Which PlayStation consoles play each generation’s discs?
The answer depends on the console generation and, for PS2 discs on PS3, the exact PS3 model. Sony’s compatibility guidance distinguishes disc formats and warns that not every game in a supported format will work.

Sony’s PS3 playable-discs guidance is the important reference for the PS3 rows. In the U.S. and Canada, it identifies CECHA01, CECHB01, and CECHE01 as models that play most PS2-format discs. It does not promise that every PS2 game works, and it cautions that some original-PlayStation titles may not work on PS3.

For U.S. and Canadian PS3 systems, the documented models that play most PS2 discs are CECHA01, CECHB01, and CECHE01. Most other PS3 models play PS3 discs and many PS1 discs, but generally do not play PS2 discs.

Check the model number printed on the console itself rather than relying on a seller’s shorthand, the amount of storage, or a broad label such as “backward-compatible PS3.” Sony lists model numbers by region, and suffixes differ across sales regions. If the system is from outside the U.S. or Canada, use the corresponding regional information in Sony’s disc-compatibility table rather than assuming the North American model list applies.
Even on a listed model, “most” is not “all”: a particular PS2 disc may be incompatible. Likewise, PS3 support for many PS1 titles is title-dependent. If a specific game is the reason for buying or keeping a console, confirm the exact model and the individual game’s compatibility before treating the console as a sure way to play it.
Can PS4 play PS1, PS2, or PS3 discs?
No. PS4 and PS4 Pro play PS4 game discs, but they do not natively play original PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs. Sony stated in its North American PS4 FAQ that PS4 does not have backward compatibility for those older PlayStation formats.

This is a disc-format limitation, not a problem that can be fixed by inserting an older game and waiting for an update. A PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc is not a PS4 game license in a form the PS4 can use. If you want to play an older title on PS4, the relevant question is whether Sony offers that particular game as a separate compatible digital release or through a service—not whether the console can read the original disc.
Can PS5 play PS4 discs and older PlayStation discs?
A PS5 with a disc drive plays most compatible PS4 game discs, but it does not read PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs. A PS4 disc needs to remain inserted while you play its compatible PS5 version. Sony describes the PS5 backward-compatibility rules as covering the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, while noting exceptions and possible losses of functionality for some titles.
That current support description is not the same as a promise that every PS4 game works perfectly. In October 2020, Sony executive Hideaki Nishino said more than 99 percent of 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible at PS5 launch; that was an at-launch figure, not a freshly calculated 2026 percentage. For a specific title, check its current listing and Sony’s compatibility information rather than treating the historical percentage as a guarantee.

A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use a PS4 game disc. Sony’s support page says, “PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.” Compatible digital PS4 games can be accessed from the appropriate game library without a disc. Adding a compatible PS5 disc drive does not make the console read PS1, PS2, or PS3 discs; Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 disc-drive manual lists those older game-disc formats among the unsupported types.
Are PlayStation Plus classics the same as disc backward compatibility?
No. A downloadable classic or a streamed game offered through PlayStation Plus is an alternative way to access a selected title; it does not mean a PS4 or PS5 can read your original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc.
In the U.S., the PlayStation Plus Premium tier includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. Sony says selected catalog games can be downloaded or streamed on PS4 and PS5 with the appropriate membership. Its current catalog explanation describes classic PS3 games as streaming-only. Availability is specific to the game and catalog at the time you check, so verify the exact title in Sony’s PlayStation Plus support information before relying on it. Sony’s U.S. guidance specifies at least 5 Mbps for streaming; an adequate connection does not guarantee that every game is in the catalog or available in every region.

Think of the three access paths separately:
- Original disc: You need hardware that supports that disc format and, where relevant, a compatible model and game.
- Digital game: You need the relevant compatible digital release or entitlement in your account; the original disc is not what grants access.
- Stream: You need the eligible subscription, the title to be available in the catalog, and a connection that meets the service’s requirements.
How should you choose a console for games you already own?
Start with the version of the game in your possession, then match it to the hardware. A subscription listing or digital re-release is not a substitute for proof that a console reads the original disc.
- Identify the game format. Is it an original PS1, PS2, PS3, or PS4 disc, or do you own a digital entitlement? Do not assume a disc from one generation becomes playable simply because the console has a disc drive.
- For a PS2 disc, verify the PS3’s printed model number. In the U.S. and Canada, look for CECHA01, CECHB01, or CECHE01 if you are considering a PS3. Sony’s guidance says these play most PS2 discs, not every title.
- Check the specific game. Compatibility is not universal for PS1 discs on PS3, PS2 discs on eligible PS3 models, or PS4 titles on PS5. Use the game’s exact name and current official compatibility information.
- For a PS4 disc on PS5, confirm there is a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot use the disc. On a compatible disc-drive model, keep the disc inserted during play.
- If considering a classic through Premium, verify the catalog entry and access method. Confirm whether the game is downloadable or streaming-only, whether the relevant membership applies in your region, and whether you can use streaming reliably.
The practical result is straightforward: an eligible early PS3 is the broadest single-console option for original PS1, PS2, and PS3 discs, but it still does not play PS4 discs and is not universal for every older game. A PS5 with a drive is the modern option for most PS4 discs, not a replacement for a PS1-, PS2-, or PS3-disc-capable console.

Did the PS5 really support more than 99% of PS4 games?
Sony gave that figure for compatibility at the PS5’s 2020 launch, covering more than 4,000 PS4 games. It should not be presented as a new 2026 calculation; Sony’s current support guidance instead says the overwhelming majority are compatible and recognizes exceptions.
Can I stream a PS3 game on a PS5 even though its PS3 disc will not work?
Yes, when that particular game is offered for streaming through the applicable PlayStation Plus Premium catalog in your region. Catalog access is separate from disc support, and Sony’s current catalog explanation describes classic PS3 titles as streaming-only.
Will installing the CFI-ZDD1 drive let a PS5 play PS2 or PS3 discs?
No. The compatible drive provides a disc drive for supported formats, but Sony’s manual excludes PS1, PS2, and PS3 game discs. It does not turn the PS5 into a reader for those older formats.
