Aim for level 60–70 before fighting Starscourge Radahn. Level 70 is the safer general target for a first attempt, while a prepared character around level 55–60 can win by using Torrent, upgraded equipment, a suitable build and the festival’s NPC summons. If you intend to fight without those summons, waiting until roughly level 65–75 is more practical.
There is no official mandatory character level. Readiness depends on health, weapon upgrades, damage output, player skill and how much help you use in the arena.
The practical level targets
Radahn is a readiness check rather than a level-gated encounter. Guide recommendations cluster around the 60s, with one guide recommending level 60 or higher, another giving a 55–70 range, and GameSpot advising at least level 70. Taken together, those recommendations make level 60–70 the broadest first-attempt window.

These are practical ranges, not guarantees. A skilled player with an efficient build may win below them, while a character at level 70 can still struggle with an unupgraded weapon, low Vigor or a damage setup that does not suit the fight.

Why your level alone does not decide the fight
Health determines how much room you have for mistakes
Radahn applies pressure at range and can chain punishing melee attacks when you close in. The researched preparation guidance treats sufficient health as a core readiness check alongside character level. If one hit removes most of your health, leveling a few more times may be less useful than investing in survivability and learning when to disengage.
Use your health bar as a practical test: you should be able to survive an isolated mistake, heal safely and re-enter the fight without every exchange becoming a one-hit risk. The exact Vigor value is not established by the available guidance, so there is no responsible single-stat threshold to quote.
Weapon upgrades often matter more than a few character levels
The preparation guides identify weapon upgrade state as a key companion to level. Character attributes raise potential damage, but an under-upgraded weapon can leave that potential unrealized. Before deciding that you are underleveled, check whether your main weapon has been improved as far as your current progression allows and whether you are using the weapon type your build supports.

Build and damage approach change the recommendation
GameSpot’s advice emphasizes either a powerful weapon suited to your chosen build or strong ranged spells. The important point is consistency: your attacks must produce reliable damage while you manage Radahn’s movement and pressure. A build that depends on a narrow setup, has poor attribute scaling for its weapon or leaves you unable to punish openings may need more preparation even at the recommended level.
Conversely, a coherent build with a weapon or spell approach you already understand can make the lower end of the range realistic. Skill with your chosen moveset is part of the level recommendation, not separate from it.
Summons and Torrent materially change the difficulty
The festival arena is designed around an open battlefield, Torrent and summon signs for allied NPCs. Calling those allies gives Radahn additional targets and adds damage, which is why the lower 55–60 range is associated with using them. Removing that support concentrates the encounter on you and raises the practical target toward 65–75.

Torrent also changes positioning. The open arena gives you room to move between attacks, approach summon signs and create distance when Radahn’s pressure becomes unsafe. If you are not comfortable fighting from horseback, practice the controls before the encounter rather than treating the mount as an optional detail.
A quick readiness check before entering the arena
Use this checklist to decide whether to attempt the fight now or continue exploring:
- Level: You are around 60–70, or you have a clear reason to attempt the lower 55–60 end with strong preparation and summons.
- Health: Your Vigor and flask setup let you survive Radahn’s ranged pressure and melee combos long enough to heal and reposition.
- Weapon: Your main weapon is upgraded for your current progression and scales with the attributes you have invested in.
- Damage plan: You know whether your reliable damage comes from close-range attacks, ranged spells or another build-specific approach.
- Mount: You can control Torrent confidently in the open arena.
- Summon plan: You intend to use the festival NPCs, or you have deliberately prepared for the higher difficulty of fighting without them.
- Learning expectation: You are treating the first attempt as a chance to learn attack timing and spacing, not as proof that your character is permanently too weak.
If several items are missing, gaining levels alone may not solve the problem. Improve the weakest part of the checklist first.
How to access the Radahn Festival
The fight becomes available through the Radahn Festival at Redmane Castle in Caelid. Bandai Namco’s official progression instructions describe two ways to activate the festival:
Progress Ranni and Blaidd’s quest
Advance Ranni and Blaidd’s quest far enough for the festival state to be triggered. The exact quest progression can vary with what you have already completed, so returning to Redmane Castle after a meaningful step in that storyline is the practical check.
Reach Altus Plateau and rest at a Site of Grace
The second route is to enter Altus Plateau, rest at a Site of Grace there, and then return to Redmane Castle. This route can activate the festival without advancing the quest in the same way.
If the castle still appears to be in its earlier state, verify that you actually rested after reaching Altus Plateau and then revisit the castle. The activation condition is progression-based, not tied to reaching a particular character level.

