Micron’s GDDR7 memory is specified to reach data rates of up to 32 Gb/s per pin, but that figure is not a graphics card’s total memory bandwidth. The chip rate, memory-bus width and number of memory connections together determine bandwidth. Micron describes GDDR7 as using PAM3 signaling on its 1β DRAM process; its public product materials support those specifications but do not establish when sampling began, who received samples, or when volume production will start.

What does Micron’s 32Gb/s GDDR7 sampling mean?

It signals a memory component designed for higher per-pin data rates than earlier GDDR generations, potentially enabling more bandwidth in GPUs that use it. Micron says its GDDR7 is built on its 1β (1-beta) DRAM node and that the initial release specification provides 16Gb capacity at rates up to 32 Gb/s. The company also says it is developing higher-capacity and higher-performance products. Micron’s GDDR7 explainer describes the technology and its product context.

Sampling is a development-stage milestone, not proof that a finished graphics card is available or that the memory has completed qualification. Micron’s cited public materials do not specify the sampling start date, recipients, sample quantities, qualification results or a volume-production schedule. The 32 Gb/s figure is a supported product capability; the details of the sampling event remain unestablished by those materials.

How does PAM3 help GDDR7 reach higher data rates?

Micron says GDDR7 uses PAM3 signaling, which represents data with three voltage levels, rather than the NRZ signaling used in GDDR6. In Micron’s explanation, encoding more information per signal cycle can raise data rates without requiring bus frequency to rise as aggressively, easing signal-loss pressures. That is the company’s technical explanation, not an independent test finding.

Micron explainer author Todd Buerkle, identified as a senior product manager for Micron’s graphics product line, describes the approach this way: “GDDR7 is the first DRAM device to feature PAM3 signaling (with three signals), a technique that allows for higher data transmission rates, improving memory bandwidth and overall system performance.”

Why 32 Gb/s is not the same as GPU memory bandwidth

Gb/s describes the data rate per pin. Aggregate bandwidth also depends on the width of the memory interface: a wider bus moves more data in parallel. Micron’s product brief gives an example of greater than 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth at 32 Gb/s, assuming 12 memory placements and a 384-bit bus. It is a configuration-based calculation, not a bandwidth figure that applies to every GDDR7 GPU. Micron’s GDDR7 product brief states the assumptions behind that example.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Micron’s explainer also describes up to 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth and a 60% increase over GDDR6 in its comparison context. Those figures should be read as Micron’s claims, not as universal outcomes for every GPU configuration. A memory rate alone cannot establish how a particular card will perform.

What performance and efficiency gains does Micron claim?

Micron reports several comparisons for GDDR7, each tied to a particular baseline or qualification. They are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks:

  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system
  • Power efficiency: Micron’s product brief claims a greater than 50% improvement over GDDR6, comparing measured Micron 16Gb GDDR6 and measured Micron 16Gb GDDR7.
  • Standby power: The brief claims up to 70% lower standby power.
  • Generative-AI inference: The brief projects up to 20% reduced response times for text-to-image inference. The projection uses measured GDDR6 20Gb/s data, so it is not a measured general result across workloads.
  • Gaming workloads: Micron’s explainer claims greater than 30% higher FPS in ray-tracing and rasterization workloads versus a GDDR6/GDDR6X trend across 1080p, 1440p and 4K.

These comparisons do not isolate the outcome a buyer should expect from any particular graphics card. GPU architecture, software, power limits and workload also affect system performance; the cited materials do not quantify those effects.

Which shipping graphics cards use GDDR7?

NVIDIA’s January 2025 RTX 50 announcement identifies several consumer graphics cards with GDDR7 and publishes different capacities and bandwidths. These are NVIDIA’s specifications, not independent performance tests:

GeForce RTX 5080 16GB Up to 960 GB/s
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB 896 GB/s
GeForce RTX 5070 12GB 672 GB/s

NVIDIA’s RTX 50 announcement lists these configurations and describes memory speeds of up to 30Gbps for the RTX 50 Blackwell family in that January 2025 product context. That does not contradict Micron’s 32 Gb/s component capability: a GPU’s memory configuration need not use the maximum rate cited for Micron’s portfolio.

The cards are finished consumer products incorporating GDDR7, not Micron memory samples. NVIDIA names ASUS, Colorful, GIGABYTE, MSI, PNY and ZOTAC among its board partners. What should buyers take away?

Micron’s 32 Gb/s specification describes the potential speed of its memory components, while a GPU’s published bandwidth depends on its complete memory configuration. The RTX 50 examples show how one GPU family pairs GDDR7 with different capacities and bandwidths; they do not demonstrate that the memory rate alone determines gaming or AI performance. Micron’s performance and efficiency figures are company comparisons with specific baselines, not independent results for every card or workload.
