare only deep-learning theory for a role centred on data quality or integration.
Correction: Identify the role family and weight your preparation toward its actual deliverables.

Ignoring responsible practice
Problem: A project reports accuracy without discussing bias, privacy, security, misuse or failure cases.
Correction: Include data permissions, limitations, error analysis and a safe-use boundary in your documentation.
Bottom line for candidates in both markets
Start with programming, data handling and machine-learning fundamentals, then prove that you can apply them to a defined problem. For UK roles, pay particular attention to algorithms, technical depth and the theory-to-practice gap. For Indian early-career roles, add learning agility, adaptability, collaboration, project delivery and domain-specific understanding. Use the vacancy’s role family, qualification wording and work-eligibility rules to set your final priorities; neither country’s evidence supports a single universal checklist.
