Choose a pressure-washer nozzle by matching its spray pattern to both the dirt and the surface. For most household jobs, start with a 40° tip for light cleaning, a 25° tip for general cleaning on suitable hard surfaces, or a 15° tip for stubborn dirt on surfaces that can tolerate a stronger stream. A 0° tip and a turbo nozzle are aggressive options, not default choices. Use the low-pressure soap tip to apply detergent, and check your washer’s manual before use.
How pressure-washer nozzle angles work
The degree number describes the spray fan: a smaller angle concentrates water into a narrower stream, while a wider angle spreads it over more area. Concentration increases the impact on a small spot, so the narrowest spray is not automatically the best or fastest choice. Simpson describes the angle-marked tips as fan patterns (Simpson nozzle guide).
Color coding is common, but colors and included tips can vary by equipment kit. Check the manual for your exact washer rather than relying on color alone. Kärcher’s manual, for example, explains its nozzle uses and cautions (Kärcher manual).
Which nozzle should you use for each job?

The angle recommendations are starting points, not universal surface rules. A 40° fan is commonly used for lighter cleaning; Kärcher describes its 25° tip for heavier soiling across larger areas (Kärcher manual; Lowe’s pressure-washer guide). Always defer to the washer manual and the surface maker’s care instructions.

How to choose and use a nozzle safely
- Identify the surface and soil. Consider how delicate the finish is and how stubborn the dirt is. Be particularly cautious with paint, wood, vehicle finishes, siding, joints, seals, and edges.
- Start with a wide fan and low effective force. Test an inconspicuous area, keep the spray moving, and change to a more concentrated tip only if needed and the surface tolerates it. Sealey’s manual advises starting with its green nozzle and increasing intensity as needed; follow the manual for your own machine (Kärcher manual; Kärcher safety guidance).
- Use detergent only with the appropriate low-pressure tip. Choose detergent formulated for pressure washers and follow both its label and the washer’s directions (Kärcher US product guidance).
- Keep people and animals clear. Never direct the stream at a person or animal; observe the safety instructions supplied with the machine.
- Confirm compatibility before fitting a replacement tip. Angle alone does not establish whether a nozzle will fit or work correctly: connection style and orifice requirements are model dependent. Check the washer manual and replacement-parts listing. DEWALT, for example, identifies replacement nozzles by part number (DEWALT replacement nozzles).
There is no universal safe spray distance established for every washer and surface. Use the distance guidance in your machine’s manual, and increase the distance if the test area shows damage or the finish begins to change.

A set with 0°, 15°, 25°, 40°, and soap tips can replace missing or supplemental tips, but do not assume a generic set fits every washer. Verify the connector and orifice requirements for your model before buying. A model-specific replacement may be the better choice when the manufacturer lists a part number (Mi-T-M multi-function nozzle set; DEWALT replacement nozzles).
