PFAS are a large family of synthetic chemicals, not a single substance. Many persist in soil, water, air, or the body because their carbon–fluorine bonds resist breakdown. But PFAS differ: their uses, movement, persistence, health evidence, and clearance from the body are not the same.
What PFAS means
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) describes them as thousands of synthetic chemicals whose structures include a partially or fully fluorinated carbon chain. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls PFAS a very large class that includes PFOA, PFOS, and GenX chemicals. The shared label is useful, but it does not mean every member behaves alike.
Frequently studied examples include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). ATSDR says PFOA and PFOS have been phased out of production in the United States; other countries may still manufacture or use them. A production phaseout does not remove releases or contamination already present in the environment. ATSDR’s overview of PFAS discusses these compounds and their uses.
Why many PFAS persist
The central reason is the strength of the carbon–fluorine bonds in these chemicals. ATSDR explains: “The carbon-fluorine bonds are strong, so these compounds do not fully break down in the environment or human body.” The EPA likewise says PFAS components break down very slowly over time. As a result, releases from production, product use, and waste can remain relevant long after the original activity.

- Space-saving design: Our BPA-free pour-through filtered water pitchers and water dispensers fit easily into small refrigerators or stand elegantly on your countertop, saving you space without sacrificing style.
Persistence is not identical across the PFAS family. ATSDR reports that human half-lives range from a few days to eight years or more, depending on the specific compound. That range describes substantial variation; it is not a single half-life that applies to every PFAS. Environmental behavior and how quickly a substance leaves the body also depend on the chemical.
Why PFAS have been used—and how they reach the environment
Resistance to water, oil, grease, stains, or friction has made some PFAS useful in consumer products and industrial applications. ATSDR says PFAS have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s. Examples identified by government sources include water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, some cosmetics, food packaging, firefighting foams, and non-stick, stain-repellent, or waterproof products. These are examples of uses, not evidence that every item in one of those categories contains PFAS; materials and formulations vary by product, manufacturer, and date.

PFAS can enter soil, water, and air during production and use, and through waste streams. Their ability to persist and move through the environment means a release may continue to matter after the product or industrial activity that caused it is no longer in use. The EPA’s explanation of PFAS in the environment describes environmental entry and persistence.
How people may encounter PFAS
Possible exposure routes include drinking water, some foods such as fish, contaminated soil or dust, air, certain products or packaging, and occupations involving PFAS. ATSDR also identifies breathing exposure during manufacturing or firefighting-foam use. Which route matters depends on the location and circumstances; a possible pathway alone does not establish an individual’s dose or health outcome.

- Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
- Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
- Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
- Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
- Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.
The EPA says CDC survey data indicate that most people in the United States have been exposed to some PFAS. It also notes that most known exposures are relatively low, while some may be higher, particularly with long-term exposure to a concentrated source. Exposure is not the same as illness, and this population-level statement does not determine any one person’s risk. The EPA’s overview of current understanding of PFAS risks covers exposure pathways and health evidence.
What “forever chemicals” does—and does not—mean
“Forever chemicals” is a shorthand for the persistence associated with many PFAS. It is not a precise description of every member of the family, nor does it mean that a chemical literally never leaves a person’s body. Some PFAS clear much faster than others, and environmental persistence varies by compound. The UK government also cautions that PFAS have very different structures and can behave differently in the environment and in the body.

What is known about health effects
Health evidence concerns particular PFAS and exposure situations. The EPA says current research suggests exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes, while research continues into how effects vary by chemical and exposure level. The UK government describes the evidence as inconsistent and notes that only a small number of PFAS have been well studied. It is therefore misleading to treat every PFAS as equally hazardous or to infer an individual outcome from the family name alone.
ATSDR says PFAS can be measured in blood, but blood levels cannot currently be used to determine what harmful effects might be possible. A blood test result by itself is not a prediction of illness. For a local concern, consult guidance from the relevant public-health or water authority; whether a particular exposure pathway is important depends on local conditions.
