For one machine that can develop and run games, render projects, and run local AI models, choose a desktop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and at least 64GB of system RAM. Its 32GB of GDDR7 gives it the most model headroom among the graphics-card choices here, while Windows graphics support suits common Unity and Unreal workflows. The trade-off is that 32GB of GPU memory still limits which models and workloads fit without compromises; a high-memory Mac Studio or DGX Spark is a better direction when model capacity matters more than PC gaming or a conventional game-development workstation.

What is the best hardware for running local AI models while developing games?
The RTX 5090 desktop is the strongest all-round recommendation when one computer needs to handle a game engine, a running game, graphics work, and local AI. Its 32GB of dedicated graphics memory is the largest capacity among the discrete GPUs in this comparison, and the card is built on NVIDIA’s Blackwell platform. NVIDIA lists the card’s technical specifications on its GeForce RTX 5090 product page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis is a practical fit, not a claim that it has the largest possible memory pool or that it is fastest for every AI workload. A Mac Studio M5 Ultra configuration with 256GB or 512GB unified memory can provide substantially more memory to a single process, while DGX Spark is positioned as a separate local-AI desktop platform. Those alternatives answer different priorities: fitting larger models, or dedicating a machine to AI rather than choosing a primary gaming workstation.

Think of the purchase as choosing a balance among four demands: game-engine compatibility, AI memory capacity, responsiveness while multiple workloads are active, and the need to build or play games on the same machine. The 5090 is the balanced desktop choice; it is not a universal winner for every model size, workflow, or budget.
How much VRAM and system RAM do you need?
For a local model that runs on a graphics card, VRAM is the immediate capacity constraint: the model and its active workload must fit in the memory available to the runtime, or the user has to make compromises such as quantization or offloading. System RAM is still important for the engine, editor, operating system, and other applications, particularly when AI and game development run together.
The published engine baseline is not an AI workstation target. Epic Games recommends 32GB of system RAM and at least 8GB of graphics RAM for Unreal Engine. That is a starting point for the engine, not a promise that any particular local model will fit or that an editor and model will remain comfortable running side by side. The 64GB-or-more system-RAM recommendation for a 5090 workstation is a planning recommendation for this combined workload, not an official engine minimum.

It can be a sensible current-generation graphics choice when local model size is secondary, but it leaves less room for model memory and concurrent graphics work than 24GB or 32GB cards.
- 24GB graphics memory: The RTX 4090 sits between the 5080 and 5090 on memory capacity. It offers more room than a 16GB card, but is an older generation and its present price and stock are not established here.
- 32GB graphics memory: The RTX 5090 offers the most VRAM in this discrete-card comparison. It still has a finite ceiling; a 32GB card cannot match a 256GB or 512GB unified-memory Mac Studio in raw memory capacity.
- 128GB to 512GB unified memory: DGX Spark offers up to 128GB coherent unified memory, while specified M5 Ultra Mac Studio configurations offer 256GB or 512GB. Larger memory pools can accommodate workloads that exceed a smaller GPU’s capacity, but capacity alone does not establish inference speed.
There is no reliable one-number conversion from GPU memory to a maximum model size. The space a model needs depends on its representation and the runtime workload, including context length and concurrent use. A parameter-count claim by itself is not a full sizing guide: NVIDIA’s statement that DGX Spark supports inference for models up to 200B parameters is a vendor platform claim, not an assurance that every 200B model configuration will perform acceptably for every user.
How do the RTX 5090, Mac Studio, and DGX Spark differ?
The main difference is how each system treats memory and what role it is intended to play. A discrete GPU desktop is the most natural single-machine fit for PC gaming and Windows engine workflows; the Mac Studio offers much larger listed unified-memory configurations; DGX Spark is aimed at local AI as a dedicated desktop platform.

