Managed Node.js hosting takes some infrastructure work off your team, but it does not run your application without your input. Depending on the provider and service configuration, the platform may build and deploy your code, run and scale application processes, route traffic, collect logs, or maintain parts of the underlying runtime and operating system. You still own the application’s code, configuration, dependencies, runtime choices, and data-recovery decisions.

What “managed” means in Node.js hosting

Managed hosting is a division of responsibility, not a guarantee that every operational task is handled for you. The provider operates parts of the hosting platform; your team configures and maintains the application running on it. The exact boundary varies by provider, product, and setup.

For example, Heroku’s Node.js hosting documentation describes its Runtime as provisioning and orchestrating dynos, managing their lifecycle, configuring networking and HTTP routing, and aggregating logs. It also describes scaling, recovery behavior for failed dynos or faulty hardware, and patching the underlying operating system and libraries. These are documented examples of platform responsibilities, not a universal definition of managed hosting.

AWS App Runner says it handles starting, running, scaling, and load balancing a service. For source-code services, it can track code changes, build the application, and deploy a new version; its Node.js platform supplies managed runtime images. What it does for a particular app still depends on how that service is configured.

What the platform may take care of

Across these examples, the provider may operate the machinery around an application process. Check the documentation for the exact service type you plan to use rather than assuming every item below is included.

  • Process lifecycle: Starting and running app instances, and managing their lifecycle.
  • Traffic handling: Routing HTTP requests or load balancing traffic to a service.
  • Builds and deployments: Building from source and deploying changes when configured to do so.
  • Scaling and recovery: Adjusting running instances and handling certain process or infrastructure failures.
  • Logs: Collecting or aggregating application logs.
  • Underlying platform maintenance: Patching parts of the operating system or providing managed runtime images.

A Node.js system can also include work beyond an always-on web server. Render’s service documentation distinguishes public web services, private services, background workers, scheduled jobs, and workflows; it documents data services separately from application services. That distinction matters if your app relies on a worker or scheduled task as well as a web process.

What you still need to configure and maintain

Build and start behavior

The platform needs to know how to turn your project into a running service. For a managed Node.js runtime, AWS App Runner requires build and run commands. Its settings can be provided through the console, API, or a configuration file, and can include a Node.js version and package commands. Managed builds can execute installation steps, but your project must still specify the behavior the service needs.

Runtime version

You remain responsible for choosing a supported Node.js runtime and responding when that choice becomes outdated. AWS App Runner allows runtime updates during deployments or service updates, as well as pinning a version. AWS states that a runtime past its end of support may continue running but no longer receive updates, security patches, or technical support; source-code customers must change the service configuration to use a supported runtime.

AWS lists Node.js 12, 14, 16, and 18 as reaching App Runner end of support on December 1, 2025. That is an App Runner-specific milestone, not a universal Node.js lifecycle date. Before changing a service, check the provider’s current runtime support information and the Node.js release schedule.

Dependencies and reproducible builds

Your team decides which dependencies the application uses and whether they remain compatible. Heroku advises specifying the Node.js version used for development and testing and documents package-manager configuration and lockfiles. A hosting platform can run the build, but it cannot make dependency upgrades or changes automatically safe. Keep package configuration and lockfiles aligned with the version you intend to deploy.

Secrets and application configuration

Managed hosting does not remove the need to configure the application itself. Identify the environment variables, secrets, package commands, and other settings your app requires, then follow the provider’s supported configuration method. The specific controls and responsibilities depend on the service.

Keep data and backups in a separate decision

Application compute and persistent data are not necessarily the same service. Render, for example, lists Postgres and Key Value separately from its application-service types. Its documentation says paid Postgres instances are continually backed up for point-in-time recovery. That statement applies to the documented paid Postgres offering; it does not establish backup coverage for every app filesystem, database plan, or provider.

Before relying on a data service, verify its backup scope, retention, restore process, and plan eligibility. Also determine whether the application writes important data to storage that persists across deployments or instance replacement. A platform’s ability to recover a process or machine is not, by itself, proof that your application data can be restored.

How to compare managed Node.js services

Use these questions to check where the provider’s work ends and yours begins:

  1. Runtime lifecycle: Which Node.js versions can you select? How are updates applied, and what happens when a version reaches end of support?
  2. Build and deployment: Does the service build from source, deploy an image you supply, or require you to provide build and start commands?
  3. Process and traffic operations: For your chosen service type, what scaling, routing, load balancing, logging, health, and recovery behavior is documented?
  4. Data boundary: Is the database or durable storage separate from compute? What backup and recovery terms apply to the exact plan?
  5. Application responsibilities: Which runtime, dependency, secrets, and start-command decisions remain yours?

These questions reveal operational fit more usefully than the word “managed” alone. The examples here establish differences in documented responsibilities; they do not support a universal ranking by price, uptime, security, or performance.
