PayFi is a broad crypto-industry label for payment-focused financial applications built with blockchain or digital assets—not one standardized payment system. In a cross-border transfer, a stablecoin can move between wallets quickly, but that is only one part of a remittance: buying the asset, converting it to local currency, and getting it to the recipient can still involve fees, delays, checks, and service providers.

What does PayFi mean?

“PayFi” combines “payments” and “finance.” In crypto-market usage, it describes applications that use blockchain or digital assets for payment-related functions, such as transferring value or settling transactions. The term is an umbrella, not a defined category with one required product design. A PayFi service might use a stablecoin, another cryptoasset, or a combination of blockchain and conventional payment infrastructure.

For remittances, the most relevant example is often a stablecoin: a privately issued digital asset designed to maintain a value relative to a reference asset, commonly the US dollar. It is not the same thing as a bank deposit or central-bank money. Its design, backing and redemption depend on the issuer and the applicable arrangements. The WTO’s overview of stablecoins and world trade describes both their potential payment uses and the infrastructure they still require.

How a crypto remittance differs from a conventional transfer

A conventional remittance typically goes through a transfer provider and connected banking, payment or payout infrastructure. The sender chooses a country pair and a delivery method; the provider’s fees, exchange rate, delivery time and recipient access depend on that route and its local partners.

A crypto transfer can send a digital asset from one wallet to another over a blockchain. A stablecoin is designed to reduce the price volatility associated with non-pegged cryptoassets, but a wallet-to-wallet transfer does not automatically put spendable local currency in the recipient’s hands. If the recipient needs cash or local-currency funds, the asset may need to be sold or redeemed through an exchange or local provider.

Question Conventional remittance Crypto or stablecoin transfer
What moves? Funds are routed through a transfer provider and connected payment or payout infrastructure. A digital asset moves between wallets over a blockchain; a service may handle some steps for the sender or recipient.
What does confirmation mean? Provider status and payout method determine when funds are available. A blockchain confirmation records a network transfer; it does not by itself mean the recipient has local currency or cash.
What may be needed to spend the funds? The recipient uses the chosen payout method, subject to local availability and provider requirements. The recipient may need a compatible wallet and network, and an exchange, redemption route or local provider to convert the asset.
What affects the full delivery? Provider processing, currency exchange, local payment rails and payout access. Acquisition, network activity, platform review, liquidity, exchange, local payout and compliance checks.

Network settlement can be rapid and available outside conventional banking hours, depending on the network and service. But actual completion can take longer if a platform reviews a transfer, liquidity is limited, a compliance check is required, or local payout is unavailable. The WTO notes that stablecoins do not remove the need for foreign-exchange services, customer verification, sanctions screening, anti-money-laundering controls or reliable intermediaries.

Are stablecoin remittances cheaper?

Sometimes they may be advantageous for a particular corridor, but a blockchain network fee is not the total cost. Compare the amount the recipient will actually receive after every charge and exchange-rate difference. Costs can arise when funding a purchase, acquiring the stablecoin, converting between currencies, sending over a network, using a service, converting locally, withdrawing or completing compliance checks.

The World Bank Group’s Financial Infrastructure overview says its Remittance Prices Worldwide resource tracks 367 country corridors, including 48 sending and 105 receiving countries, and notes that opacity around fees and speed makes comparisons harder. Check the World Bank overview for the resource’s scope. Those corridor figures describe the World Bank resource, not the number of crypto routes available.

For any transfer, request current quotes for the exact sending country, receiving country, amount and payout method. Compare the total amount paid with the recipient’s expected amount in local currency, including the exchange rate and all fees. The sources cited here do not provide matched, current quotes for a specific crypto route against a specific remittance provider, so they cannot establish which option is cheaper for an individual transfer.

How long does a crypto remittance take?

There is no single delivery time for “a crypto remittance.” The blockchain leg may settle quickly, but the end-to-end time depends on the particular network and provider, any account or transaction review, the recipient’s access to the asset, and the local conversion and payout route. A displayed network confirmation is not the same as cash available for collection or spendable local-currency funds.

Traditional cross-border payments also vary by corridor and provider. In BIS Paper 167, published 11 March 2026, the authors describe cross-border payments—particularly remittances and retail transactions—as more costly, slower, less accessible and less transparent than domestic payments, citing obstacles including limited interoperability and differences between country systems and institutions. That comparison is with domestic payments; it does not show that every crypto route is faster than every remittance provider.

What evidence says about how crypto is used for cross-border payments

A 2025 BIS working paper studied Bitcoin, Ether, Tether and USD Coin flows between 184 countries over 2017–2024. It found that native-crypto flows were more affected by volatility and global financial conditions, while stablecoin flows and low-value Bitcoin transfers showed links to transactional motives and traditional remittance costs. The authors write that “Stablecoins exhibit stronger links to remittance costs and transactional imperatives, especially in emerging market and developing economies where traditional financial channels are costly.” These are findings about observed flows and associations, not proof that a particular sender will save money.

The paper estimated crypto flows peaked at around US$2.6 trillion in 2021, with stablecoins accounting for close to half the volume. That is the paper’s estimate of crypto flows, not a measure of remittance value. Read BIS Working Paper 1265 for its methods and findings.

What to check before sending

  • Total cost and recipient amount: Include funding charges, exchange spread, network fee, provider fee, local conversion, withdrawal and payout costs. Compare the final local-currency amount, not just the advertised fee.
  • Recipient access: Confirm the recipient can use the exact asset on the exact network, and has a practical route to spend, redeem or convert it locally.
  • Delivery and recovery: Check what the service counts as completion, how long reviews or payouts may take, and what recourse exists for a delayed transfer or an address or network mistake.
  • Redemption and custody: Review the issuer’s redemption terms and who controls the keys or holds the assets. A self-custody wallet is not required for every crypto transfer, and custody choices do not remove the risks of sending to the wrong address.
  • Provider and local requirements: Confirm identity checks, sanctions screening, AML controls, service availability and applicable rules for both countries.

Risks and regulatory context

Stablecoins carry risks tied to the issuer, reserve quality and transparency, redemption rights, governance, operational resilience, cybersecurity, custody and consumer protection. Legal treatment can also differ across jurisdictions. A foreign-currency stablecoin may provide another payment option, while wider use can raise currency-substitution and monetary-policy concerns, particularly in developing economies. The WTO’s discussion covers these trade-offs.

The CPMI’s 31 October 2023 report considered stablecoins as one possible cross-border payment arrangement among several and warned that potential benefits should not come at the expense of appropriate regulation. At that time, it said no stablecoin arrangement met its standard of being properly designed and regulated and fully compliant with relevant requirements. That statement reflects the report’s publication date, not a current inventory of arrangements. Read the CPMI report.

Peer-to-peer transfers through unhosted wallets can bypass regulated intermediaries and create specific illicit-finance vulnerabilities, including around cross-chain activity. FATF’s 3 March 2026 report says only a limited number of jurisdictions had implemented targeted stablecoin frameworks and calls for effective controls under its standards. These are risk and policy concerns; they do not mean that every stablecoin user or transaction is illicit. Read FATF’s report on stablecoins and unhosted wallets.
