For the most future-proof GTA VI setup, choose a 4K monitor with HDMI 2.1, a 120Hz-or-faster refresh rate, VRR, HDR, and a low-latency game mode. That specification matches the high-end display capabilities documented for PS5 and Xbox Series X. It is not an official GTA VI requirement: Rockstar’s published GTA VI information confirms PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as target platforms, but does not yet state the game’s console resolution, frame-rate modes, VRR range, or HDR mastering.
A 4K/60Hz monitor is still a sensible value choice if you mainly want sharp output and do not need 120Hz in other games. Do not buy a 120Hz display on the assumption that GTA VI will run at 120 frames per second; that mode has not been confirmed.
What Rockstar has—and has not—confirmed
Rockstar’s official GTA VI pages list PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with an announced launch date of November 19, 2026 from Take-Two Interactive Software. Those pages do not publish a monitor specification or a final console graphics menu. In particular, there is no confirmed GTA VI requirement for native 4K, 60 frames per second, 120 frames per second, HDR format, or a specific variable-refresh-rate window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat means a monitor recommendation has to start with the consoles rather than with an unannounced GTA VI performance mode. Sony documents that PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K/120Hz video output. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X with true 4K gaming, an “up to 120 FPS” performance target, HDR, HDMI 2.1, Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode. Those are platform capabilities; they do not promise that every game, including GTA VI, will use them.

Recommended monitor specifications at a glance
| Tier | Resolution | Refresh rate | HDMI requirement | Other features | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best future-proof choice | 3840×2160 (4K) | 120Hz or higher | HDMI 2.1 input verified for 4K/120Hz | VRR, HDR, low-latency game mode | Players who want the consoles’ high-end output and flexibility for other games |
| Sensible value choice | 4K | 60Hz | HDMI input verified for 4K/60Hz | HDR preferred; VRR useful | Players prioritising image detail and not buying for 120Hz gaming |
| Budget compromise | 1440p or 1080p | 120Hz or higher if responsiveness matters | Check the monitor’s console resolution/refresh table | VRR preferable | Smaller budgets or desks where 4K is not a priority |
A 27–32-inch screen is a practical desk range for 4K console play, but size is an ergonomic preference, not a PS5 or Xbox requirement. Sit close enough to benefit from 4K without choosing a panel so large that you must constantly move your head.
Resolution: why 4K is the premium target
PS5 can output 2160p, and Xbox Series X is specified for true 4K gaming. A 3840×2160 monitor therefore gives either console the pixel capacity expected from a premium setup. It also provides headroom for games that offer a high-resolution mode, menus, text and streamed video.
Do not confuse output resolution with internal rendering resolution. A console game can render below 3840×2160 and upscale to a 4K signal. Until Rockstar publishes GTA VI’s graphics modes, nobody can accurately promise native 4K rendering, a fixed resolution, or a particular reconstruction method.
1440p and 1080p screens can work, especially when price or desk space matters. They give up some fine-detail headroom, and a monitor advertised with a very high PC refresh rate may not accept that same refresh rate from a console. Always read the manufacturer’s HDMI compatibility table for the exact input and signal combination.
Refresh rate and the 120 FPS question
A 120Hz panel can display up to 120 refreshes per second and leaves room for a game to use a 120Hz output mode. Sony explicitly documents PS5 4K/120Hz output, while Microsoft describes Xbox Series X as having an up-to-120-FPS performance target. These facts make 120Hz useful future-proofing.