| Option | Published memory or AI figure | Strongest fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 desktop | 32GB GDDR7 | PC game development and gaming alongside local AI | Less memory capacity than high-memory unified-memory systems; system power requirement is 1,000W |
| Mac Studio M5 Ultra | 256GB or 512GB unified memory; 1.2TB/s listed bandwidth | Memory-capacity-first local AI on a desktop | Less suitable for CUDA-specific tools, Windows-only console workflows, or maximum PC gaming flexibility |
| DGX Spark | Up to 128GB coherent unified memory; up to 1 PFLOP FP4 AI performance | A separate local-AI host | Not the natural primary gaming-workstation choice |
Apple’s current Mac Studio technical specifications list the M5 Ultra memory options and bandwidth. The published 1.2TB/s bandwidth is a specification, not a direct comparison of application performance with a graphics card. NVIDIA’s DGX Spark figures are vendor specifications; peak FP4 performance and supported parameter count do not provide a directly comparable tokens-per-second result.
Choose the RTX 5090 when the game workstation comes first
A 5090 desktop makes sense if the machine needs to run a Windows game engine, build and play PC games, and host local AI without separating those jobs onto another computer. It provides the largest VRAM pool of the discrete cards listed here and remains a conventional, upgradeable desktop path. Its main limitation for AI is straightforward: 32GB is still substantially below the unified-memory capacities offered by the alternatives.
Choose the Mac Studio when memory capacity comes first
The Mac Studio M5 Ultra is worth comparing when the central goal is loading larger local workloads into one system, rather than maximizing PC gaming flexibility. Apple lists 256GB and 512GB unified-memory configurations and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. This makes the machine relevant to capacity-first users, but memory size alone does not answer whether a specific runtime, model, or game-development pipeline will be a good fit.
Unity supports macOS with Metal-capable graphics. There are important workflow qualifications: Unity documents GPU lightmapping only on Apple-silicon devices, not CPU lightmapping, and console builds require Windows versions of Unity. A developer whose pipeline relies on either constraint should check project requirements before treating the Mac as a drop-in replacement for a Windows workstation.
Choose DGX Spark when AI should have its own machine
DGX Spark is a different kind of recommendation from a graphics card installed in a gaming PC. NVIDIA describes it as a local-AI desktop platform, with up to 128GB of coherent unified memory and inference support for models up to 200B parameters. NVIDIA also lists up to 1 PFLOP of FP4 AI performance. These are vendor platform claims, not independent benchmarks or a promise of a particular response speed.

It is most relevant when the game-development workstation should remain focused on the engine and game, while a separate computer hosts AI workloads. If gaming and engine graphics are the central purpose of the purchase, a 5090 desktop is the more natural primary machine.
Is the RTX 5080 or RTX 4090 enough?
Either can be the right choice when the 5090’s larger VRAM capacity is not essential to the intended AI workload. The RTX 5080 is a current Blackwell-generation card with 16GB of GDDR7; the RTX 4090 is an older card with 24GB of GDDR6X and DirectX 12 Ultimate support. Neither specification alone establishes which card will produce better results in a particular local model or game-engine project.
RTX 5080: current generation, 16GB
The 5080 is the lower-capacity current NVIDIA option in this group. It can suit a developer who values a current-generation NVIDIA graphics card for game development but expects local AI to be a secondary or limited workload. The 16GB memory figure should be part of the decision before purchase: if the target model and its active workload exceed available graphics memory, the user may need to reduce the workload or use another memory strategy.
NVIDIA announced a $999 launch MSRP for the RTX 5080, with launch availability on January 30, 2025. That is a historical launch figure, not a current November 2026 retail price. Current street pricing and stock are not established here.
RTX 4090: 24GB, but older
The RTX 4090 has 8GB more graphics memory than the 5080, which may matter when choosing among these cards for local model headroom. Its 24GB GDDR6X specification and DirectX 12 Ultimate support make it a relevant alternative, but it is an older generation. No current price or stock evidence establishes whether it is a better value than a newer card in a particular market.

Can you run a local AI model and develop a game on the same PC?
Yes. A single desktop can host both workloads, and the RTX 5090 is the strongest fit in this comparison for doing so while keeping PC gaming and Windows engine support in scope. The practical question is not simply whether both applications launch; it is whether the machine has enough accelerator memory, system RAM, power capacity, and thermal headroom for the particular combination of model, editor, renderer, and game.
A local model can compete with an editor or game for system resources. A scene being rendered or played is also a graphics workload, while inference may use the same GPU. The product specifications and documented requirements do not establish a universal slowdown figure, an exact token rate, or a model-and-engine combination that will always remain responsive. Treat simultaneous use as a workload-planning question rather than assuming the model can run at full speed while the game editor is under load.
For an Unreal workstation, Epic’s published recommended baseline is Windows 11, a quad-core Intel or AMD processor at 2.5GHz or faster, 32GB RAM, at least 8GB graphics RAM, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with current drivers. Those are engine recommendations, not a complete specification for local AI. Building beyond the baseline is sensible for a machine expected to run an editor, a model, and other development tools together.

