Nokia’s acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent expanded its network-equipment portfolio, bringing fixed-network, IP/optical, and applications capabilities into the combined company. But integration also involved roadmap decisions and product discontinuations. Buyers should not assume every Alcatel-Lucent product remained available or unchanged: check the documentation and written support terms for the exact model, software release, region, and service contract.

What happened in the acquisition

Nokia announced the all-share acquisition on April 15, 2015, at a fully diluted value of €15.6 billion. The companies began combined operations on January 14, 2016; Nokia said it finalized the acquisition on November 2, 2016. Those are distinct milestones: combined operations began before the transaction was legally completed. Nokia’s January 2016 announcement and its November 2016 completion announcement describe the timeline.

What Nokia intended to add

When combined operations began, Nokia described five business groups: Mobile Networks, Fixed Networks, IP/Optical Networks, Applications & Analytics, and Nokia Technologies. Its stated rationale was to pair its mobile-network position with Alcatel-Lucent’s fixed-network and IP/optical capabilities, align product and technology roadmaps, and serve a broader global customer base. These were Nokia’s strategic aims at the time, not proof that every intended benefit was realized. Nokia’s announcement quoted then-president and CEO Rajeev Suri saying the combination would let the companies align roadmaps and better serve communications providers, governments, internet companies, and large enterprises.

Nokia’s 2016 announcement put the combined organization at approximately 104,000 employees, around 40,000 R&D professionals, and 31,000 patent families. It also estimated the combined company’s addressable market at approximately €130 billion, compared with approximately €84 billion for Nokia alone, based on 2014 figures, and estimated a 3.5% CAGR for 2014–2019. These are company-reported, transaction-era figures—not current headcount, market size, or a forecast for buyers today.

Did Nokia keep Alcatel-Lucent products?

Some Alcatel-Lucent capabilities became part of Nokia’s broader portfolio, but buyers should not infer that every product was retained. Alcatel-Lucent’s 2016 half-year report said integration was underway, product-roadmap decisions had been made, and some products were being discontinued. The cited report does not identify every affected model, so it cannot establish the status of a specific system. Alcatel-Lucent’s financial reports document the integration-period reporting.

Nokia later said the companies had operated together since January 2016 and described work to improve the portfolio. That company statement does not establish that every customer migration was seamless or that a particular legacy product remains supported. China also had a distinct integration structure: Nokia and China Huaxin formed Nokia Shanghai Bell by bringing together Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and Nokia’s China business. Nokia said those businesses had effectively operated as one entity from January 2016 under an interim arrangement. Nokia’s announcement on Nokia Shanghai Bell provides that geographic context.

How Nokia’s current portfolio relates to the deal

Nokia’s 2025 Annual Report on Form 20-F says its two-segment operating model—Network Infrastructure and Mobile Infrastructure—took effect on January 1, 2026. Network Infrastructure includes optical, IP, fixed, and data-center networking products for telecommunications providers, AI and cloud customers, mission-critical enterprises, wholesalers, and public-sector organizations. That establishes Nokia’s present broad infrastructure role; it does not establish that each current product descends directly from an Alcatel-Lucent line. Nokia’s results and reports include the annual report.

One current example is Nokia’s 7750 Service Router family, which Nokia markets for provider, AI/cloud, and mission-critical enterprise IP-routing applications. It is a professional platform, not a universal replacement for a specific inherited Alcatel-Lucent router. Assess any candidate against the system’s actual requirements and Nokia’s written commitments. Nokia’s 7750 Service Router information describes the family.

How to check support for an Alcatel-Lucent system

Support status cannot be determined from the brand name alone. Before planning a refresh, renewal, or migration, gather the exact product details and request confirmation for your region and contract.

  1. Identify the hardware. Record the exact model, configuration, and hardware revision from the product label and asset records.
  2. Record the software. Note the installed software release and relevant maintenance level; ask whether security fixes and updates are available for that release.
  3. Request lifecycle dates in writing. Ask Nokia or the organization responsible for the contract for the product’s end-of-sale and end-of-support dates. Do not treat a general portfolio page as confirmation for a specific configuration.
  4. Confirm repair and spares. Check availability and terms for spare parts, repair, replacement, and service response in the deployment region.
  5. Validate interoperability and migration. Compare required interfaces, capacity, protocols, software dependencies, and connections to neighboring equipment. Ask for a migration plan that addresses operational constraints and any required testing.
  6. Check the service contract. Confirm whether existing support transfers, must be renewed, or requires a new agreement, and verify which products, releases, and locations it covers.

If you are evaluating a replacement, compare the candidate against the installed system on network role and capacity, interfaces and protocols, software lifecycle and security support, interoperability and migration cost, regional availability, and written support and spares commitments. A platform’s general capabilities are not enough to establish compatibility.

What buyers should conclude

The acquisition is useful historical context for understanding why Nokia offers a wider range of network infrastructure capabilities, but it is not a guarantee that a particular Alcatel-Lucent product is still sold, compatible with a proposed replacement, or covered by support. Make those decisions using the exact model, release, region, and contract—and obtain lifecycle and service commitments in writing.