They are not evidence that GTA VI will run at 120 FPS. A large open-world game may prioritise visual quality, simulation detail, resolution or a stable 30/60 FPS mode. Rockstar has not announced the final frame-rate options in the official material currently available. Treat 120Hz as a capability for compatible games, not a GTA VI promise.
If you only play titles that target 30 or 60 FPS, a 60Hz 4K monitor can be entirely adequate. Choose 120Hz when the price difference is acceptable, you play competitive or fast-action games, or you want to avoid replacing the display when more 120Hz console modes become available.
What HDMI 2.1 changes
HDMI 2.1 is the key specification when your target is 4K at 120Hz over a console connection. PS5 supports HDMI 2.1, and Xbox Series X has an HDMI 2.1 port according to Microsoft’s specifications. A monitor must also provide an HDMI 2.1 input that actually supports the desired 4K/120Hz signal; a product can use the HDMI 2.1 label for features that do not include the bandwidth you need.
Check the detailed input table for statements such as “3840×2160 at 120Hz” on the HDMI port, not only on DisplayPort. DisplayPort performance is irrelevant if the console is connected by HDMI. Some displays offer 4K/120Hz only on one HDMI input, so connect the console to that specific port.
The cable, console and monitor form one signal chain. A cable cannot create 4K/120Hz, HDR or VRR when either endpoint lacks support. Sony recommends the cable supplied with PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable when troubleshooting 4K/120Hz. Buy a certified Ultra High-Speed cable when replacing a cable, but regard it as an enabling component rather than an image-quality upgrade by itself.

VRR: smoother output when frame rate varies
Variable Refresh Rate synchronises the display’s refresh timing with the console’s changing frame rate. When supported and configured correctly, it can reduce visible tearing and make uneven frame delivery feel smoother. PS5 exposes VRR settings, and Xbox Series X supports HDMI Variable Refresh Rate and AMD FreeSync. Xbox’s monitor guidance also treats VRR as a core feature alongside HDR and 4K/120Hz.

There is no GTA VI-specific VRR range published by Rockstar. Look for a monitor whose VRR works through HDMI with the console, then verify the supported range in its manual. A monitor that advertises FreeSync only over DisplayPort may not provide VRR to a console.
HDR: useful for a visual game, but labels are not enough
Both consoles support HDR, making it a worthwhile feature for a visually focused setup. HDR quality depends on brightness, contrast, tone mapping and how the panel controls dark areas. A specification sheet that merely says “HDR” does not guarantee a bright, controlled HDR image.
Compare the monitor’s measured or documented peak brightness, contrast behaviour and local-dimming or OLED characteristics when those figures are available. Use the display’s console or game HDR mode if it has one, and complete the console’s HDR calibration rather than leaving a factory preset unchanged. Rockstar has not published a GTA VI HDR certification or mastering specification, so no particular HDR format can be called mandatory.
Input latency and game mode
Choose a monitor with a usable game mode and low input lag. Game mode normally disables processing that adds delay, but it can also alter colour, brightness or HDR tone mapping. Check independent latency measurements when available, and confirm that the low-latency mode does not disable the HDMI 2.1, VRR or HDR feature you intend to use.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
There is no GTA VI-specific latency threshold. The practical goal is a display that responds promptly to controller input while retaining the image features you paid for.
Panel type, size and desk setup
Panel choices
- OLED: Typically offers very deep blacks and fast pixel response. Consider room brightness, automatic brightness limits and long-term static-image precautions.
- IPS or similar LCD: Often provides wide viewing angles and consistent colour. HDR strength varies greatly with backlight design and local dimming.
- VA LCD: Can provide strong native contrast, but motion response and viewing-angle behaviour differ by model.
These are general panel trade-offs, not GTA VI requirements. Evaluate the complete HDMI, VRR, HDR and latency implementation rather than selecting by panel label alone.
Size and viewing distance
At a desk, 27–32 inches balances 4K sharpness and readability for many players. A larger screen can work from a sofa or farther viewing distance, while a smaller screen may be easier to place near a keyboard and controller. Check stand height, tilt, swivel, VESA compatibility and available desk depth before buying.
How to connect and configure PS5
- Connect the PS5 to the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 input using the included cable or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR and HDR entries.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p when the monitor supports 4K. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic so compatible games can request it.
- Enable VRR if both the monitor and the console report compatibility. If the screen flickers or loses signal, test VRR off, then check the monitor firmware and HDMI input mode.
- Run Adjust HDR in the same Video Output area and follow the on-screen calibration. Use the monitor’s game mode after calibration.
The exact options shown depend on the monitor’s reported capabilities. A 4K/120Hz claim on the box is not enough if the selected HDMI input reports only 4K/60Hz.
How to connect and configure Xbox Series X
- Connect Xbox Series X to the monitor’s documented HDMI 2.1 port with the supplied or certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options and inspect the current resolution and refresh rate.
- Choose 4K UHD when the monitor accepts it. Open Video modes and enable Allow 4K, Allow HDR10 and Allow variable refresh rate when those options are available and appropriate.
- Use 4K TV details on the same screen to see which capabilities Xbox detects. If 120Hz is missing, check the monitor input, cable, firmware and any HDMI enhanced/deep-colour setting.
- Run the console’s HDR calibration tool, then select the monitor’s low-latency game mode.
Xbox may show a capability as unsupported when the monitor is connected through an adapter, receiver or HDMI switch. Test a direct console-to-monitor connection before replacing hardware.

