The binary stars’ separation, orbital eccentricity and relative masses shape the approximate safe zones—but no single boundary guarantees stability for every planet.
Two ways a planet can orbit a binary
Orbiting one star: an S-type orbit
In an S-type, or circumstellar, orbit, the planet circles one star while the other star acts as a gravitational perturbation. The planet generally needs to stay well inside the distance between the stars; farther out, the companion can disrupt its orbit.
Orbiting both stars: a P-type orbit
In a P-type, or circumbinary, orbit, the planet circles the binary system’s center of mass. It generally needs to remain outside the region where the two stars’ changing gravitational pull is strongest. These are distinct configurations with different stability boundaries, not two versions of the same orbit.
What sets the approximate stable zones?
The principal screening estimates come from Holman and Wiegert’s 1999 numerical study. It examined test particles in eccentric binaries over 104 binary periods and developed empirical expressions for the largest stable circumstellar orbit and the smallest stable circumbinary orbit. The estimates scale with the binary’s semimajor axis and depend on its eccentricity and stellar mass ratio; they are not proof that a particular planet will survive indefinitely. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The following examples apply to equal-mass binaries. Distances are expressed as multiples of the binary’s semimajor axis, the scale of the stars’ mutual orbit:
| Planet’s configuration | Circular binary | Binary eccentricity 0.5 | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circumbinary: approximate inner edge | About 2.39 times the binary semimajor axis | About 3.60 times the binary semimajor axis | Higher eccentricity moves the approximate inner edge outward. |
| Circumstellar: approximate outer edge | About 0.27 times the binary semimajor axis | About 0.12 times the binary semimajor axis | Higher eccentricity confines the planet closer to its host star. |
These values reproduce the Holman–Wiegert fits as presented in two later studies; they are approximate critical semimajor axes, not universal cutoffs. Because the examples assume equal stellar masses, they should not be applied as exact limits to binaries with different mass ratios. 2021 MNRAS article presenting the circumbinary fit; 2021 MNRAS article presenting the circumstellar fit

Why a stability boundary is not a guarantee
A critical semimajor axis is a useful first screen, but stable and unstable orbits do not always divide at a sharp line. A planet’s own eccentricity, its orbital orientation and phase, and long-term orbital evolution can change the outcome. Mean-motion resonances—relationships between the orbital periods of the planet and binary—can also destabilize some orbits or shape the stable region. A 2022 study of circumbinary planets migrating through destabilizing resonances notes: “The idea of a stability ‘limit’ may be misleading though, as there is not in reality a sharp boundary dividing stable and unstable planets.” 2022 MNRAS study of circumbinary stability maps
For a specific system, compare the planet’s semimajor axis with the binary’s, then consider binary eccentricity and mass ratio, the planet’s eccentricity, and nearby mean-motion resonances. Orbital orientation and phase may matter too. A system-specific numerical stability analysis is more informative than treating a fitted boundary as a verdict.

Kepler-16b shows that circumbinary planets exist
NASA/JPL reported in 2011 that Kepler-16b is a cold, gaseous planet that orbits both stars every 229 days; the stars orbit each other roughly every 41 days. The planet lies outside its system’s habitable zone. Its discovery demonstrates that a planet can orbit a binary, but its orbital arrangement does not establish the stability boundary or climate of other two-star systems. NASA/JPL: Kepler’s first planet in a two-star system
NASA Science describes only about a dozen of Kepler’s confirmed exoplanet discoveries as circumbinary. That is an approximate count specific to Kepler on the cited page, not a current census of all planet surveys. NASA Science: Planet types
