Set your refrigerator to about 37°F to 38°F (3°C to 3.3°C), then check the actual temperature with an appliance thermometer. That target sits within energy and food-storage guidance while leaving a margin below the food-safety limit of 40°F (4°C). The number on the refrigerator dial is not a reliable substitute for measuring inside.

Why 37°F to 38°F is a practical target

FoodSafety.gov advises keeping the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below; bacteria that cause food poisoning multiply quickest between 40°F and 140°F (4°C and 60°C). Its guidance was last reviewed September 18, 2023. FoodSafety.gov’s refrigerator and food-safety guidance also recommends confirming the temperature with an appliance thermometer.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program recommends a refrigerator-compartment range of 36°F to 40°F. It says, “Temperatures below this will unnecessarily increase energy use while providing no additional benefit to food storage.” Temperatures above 40°F raise the chance of food spoilage. The guidance was updated in December 2023. DOE FEMP refrigerator purchasing guidance

ENERGY STAR recommends 35°F to 38°F. Taken together, those recommendations make 37°F to 38°F a useful energy-conscious target: it falls within the cited ranges and stays below the food-safety ceiling. This is a practical synthesis, not a separate official target published verbatim by one source. ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance

How to check and adjust your refrigerator

  1. Measure the temperature. Put an appliance thermometer inside the refrigerator and use its reading rather than relying on the dial or display alone.
  2. Adjust the control if needed. Aim for an actual temperature around 37°F to 38°F. Controls and cooling performance differ by model, so consult the appliance manual if it specifies a temperature range or adjustment procedure.
  3. Check the temperature again. Confirm the interior is at or below 40°F after making an adjustment. If it is above that limit, lower the setting and recheck.

Other ways to reduce refrigerator energy use

Temperature is only one part of efficient operation. ENERGY STAR recommends practical steps that reduce heat exposure and let the appliance work as intended:

  • Place the refrigerator away from heat sources such as an oven, dishwasher, or direct sunlight.
  • Leave a few inches behind it for airflow.
  • Check that the door seals close tightly.
  • Limit how long the door stays open.

What the guidance does—and does not—say about savings

Setting a refrigerator colder than needed can use more energy without improving food storage, according to DOE FEMP. However, the cited official guidance does not give a specific percentage or dollar amount saved for each degree the setpoint is raised. Avoid treating a one-degree adjustment as a predictable bill saving.