Buying checklist for a GTA VI monitor
- 3840×2160 resolution if you want the premium image-detail target.
- 120Hz or higher if you want 4K/120Hz capability for compatible games; 60Hz is acceptable for a value-focused setup.
- An HDMI 2.1 input explicitly rated for 4K/120Hz, not merely a generic HDMI 2.1 label.
- Console-compatible VRR over HDMI.
- HDR with credible brightness, contrast and tone-mapping information.
- Low measured input lag in the mode you will actually use.
- A size, stand and viewing distance that suit your room.
- Firmware support and a clear compatibility table for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Common mistakes and fixes
Buying a 240Hz PC monitor without checking console modes
High PC refresh rates often depend on DisplayPort or a lower resolution. Confirm the HDMI row for 4K/120Hz, 1440p/120Hz or 1080p/120Hz before purchase.
Assuming every HDMI 2.1 port is equivalent
Ports differ by bandwidth and supported features. Read the manual, use the designated high-bandwidth port and enable any enhanced HDMI setting required by the monitor.
Expecting a cable to upgrade a limited monitor
An Ultra High-Speed cable can carry the required signal, but it cannot make a 60Hz-only input accept 120Hz. Replace the cable only after checking both endpoints.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Turning on HDR without calibrating it
Incorrect console calibration can produce clipped highlights or crushed shadows. Run the PS5 or Xbox HDR tool, then verify the monitor’s HDR and game presets.
Using an intermediary that limits the signal
AV receivers, capture devices and HDMI switches can be limited to 4K/60Hz or disable VRR. Test direct connection first and verify every device in the chain before troubleshooting the monitor.
A documented example of the specification pattern
Dell’s official AW2725QF page describes a 27-inch 4K dual-resolution gaming monitor with HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K/120Hz console support, HDR, VRR and console-oriented features. It demonstrates that the desired combination exists in a monitor; it is not proof of GTA VI performance and should not be treated as a universal best choice. Compare any alternative on actual HDMI bandwidth, VRR compatibility, HDR performance, latency, ergonomics and price.
What may change before launch
GTA VI is announced for November 19, 2026, but its final console display modes can still be documented later. Before buying specifically for this game, check Rockstar’s current game and support pages for confirmed resolution, frame-rate, VRR and HDR details. Until Rockstar publishes them, avoid claims that the game requires HDMI 2.1, runs at 120 FPS or renders natively at 4K.
Bottom line
Buy a 4K, 120Hz-or-faster HDMI 2.1 monitor with VRR, HDR and low input lag if you want the strongest long-term PS5 or Xbox Series X display setup. Choose 4K/60Hz when value and sharpness matter more than high-refresh gaming. A 1440p or 1080p monitor remains usable, but verify its exact console signal support and accept the loss of 4K detail. None of these tiers is an official GTA VI requirement because Rockstar has not yet published the game’s final monitor-facing specifications.
