Viewers may subscribe to a 24/7 YouTube music stream because it reliably fits a listening routine—such as relaxing or focusing—and, for some, because the live stream and its chat feel like a shared place. The evidence supports these as plausible reasons, not as a proven formula: research specifically measuring subscription decisions for always-on YouTube music streams is limited.
Useful music can earn repeat listening
A stream that works well as background music can become part of a listener’s routine: beats to study to, music for work, or something to relax with. In an exploratory 2025 student study, respondents most often chose relaxing or chilling out, focusing on tasks, and enjoying the music as their top criteria for listening to lo-fi hip-hop. The paper reports that 40 percent of its respondents used YouTube most frequently for lo-fi hip-hop; that is a sample-specific finding, not a representative estimate of all YouTube music listeners and not a subscription rate.
This points to a practical distinction: a listener may value the music without subscribing, while a channel that consistently suits a recurring mood or task has a reason to be remembered and revisited. Available evidence does not establish how much 24/7 availability itself increases the likelihood of subscribing.
Knowing a stream is live can add presence
A 2026 Journal of Marketing study by Duani, Barasch, and Ward compared live amateur music performances with equivalent or identical prerecorded performances. It reports that knowing a video is live can increase perceived presence—the feeling of “being there”—and social connection. Those experiences were linked to enjoyment, continued watching, and intentions to follow, subscribe, or join a fan community.

This is evidence for a general live-viewing mechanism, not a direct test of around-the-clock ambient music stations. It also matters to keep outcomes separate: watching longer, returning to listen, and subscribing are different behaviors. The study does not show that a particular 24/7 channel will gain subscribers simply by being live.
Chat can turn background listening into a shared room
YouTube Help describes live viewing as a shared experience that can build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer. It also says live chat lets viewers interact and have real-time conversations with each other and creators. That is YouTube’s explanation of its feature, not independent proof that chat causes subscriptions in every music genre.

Chat may matter most to people who want to feel present with other listeners; someone using a stream only as a soundtrack may never open it. Studies of music broadcasts and fan livestreams offer context, but not a universal explanation for ambient-stream subscriptions:
- An exploratory online-ethnography study examined eight YouTube music broadcasts during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, focusing on social cohesion, intercultural understanding, and community resilience. Its small case set and unusual lockdown context limit what it can establish about current always-on stations.
- An interview study of V Live music fans identified interpersonal relationships, social presence, celebrity support and presence, social interaction, and differentiation as motivations. Those findings concern celebrity and fandom livestreams, which differ from largely ambient 24/7 radio.
Atmosphere and companionship are possible, but personal
An exploratory interview study of regular users of the ChilledCow station examined what made lofi streaming compelling and identified the animation and music as contributors to the experience. This can help explain why a channel’s atmosphere may feel companionable to some listeners, but qualitative interviews cannot establish how common that response is.

For a creator, atmosphere is therefore best treated as part of the channel’s identity—not a guaranteed conversion tactic. A visually coherent stream, fitting music, and a welcoming chat may suit some viewers; others simply want the audio to keep playing.
What creators can take from the evidence
- Make the listening purpose clear: for example, focus, relaxation, or a particular musical mood. These are audience-use descriptions, not universal motives.
- Deliver a dependable musical fit. The exploratory lo-fi survey supports the relevance of relaxation, task focus, and enjoyment in its sample, but does not show that any one factor predicts subscriptions.
- Use live chat as an invitation to participate, not an assumption that every listener wants conversation. YouTube presents chat as a way to enable real-time interaction.
- Distinguish atmosphere from fandom. An ambient station may offer a setting and routine; a performer-centered stream may draw on artist connection and fan identity. Evidence from V Live should not be generalized directly to ambient radio.
- Handle music rights before going live. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a livestream.
YouTube for Artists puts one possible subscription motivation simply: “Some of your most dedicated fans subscribe to your channel to stay close to the music.” That statement is useful creator guidance, not a measurement of subscription behavior for 24/7 stations.

Keeping a YouTube music stream available
Creators can go live using YouTube’s supported methods, including mobile, webcam, encoder, or console setups. The production method can help keep a stream running, but the available evidence does not show that specific gear or a hosting service makes viewers subscribe. For a continuous station, creators should plan separately for a reliable stream, suitable visuals, chat moderation, and permission to use the music.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The defensible explanation is a combination: useful music may encourage repeat use, while liveness and community can give some listeners an additional reason to feel connected to the channel. The supporting studies examine adjacent settings, such as amateur live music, exploratory lo-fi listening, lockdown broadcasts, and celebrity fandom. They do not provide representative data on why viewers subscribe to 24/7 YouTube music streams, nor do they establish a leading factor or predict conversion for an individual channel.
