Short answer: the 2019 report did not show a robot cooking a meal or loading a dishwasher. It described a robotic arm learning to navigate an Ikea kitchen, fetch objects from counters and place them in drawers. Cooking and dishwasher loading were presented as possible future tasks, not demonstrated capabilities.
What the 2019 report actually demonstrated
Kristin Houser’s January 16, 2019, Futurism report covered NVIDIA’s AI Robotics Research Lab in Seattle, which had opened in November. Dieter Fox was identified as the lab’s head.
The lab’s primary project was teaching a robotic arm to operate in an Ikea kitchen. The concrete tasks described were:
- Finding and fetching items from kitchen counters.
- Placing those items into drawers.
Those actions are examples of mobile manipulation: combining visual perception, movement planning and a robot hand’s ability to grasp and release objects in a domestic setting.

What it was not yet doing
The article mentioned loading a dishwasher and cooking a meal as potential next steps. It did not report that the arm had completed either task. Therefore, describing the project as a robot that already cooks or cleans overstates the evidence.
| Task | Status in the January 2019 account |
|---|---|
| Fetch an item from a counter | Described as an immediate project task |
| Put an item in a drawer | Described as an immediate project task |
| Load a dishwasher | Possible future task; no completed demonstration reported |
| Cook a meal | Possible future task; no completed demonstration reported |
Why use an Ikea kitchen?
An Ikea kitchen gives researchers a recognizable but controlled domestic environment: counters, cabinets and drawers provide repeatable places to navigate and manipulate. It is structured enough for experiments while still containing the everyday variation that makes household robotics difficult.

The project was not presented as an Ikea product, appliance or consumer robot, and the available account does not establish that Ikea sponsored it. The kitchen was the setting for research on general-purpose manipulation.
The technical problems the project represents
Perception
A household robot must identify objects, distinguish them from surrounding surfaces and estimate where they can be safely grasped. A 2019 peer-reviewed survey in Sensors reviews related kitchen-robotics work on household-object identification and grasp-point detection, and cites NVIDIA’s Ikea-kitchen project in connection with navigation and utensil recognition: Sensors survey, published October 14, 2019. That survey provides field context, not independent verification of NVIDIA’s specific demonstration.
Control and grasping
Picking up a utensil or container requires choosing a motion that avoids obstacles, reaches the object and applies the right force. Drawers add another sequence: approach the handle, grasp it, pull it open, place the object and avoid collisions while retracting.

Learning and simulation
Fox framed the work as combining perception, control, learning and simulation. In the quotations reproduced by Futurism from an NVIDIA news release, he said the goal was to “develop robots that can naturally perform tasks alongside people” and to enable “smart manipulators that can also operate in open-ended environments where not everything is designed specifically for them.” These quotations are attributed here as Futurism reported them.
Why cooking is substantially harder
Fetching and drawer placement involve discrete objects and relatively clear destinations. Cooking adds changing states, deformable or fragile ingredients, heat, liquids, sharp tools and timing. The robot would need to recognize whether an ingredient is raw, prepared or spilled; measure and transfer it; use appliances safely; and recover when a step goes wrong. None of those capabilities was established by the 2019 report.

How far the project’s status can be traced
The documented evidence here is a 2019 news report. The reviewed sources do not establish what happened to this particular project afterward, whether the kitchen installation continued, or whether the arm later cooked or loaded a dishwasher. Present-day claims about its status require newer, project-specific evidence.

What “learning to cook and clean” means in context
In the headline, “cook and clean” describes an intended research direction rather than a finished consumer capability. The demonstrated emphasis was on teaching a manipulator to perceive and act in an open-ended environment. If that foundation worked, more complex household tasks could become research targets—but the report stopped at counter fetching and drawer placement.

The Bottom Line
The Ikea-kitchen robot was a research arm learning basic household manipulation in a 2019 NVIDIA project. It was reported fetching counter items and placing them in drawers; cooking a meal and loading a dishwasher remained future possibilities, not demonstrated functions.
