NASA’s Perseverance rover found mineral patterns in a Martian rock that could be consistent with ancient microbial activity. The finding is a potential biosignature, not proof that life existed on Mars: non-biological processes could also have produced the minerals.

Did NASA find life on Mars?

No. NASA announced on September 10, 2025, that its Perseverance rover had found a potential biosignature in a rock sample from Jezero Crater. NASA defines a potential biosignature as a substance or structure that might have a biological origin but needs more data or study before scientists can determine whether life is present or was present. The discovery was peer reviewed and the data are available to the wider science community, but the origin of the features is not settled. NASA’s announcement

The distinction matters: scientists have observed a pattern of minerals and are assessing possible explanations for it. They have not directly detected organisms or established that life made the pattern. As NASA project scientist Katie Stack Morgan put it, “Astrobiological claims, particularly those related to the potential discovery of past extraterrestrial life, require extraordinary evidence.”

What did Perseverance discover?

The Sapphire Canyon sample

The finding concerns a rock named Cheyava Falls, in the Bright Angel formation along Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley that flowed into Jezero Crater. Perseverance encountered the rock in July 2024 and drilled a core sample, named Sapphire Canyon, on July 21, 2024. The rover’s instruments PIXL and SHERLOC collected data from the rock. The Bright Angel rocks are sedimentary, made of clay and silt, and contain organic carbon, sulfur, oxidized iron, and phosphorus, according to NASA. The ancient river setting gives the rock a water-related geological context; it does not, by itself, show that organisms lived there.

What the “leopard spots” are

Higher-resolution images showed small reaction-front patterns nicknamed “leopard spots.” The spots carry signatures of two minerals: vivianite, a hydrated iron phosphate, and greigite, an iron sulfide. NASA says reactions involving organic matter can produce these minerals, making the pattern a possible fingerprint of microbial metabolism. The observations are the mineral signatures and their arrangement; the proposed biological origin is an interpretation, not a direct rover measurement of life. NASA’s explanation of the finding

Could the minerals have formed without life?

Yes. NASA says vivianite and greigite can form through non-biological processes as well. Possible routes include sustained high temperatures, acidic conditions, or reactions catalyzed by organic compounds. NASA reports that the rock shows no evidence of high temperatures or acidic conditions, which makes those particular explanations less supported by the observed context—not impossible in every respect. It remains unknown whether organic compounds could have driven the reaction at low temperatures.

Possible explanation How it fits the evidence What remains unresolved
Microbial activity Microbes could produce chemical conditions that form the observed iron-mineral pattern. The pattern is compatible with this possibility but does not establish that microbes were present.
Non-biological reactions Similar minerals can form without life, including through heat, acidity, or reactions involving organic compounds. NASA reports no evidence of high temperatures or acidic conditions in this rock; whether organics could catalyze the reaction at low temperatures remains unknown.

Study lead author Joel Hurowitz summarized the uncertainty to The Associated Press: “All we can say is one of the possible explanations is microbial life, but there could be other ways to make this set of features that we see.” Associated Press, September 10, 2025

What can the rover—and future analysis—tell us?

Perseverance can examine rocks with instruments on Mars and cache samples for possible return and detailed laboratory study. Earth-based laboratories could apply more powerful analytical methods to the material, potentially helping scientists distinguish biological from non-biological pathways. The Sapphire Canyon result is not a direct detection of living organisms, and further study is needed to assess the competing explanations. NASA’s Perseverance mission overview

NASA’s September 10, 2025 announcement said Sapphire Canyon was one of 27 rock cores the rover had collected since landing in Jezero in February 2021; that is a count as of the announcement, not a current mission total. NASA described Cheyava Falls as about 3.2 feet by 2 feet (1 by 0.6 meters), and Neretva Vallis as about 400 meters wide. Those measurements describe the rock and its setting, not evidence for life.