Preparing for a summon-supported attempt
Set up your equipment before crossing the fog
Choose the weapon or spell setup that already performs well for your build. Upgrade it, confirm that you can meet its attribute requirements and arrange your flasks so that you have enough healing for repeated approaches. The guides do not establish a single mandatory upgrade number, so the useful standard is whether the weapon is appropriately improved for your current journey.
Use the arena’s summon signs deliberately
When the festival provides NPC summon signs, use them to spread Radahn’s attention and add damage. Their presence supports the lower end of the recommended range, but they do not make the fight automatic. Radahn can defeat allies, and you may need to look for additional signs as the encounter develops. Keep Torrent available so you can move between signs and the boss without crossing the arena on foot.
Keep damage consistent instead of chasing every opening
Summons create opportunities, not permission to attack continuously. Stay close enough to punish safe openings, then disengage when Radahn turns toward you or begins a dangerous sequence. A patient character around level 60 with a sound weapon and good positioning can outperform a higher-level character who trades hits carelessly.
Preparing to fight without the NPC summons
Soloing removes the encounter’s built-in distractions and allied damage. That is why the more conservative target is approximately level 65–75. You will need to create your own openings, survive more of Radahn’s attention and maintain damage without relying on allies to reset his focus.
Before choosing this route, make sure your weapon is well upgraded and your build produces dependable damage. If you are repeatedly dying before learning the fight, summoning the festival NPCs is not a lesser version of the encounter; it is one of the mechanics the arena was built to support.

What to do if you are dying at the recommended level
You die to the first ranged pressure
Check survivability and positioning before adding more levels. If your health is too low to survive a mistake, invest in Vigor or improve your defensive setup. Use Torrent and the arena’s space to avoid approaching in a straight, predictable line.
You survive but deal very little damage
Inspect your weapon upgrade state, attribute scaling and damage type. A build-suitable, upgraded weapon or a strong ranged-spell plan is more important than a small level increase. If your current weapon does not match your attributes, changing to a compatible option may produce a larger improvement than farming runes.

You cannot find a safe rhythm
Use the first attempts to identify when Radahn is targeting you and when he is occupied by an NPC. Approach after an attack rather than during an active combo, land a measured amount of damage and retreat before greed turns a safe opening into a trade.
You are fighting alone unintentionally
Look around the arena for the festival’s NPC summon signs and make sure you are using Torrent. The encounter’s difficulty changes substantially when those supports are omitted, so an apparently underleveled fight may simply be a no-summon attempt.

How the recommendation changes in later New Game cycles
The 55–75 ranges describe a normal progression context and should not be treated as universal for every playthrough. Recommendations can shift with player skill, build, patch changes and whether the fight is attempted in a later New Game cycle. Enemies become more demanding in later cycles, so carrying the same character level into a higher cycle does not reproduce the original difficulty.
For a first journey, use the ranges as a planning aid. In a later cycle, judge readiness by whether your current damage and survivability keep pace with that cycle rather than by copying a level from an earlier run.
Why defeating Radahn matters beyond the reward
The Elden Ring Wiki’s 2026 guide page lists a reward of 70,000 runes for defeating Starscourge Radahn. The encounter also has progression significance: Bandai Namco’s official expansion-access instructions state that entering the Shadow Realm requires defeating both Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood.
That requirement makes Radahn part of the access path for the expansion, but it does not create an official character-level requirement. You still need to defeat Mohg as well, and your readiness for the next area should be assessed separately rather than assuming Radahn’s recommended level automatically prepares you for every subsequent challenge.

A simple decision rule
- At level 55–60: Attempt Radahn only if your weapon is upgraded, your build deals consistent damage, your health is adequate and you plan to use Torrent and the festival NPC summons.
- At level 60–70: This is the most broadly supported window for a first attempt, provided your equipment and survivability are not neglected.
- At level 70: Treat this as the conservative general target cited by GameSpot, not as a guarantee of victory.
- At level 65–75 without NPC summons: The higher range is sensible because you must supply all the damage, attention management and survivability yourself.
- At any level: If your weapon, health or damage plan is the weak point, fix that before assuming more character levels are the answer.
