Chris Gayle’s 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against Pune Warriors on 23 April 2013 is so difficult to surpass because it paired an extraordinary scoring rate with a long innings and an unusually large share of runs from boundaries. He made 175 from 66 balls, reached his hundred in 30, and hit 13 fours and 17 sixes. RCB finished on 263 for 5, with an opening stand of 167 and 85 runs scored in the final six overs.
What happened in the innings?
At Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Gayle carried his bat for 175 not out from 66 deliveries as RCB faced Pune Warriors in the 2013 Indian Premier League. The IPL’s match report records that he reached 100 from 30 balls. RCB made 263 for 5 and won by 130 runs.
Those figures describe more than a brief burst of hitting. Gayle scored at a pace equivalent to about 2.65 runs per ball, or a strike rate of approximately 265.15. He maintained a remarkable rate while facing enough deliveries to build an innings of exceptional size.
How did Gayle reach 175?
He scored nearly nine out of every ten runs in boundaries
Guinness World Records records 13 fours and 17 sixes, worth 154 runs in boundaries. That is 88% of his 175; the remaining 21 runs came from other scoring events. The boundary count and total are listed in the Guinness record entry.

- SS made up of kashmir willow
- Grade 5 willow
- Weights 1280 grams
- best peformance with tennis ball
- lasts 20 overs
Boundary-heavy scoring helps explain how such a high total was possible in 66 balls. It also shows the scale of the task for anyone trying to match the score: the batter must combine sustained scoring with an exceptional volume of fours and sixes.
The acceleration began early and continued late
Reaching a hundred from 30 balls meant Gayle had already scored at extraordinary speed before the innings’ midpoint. He then added another 75 runs from his remaining 36 deliveries. The innings was therefore not simply a fast start followed by a modest finish.

ESPN’s match report says RCB scored 85 runs in the final six overs. That late surge came after Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan had put on 167 for the first wicket; Dilshan contributed 33. The opening partnership gave the innings a strong platform, while the finish pushed the team total higher.
Why is 175 such a difficult benchmark?
- It demands both volume and pace. A batter has to stay at the crease long enough to make a very large score while maintaining a scoring rate like Gayle’s.
- The boundary contribution was exceptional. Gayle’s 154 boundary runs accounted for 88% of his total, leaving little room for a conventional accumulation of singles and twos to explain the score.
- The match context amplified the total. A 167-run opening stand and a finish of 85 runs in six overs helped RCB reach 263 for 5, but Gayle remained the innings’ dominant individual scorer.
- Matching one feature is not enough. A later batter could score quickly or play a long innings, but surpassing 175 requires combining both at an extreme level. The scorecard shows what happened in this match; it does not establish why no other batter has matched it.
What record does the innings hold?
The IPL’s 2013 match-day statistical summary called 175 the highest individual score in all Twenty20 cricket at that time, ahead of Brendon McCullum’s 158 not out for Kolkata Knight Riders against RCB in 2008. The same summary described RCB’s 263 as the highest T20 team total at the time and the 167-run opening partnership as an IPL record. Those are historical claims from 2013, not a current all-T20 ranking.
