In a name such as Qwen3-30B-A3B, 30B is the total parameter count and A3B is the number of parameters activated, not a second estimate of the model’s total size. These clues help narrow a choice, but the specific model card is still needed to confirm context length, capabilities, and deployment requirements.
How to read a Qwen model name
Read the identifier as a set of clues rather than a universal code. A name may include a generation label, a parameter-size label, a family or task label, and a post-training variant. Not every Qwen family uses every part of this pattern, so a checkpoint’s official model card is the authority for its exact features.
- Generation: A leading label such as Qwen3 identifies the generation in the cited Qwen3 release.
- Parameter scale: A label such as 14B indicates a scale of about 14 billion parameters. It does not identify the task or, by itself, specify the hardware needed.
- Family or task: Labels such as VL, Audio, or Coder indicate a specialized family or intended use.
- Variant: Labels such as Base and Instruct distinguish checkpoint types in some families.
These are useful signposts, not substitutes for checking the exact checkpoint’s capabilities and specifications.
What B and A mean in Qwen3 MoE names
For the Qwen3 mixture-of-experts (MoE) examples, the number before the A is the model’s total parameter count; the A-number is the activated parameter count. Qwen’s April 29, 2025 launch post lists the following figures:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Model name | Total parameters | Activated parameters |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3-30B-A3B | 30 billion | 3 billion |
| Qwen3-235B-A22B | 235 billion | 22 billion |
“Active” does not mean that the model contains only that many parameters: the total count remains the larger figure. Nor should the active count be confused with checkpoint size on disk. These figures describe the two cited MoE models, not a rule that can safely be applied to every Qwen identifier. Qwen3 launch announcement
What the size label tells you—and what it does not
In its 2025 Qwen3 release, Qwen listed dense models at 0.6B, 1.7B, 4B, 8B, 14B, and 32B. A size label is a parameter-scale clue; it does not alone establish a model’s context length, modality support, instruction-following behavior, performance, or hardware fit. The same release documents different context lengths among dense sizes, so check the exact model listing rather than inferring those details from the name. Qwen3 launch announcement

What Qwen family labels mean
Some labels point to the kind of input or work a model is designed for:
| Label or family | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Qwen2.5-VL | Vision-language models; the cited initial release included 3B, 7B, and 72B sizes. |
| Qwen2-Audio | An audio-language family. |
| Qwen3-Coder | A family oriented to coding and agentic coding. |
| Qwen3 Embedding | Models for embedding, retrieval, or reranking. |
The size examples for Qwen2.5-VL refer to its initial cited release, not necessarily every checkpoint subsequently available. Family labels and capabilities can differ by generation and checkpoint; verify the corresponding model card. Base versus Instruct
In the Qwen2.5-Coder repository’s model table, Base and Instruct are separate types. Base is a pretrained foundation model; Instruct is intended for instruction-following use. The distinction is documented for that family and should not be assumed to mean every Qwen family offers the same suffixes or variants. Check the exact checkpoint card before choosing. Thinking mode is not a parameter count
Qwen3’s launch materials describe thinking and non-thinking modes as behavior options that users can control through the documented interface. They are not additional parameter counts encoded by the model’s size. Qwen3 launch announcement

How to compare two Qwen checkpoints
Use the name to shortlist candidates, then compare the model cards on the details that affect your task and deployment:
- Match the family to the task. Decide whether you need a general language model, vision-language or audio capability, coding support, or embeddings for retrieval or reranking.
- Identify the architecture. For a documented MoE name, keep total and activated parameters distinct; do not treat the A-number as the total model size.
- Check the exact size and context length. Neither context length nor hardware needs can be inferred reliably from the size label alone.
- Confirm the checkpoint variant. Check whether the specific listing is Base, Instruct, or another stated variant, and whether that suits your intended use.
- Verify practical requirements. Review the checkpoint’s modality support, license, and deployment compatibility before using or serving it.
Qwen’s official release material verified here covers examples through July 2025; it is not an exhaustive naming guide for every checkpoint or later release. For a current selection, consult the exact repository or model card rather than treating these examples as a complete list of Qwen models. Qwen3 launch announcement
