It contains the first drive, communicates through screens, rotates behind help, and secures the rebound so one stop does not become a second-chance opportunity. The right screen coverage depends on the matchup; switching, hedging, showing and recovering, and dropping all have trade-offs.
Contain the first advantage
Against a quick team, a clean drive past the first defender can force the defense into a scramble. The on-ball defender needs to stay balanced and avoid giving up a direct route to the rim, while teammates position themselves to help and cover the space that help leaves. WNBA.com describes this coordinated ability to shrink space through timely, consistent rotations as “ground coverage” (WNBA.com’s 2022 defense analysis).
Pressure can begin before a screen. In a 2023 analysis of New York’s defense, WNBA.com described Betnijah Laney picking up ball-handlers early and staying active through screens to disrupt timing and make them work deeper into the possession (“New York Liberty Defense: The Blueprint”). That is a historical example of one team’s approach, not a prescription that every defense should press full court.
Choose screen coverage for the matchup
No coverage is automatically best. The decision turns on the ball-handler’s threats, the screener’s abilities, the defenders available, and how well the other team passes and shoots. Each option trades one kind of risk for another:

| Coverage | Potential benefit | Main demand or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Switch | Can keep the ball-handler from turning the corner and avoid a two-defender commitment to the ball. | Requires clear communication and defenders able to handle temporary mismatches. |
| Hedge or trap | Can interrupt a dangerous ball-handler and force the offense to give up its preferred action. | Sends two defenders toward the ball, so the remaining defenders must rotate quickly and cover outlets. |
| Show and recover | Can contain the ball-screen action briefly while attempting to return defenders to their original matchups. | Depends on timing and recovery speed; a late recovery can leave the screener or a shooter open. |
| Drop | Keeps the big defender closer to the rim. | Can concede space to a ball-handler who shoots pull-ups effectively. |
These are tactical trade-offs, not a universal ranking. WNBA.com’s 2023 Liberty analysis described a man-to-man base with switches and matchup-dependent traps or hedges; it also discussed bigs showing and recovering. Treat that as an example of a flexible package from that season, not a description of the current Liberty (WNBA.com).
Connect help defense to recovery
Help should deter a drive without leaving a shooter unattended longer than necessary. When one defender steps toward the ball, teammates need to recognize the opening, protect the rim, and recover to shooters as the offense moves the ball. Aggressive pressure may force a difficult pass, but accurate passing can expose long rotations, especially to the corners.

WNBA.com’s analysis of defensive play describes Alyssa Thomas using length, speed, communication, and anticipation to disrupt the ball before it reaches the rim; it also discusses A’ja Wilson’s mobility as a rim protector and Breanna Stewart’s ability to help around the nail and close gaps quickly (2022 WNBA defense analysis). The lesson is about how individual tools fit into a connected rotation, not a claim about current roles or schemes.
Physicality is useful when it helps defenders stay in front, flatten screens, narrow passing windows, and contest under control. Strength and active hands alone cannot replace balance or timing: arriving too early risks a foul, while arriving too late can give an opponent a clean finish. WNBA.com’s 2022 analysis emphasizes that defenders must choose when to rotate to make a play without fouling (WNBA.com).

Finish the stop with a rebound
A missed shot is not a completed defensive possession if the offense collects the rebound. The defense must find opponents, box out, and secure the ball; otherwise, pressure and a good contest can still lead to second-chance points. Blocks and deflections also need context: WNBA.com notes that keeping a blocked ball in play can help create transition offense, but a loose ball is not necessarily a secure stop (2022 WNBA defense analysis).
Evaluate the defense with several measures
Use official WNBA team statistics alongside film rather than relying on steals, blocks, or points allowed per game alone. The WNBA team defense statistics interface includes defensive rating, defensive rebounds and rebound percentage, opponent second-chance points, opponent points in the paint, opponent fast-break points, and opponent points off turnovers.

- Defensive rating: A possession-adjusted measure for a broad view of defensive performance.
- Opponent fast-break points: Helps assess whether the opponent is scoring in transition after the defense loses balance or possession.
- Defensive rebounds and opponent second-chance points: Show whether the defense is ending possessions after misses.
- Opponent points off turnovers: Helps measure the cost of mistakes forced by pressure; consider it with film and the defense’s own turnovers.
- Opponent points in the paint: Offers a view of interior scoring, but cannot by itself establish that perimeter or overall defense is strong.

- Ball-handler threat: Can the primary defender stay in front, and will the opponent punish a drop with pull-up shooting?
- Matchups: Can the defense switch without conceding a favorable size or speed mismatch?
- Rim protection and recovery: Can the big contain the ball and still recover to the screener or rim?
- Spacing and passing: Will a trap or aggressive help expose a reliable outlet or corner shooter?
- Communication: Can all five defenders identify the action, call the coverage, and rotate on time?
- Possession finish: Does the coverage lead to a rebound and limit second-chance and fast-break scoring?
Film helps answer what the box score cannot: whether a defense repeatedly forced the offense to work, consumed clock, and disrupted its preferred actions. A missed shot or one highlight block does not, by itself, show that the defense controlled the possession.

A fast, physical opponent can stress a defense in different ways: by beating the first defender, screening to create mismatches, attacking gaps before help arrives, or scoring after a missed shot. A sound defense adjusts its coverage to those threats while keeping its communication and rotation rules intact. In WNBA.com’s 2023 Liberty analysis, then-head coach Sandy Brondello described adapting tactics while maintaining consistent core values. That historical example captures the balance: change the coverage when the matchup calls for it, but make sure all five defenders know how to execute it.
