Lance Crosby’s venture was StackPath, a cloud-oriented security and delivery company launched in July 2016 with $150 million in funding from ABRY Partners. Its stated idea was to make security services API-driven, so development and DevOps teams could incorporate them as they built and operated applications.

What was StackPath?

StackPath was a new company Crosby announced after leaving IBM, which had acquired his earlier company, SoftLayer. The 2016 launch was not presented as a continuation of SoftLayer; it was a separate venture focused on security and delivery services for cloud-oriented environments.

At launch, Crosby was identified as StackPath’s CEO and chairman. The launch account described him as SoftLayer’s founder and a 20-year hosting-industry veteran. He explained the motivation in an interview with Data Center Knowledge/The WHIR: “After being acquired by IBM I spent the last two years seeing the shortcomings of cloud security,”

What did “developer-centric” cloud security mean?

Crosby described the launch thesis as building security into application development and operations through APIs, rather than treating security as a separate layer teams had to adapt after the fact. His exact characterization was: “The genesis is to create a developer-centric security platform that’s going to be API-driven, and going to allow developers and DevOps to actually integrate security into their applications as they are building it,”

That was Crosby’s description of the goal, not independent evidence of a particular security outcome. The underlying problem StackPath said it was addressing was the difficulty of fitting traditional security products into highly automated cloud environments. An API-led model was intended to let teams apply security policies as part of the way they built and operated applications.

Which services did StackPath announce?

The initial service categories reported at launch combined delivery services with security controls for web-facing applications:

Service category What it was intended to address
Content delivery network (CDN) Delivery of website content to users
DDoS protection Protection against distributed denial-of-service attacks
VPN services Virtual private network connectivity
Web application firewall (WAF) Filtering and protection for web application traffic

The company was not described as developing every capability from scratch. The launch article reported that StackPath had acquired MaxCDN for content delivery, Fireblade for web application firewall capabilities, and Cloak for VPN capabilities.

What did StackPath plan to add?

StackPath said it planned to add secure compute, storage and DNS by the end of 2016, followed by additional security services. These were roadmap intentions reported at launch; the available reporting does not establish whether or when each planned service became available.

How was the venture funded, and where was it meant to work?

Reuters reported on July 25, 2016 that StackPath had raised $150 million from ABRY Partners. Data Center Knowledge/The WHIR reported that launch funding would support acquisitions as well as infrastructure and services development. Reuters also reported Crosby’s statement that the services would work across on-premises infrastructure and public clouds, including Amazon, Microsoft and Google cloud services.

What is known about StackPath today?

The July 2016 reporting establishes what StackPath announced at launch, but it does not establish the company’s present operating status or whether any of these services are currently offered. It also does not confirm which roadmap items launched.
