Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start with 1080p at 30 fps if your camera or video source can produce it and your internet connection can sustain the recommended incoming bitrate: 14 Mbps for H.264. If that mode is unstable or your source cannot provide it, try 720p at 30 fps, for which YouTube recommends 8 Mbps H.264. These are starting targets—not guarantees that a particular always-on setup will stay stable. Test your actual source, encoder, and connection before leaving the stream unattended.
Why 1080p30 is a sensible starting point
Waterfalls combine constant movement with fine texture, so compression can make detail look soft or blocky. Starting at 1080p30 gives viewers more image detail than 720p30, provided the source captures that detail and the connection can deliver the stream reliably. YouTube publishes general encoder recommendations, not a waterfall-specific resolution rule or comparison test, so 1080p30 is a practical starting choice rather than a universal optimum.
The resolution and bitrate you choose are for the video sent to YouTube—the incoming or ingest stream. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across different devices and networks. That means you do not need to send a separate stream for every viewer quality setting. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance is the reference for the figures below; the page was accessed October 3, 2026, and the reviewed page view did not expose a publication or update date.
Compare YouTube’s recommended bitrates
The table shows YouTube’s recommended incoming video bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These are recommendations for the video stream, not a guaranteed minimum connection speed or proof that a 24/7 setup will be stable.

For a waterfall, begin with 1080p30 rather than choosing a higher mode simply because it is available. Higher resolutions and frame rates require more incoming bitrate and capable source and encoding hardware. YouTube says to choose a quality that can produce a reliable stream on your internet connection and recommends testing the upload bitrate; its guidance does not establish a fixed upload-speed multiplier or a guaranteed stability threshold.
Set the encoder for a dependable ingest
YouTube’s current guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use settings your encoder and YouTube stream configuration both support.

- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Connection: Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP, where your encoder supports it.
- SDR colour: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
If you are streaming in 4K/2160p, note that YouTube says this resolution cannot use the “improve for low-latency” option and is set to normal latency. For a continuous scenic stream, decide whether higher resolution is worth that latency trade-off for your audience.
Test the real setup before leaving it unattended
- Match the intended broadcast: Configure the camera or video source, encoder, frame rate, codec, resolution, and bitrate you plan to use. Include representative waterfall motion and the audio you intend to broadcast.
- Run a test stream: YouTube specifically advises testing before going live, with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
- Inspect the picture: Look for smeared fine detail, blockiness, dropped frames, or interruptions. Check that the video looks acceptable on the devices your viewers are likely to use.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages: The Live Streaming API reports status and health information. Relevant configuration warnings can include low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, or video ingestion starvation.
- Adjust one step at a time: If 1080p30 at the recommended bitrate will not remain stable in your actual setup, test 720p30 at its recommended bitrate. Repeat the test rather than assuming a single short check proves long-run reliability.
Stream-health information can help identify delivery problems, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. The appropriate final mode depends on the actual source output, encoder capability, sustained upload quality, and how much fine detail matters to your viewers.

When to choose another resolution
Choose 720p30 if reliability is the priority
Use 720p30 as the practical fallback when the source, encoder, or sustained connection cannot reliably maintain 1080p30 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps H.264 bitrate. A consistent lower-resolution picture is more useful than a higher-resolution stream that repeatedly degrades or disconnects.
Consider 1440p or 4K only when the source and delivery can support it
Higher modes can preserve more detail when the source actually captures it, but they also increase the recommended bitrate. For example, YouTube recommends 21 Mbps H.264 for 1440p30 and 42 Mbps H.264 for 4K/2160p30. Test the full setup before selecting one for continuous operation; the title alone does not establish that your camera, encoder, or connection can sustain either mode.

Use 60 fps only when it serves the picture
A higher frame rate may be useful if smoother motion is important and your source and encoder can produce it. YouTube’s recommendations at 1080p rise from 14 Mbps H.264 at 30 fps to 17 Mbps at 60 fps. Compare the result in a representative test rather than assuming 60 fps is always better for a fixed scenic view.
Copyright and channel considerations for a 24/7 stream
Resolution settings do not determine whether a stream is permitted or eligible for monetization. Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you broadcast and follow YouTube’s rules for live content. A continuous stream made from uploaded recordings also needs to offer viewers original value; do not assume that making a video live or looping it automatically satisfies YouTube’s monetization requirements.
