When PC hardware prices are high, put the largest share of your budget toward a graphics card suited to the games, resolution, and frame rate you actually want. Match it to your monitor, choose a CPU that can keep pace without crowding out the GPU budget, and treat RAM and storage as needs to balance—not places to overspend by default.

Start with the graphics card—and the screen you want it to drive

For most gaming builds, the graphics card is the main performance purchase. Compare tested frame rates at your intended resolution rather than relying only on product tiers or model names. A card that performs well at 1080p may not deliver the same experience at 1440p or 4K.

Your monitor sets the useful target. Consider its resolution and refresh rate alongside the GPU: paying for performance your display cannot show may be a poor use of a tight budget. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU benchmarks hierarchy, last updated June 24, 2026, presents results by resolution and discusses matching graphics cards to displays.

When comparing cards, check the factors that affect your own use:

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included
  • Frame rates at the resolution you plan to play.
  • Whether performance can meet your monitor’s refresh-rate target in the games you play.
  • Local street price and availability at the time you buy.
  • Ray-tracing performance if you intend to use ray tracing.
  • Whether upscaling or frame generation is available and whether you accept their image-quality and other tradeoffs.

The hierarchy’s direct benchmark tables exclude upscaling and frame-generation results to keep comparisons consistent; those features are discussed separately. Native benchmark figures therefore do not describe every way a card may perform in a supported game.

Choose a CPU that fits the GPU and your workload

Do not assume the most expensive processor is the best gaming purchase. The right CPU depends on the games you play and what else the computer will do. If you also run heavily threaded workloads, that can justify a different balance than a PC used mainly for gaming.

Tom’s Hardware’s CPU benchmarks hierarchy, last updated August 26, 2026, includes gaming scores based on 1080p testing. Use those rankings as a comparison under that test condition, not as a universal prediction for every game or resolution. A powerful GPU can also encounter CPU limits, so consider CPU and graphics-card performance together rather than buying either in isolation.

Balance RAM and storage against actual needs

RAM and SSD capacity matter, but the available evidence does not establish a universal capacity that every gamer should buy. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 gaming PC build guide reports that RAM, graphics-card, and storage prices have risen and offers example choices for particular budget tiers. Those examples are not capacity rules for every game or buyer.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Check the requirements of the games and applications you expect to use, then compare the cost of meeting those needs with the cost of a faster GPU or CPU. The build guide identifies the CPU, GPU, and SSD as key tested components, while noting that it did not test every part in each build.

Use price tiers and survey figures as context, not a shopping list

Tom’s Hardware raised its US-oriented 2026 gaming-build brackets to $900, $1,200, $1,700, $2,100, and $4,000 or more, citing higher prices for RAM, graphics cards, and storage. These are that guide’s budget tiers, not a universal estimate for a build in another country or at another time. Prices and inventory change, so check local options before deciding how to divide your budget.

Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, as reported by Tom’s Hardware on August 4, 2026, found that 25.9% of surveyed users had 16GB graphics cards and 25.32% had 8GB graphics cards. The same report lists 27.85% with 8-core CPUs and 27.52% with 6-core CPUs. The reported figures combine Steam instances on Windows, Linux, and Mac. They describe surveyed users’ hardware, not the minimum requirements for a game or a recommendation for your PC.

A practical way to set priorities before buying

  1. Set the target: Write down your games, monitor resolution and refresh rate, and the frame-rate experience you want.
  2. Compare GPUs for that target: Use results at the intended resolution, then account for current local prices and any ray-tracing or upscaling features you value.
  3. Balance the CPU: Compare gaming results with price, and include any heavily threaded work the PC must handle.
  4. Allocate the remaining budget: Choose RAM and SSD capacity based on your games, applications, and budget rather than treating a build-guide example as a universal requirement.
  5. Recheck the whole build at current prices: A change in GPU, RAM, or storage pricing can alter which combination offers the best balance.