What should you check before buying a game-development AI workstation?
Start with the project and toolchain, then match the hardware to the largest AI workload you genuinely expect to run. This avoids buying a high-memory system that cannot support a required workflow—or a powerful gaming GPU whose memory is too limited for the model workload.

- Confirm engine and operating-system requirements. Unreal’s published recommendation specifies Windows 11 and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with current drivers. Unity supports Windows GPUs capable of DX10, DX11, DX12, or Vulkan, and macOS GPUs capable of Metal. Check project plugins, render pipelines, and target platforms in addition to the engine’s general requirements.
- Check whether your pipeline has platform-specific steps. If using Unity on Apple silicon, account for its documented GPU-lightmapping-only support; CPU lightmapping is not supported there. If your Unity project needs console builds, account for Unity’s requirement that console builds use Windows versions.
- Estimate the model workload before choosing memory. Identify the model, its quantization or other representation, context needs, and whether other applications must run at the same time. Do not choose based on parameter count alone or assume a published maximum means every configuration will fit comfortably.
- Reserve system memory for development. Unreal recommends 32GB RAM as an engine baseline. A 64GB-or-more system-RAM configuration is the recommendation here for a combined editor-and-local-AI desktop, rather than a minimum guaranteed by Epic.
- Verify power and the complete desktop configuration. NVIDIA specifies 1,000W required system power for the RTX 5090. Treat that as a system requirement to check against the PSU and full build, not as a claim that the GPU itself continuously draws 1,000W. Also confirm case clearance, cooling, motherboard compatibility, and the chosen card’s specific power connectors and dimensions with its manufacturer; those model-specific details are not established by the figures here.
- Compare total system cost and availability at purchase time. The launch MSRPs quoted for 2025 do not establish current street prices. Include the complete workstation configuration—not only the GPU—when comparing a desktop against a Mac Studio or DGX Spark.
How should you choose based on your priority?
Use the machine’s primary job to break a close decision. These recommendations reflect published hardware capacities and documented engine requirements, not a directly comparable performance benchmark.
- One PC for development, gaming, and AI: Choose an RTX 5090 desktop with at least 64GB of system RAM if the budget and 1,000W system-power requirement fit your build. This balances game graphics and the largest VRAM pool among the listed discrete cards.
- Large local models before PC gaming: Compare an M5 Ultra Mac Studio with 256GB or 512GB unified memory. Verify compatibility with the exact model runtime and development toolchain before purchase.
- Keep AI separate from the game workstation: Consider DGX Spark as a dedicated local-AI desktop. Its role is distinct from a primary gaming workstation.
- Reduce GPU memory capacity to favor another consideration: The RTX 5080 offers 16GB GDDR7, while the RTX 4090 offers 24GB GDDR6X. Compare actual current prices and availability rather than relying on launch MSRPs.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described Blackwell as “the engine of AI” arriving for PC gamers, developers, and creatives. That is NVIDIA’s positioning, not an independent comparison. The more decision-useful facts are the actual memory capacity, the engine requirements for the projects at hand, and the power and platform constraints of the full workstation.
How were these recommendations selected?
The options are organized around the reader’s combined workload rather than a single AI specification. The RTX 5090 ranks first because it combines the largest listed discrete-GPU memory capacity with a natural fit for Windows game development and PC gaming. The Mac Studio and DGX Spark follow as purpose-specific alternatives for larger memory capacity and dedicated local AI, respectively; the 5080 and 4090 offer lower-memory discrete-card paths.
The comparison uses published memory, power, AI-platform, and game-engine requirements. Current street prices, retailer stock, exact tokens per second, and directly comparable performance results are not established, so the recommendations do not rank products by those measures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 1 PFLOP mean DGX Spark will answer faster than an RTX 5090?
No direct speed comparison follows from a peak FP4 figure. Response time depends on the model, runtime, precision, context, and workload, and the published figures here do not provide a comparable tokens-per-second result for DGX Spark and the RTX 5090.
Is the RTX 5090 launch price still the price to budget for?
No. The $1,999 figure was NVIDIA’s January 2025 launch MSRP, not a current November 2026 street price. Check the price of the complete system and current local availability when buying.
Will a 200B-parameter model run well on every DGX Spark configuration?
NVIDIA cites inference support for models up to 200B parameters, but that statement does not guarantee a particular model representation, context length, or response speed. Confirm that the exact runtime and workload fit the configuration you plan to use.
