Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds for a YouTube 24/7 stream. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds; its encoder guidance does not give continuous streams a different setting. YouTube’s live encoder guidance applies the same recommendation whether a stream is short or continuous.
Set the interval to 2 seconds
If your encoder asks for the interval in seconds, enter 2. YouTube calls 2 seconds the recommended keyframe frequency and sets 4 seconds as the maximum. Do not treat 4 seconds as the preferred value: it is the stated upper limit, not the recommendation. YouTube’s published encoder guidance does not list a separate keyframe interval for a 24/7 stream.
Convert seconds to frames if your encoder asks
Some encoder fields use frames rather than seconds. Convert the recommended 2-second interval by multiplying 2 by the stream’s frame rate:
- At 30 fps, enter 60 frames.
- At 60 fps, enter 120 frames.
This is simply a conversion of YouTube’s two-second recommendation into the encoder’s unit; it is not a different YouTube recommendation.

Keep the setting consistent and separate from bitrate
Keyframe interval is not bitrate. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose bitrate for those settings rather than changing the keyframe interval to match it. YouTube’s encoder guidance also specifies RTMP or RTMPS, supported codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR bitrate encoding. OBS says a consistent keyframe interval within the platform’s recommendation helps viewers switch smoothly between quality options. Its explanation is available in the OBS transcoding guidance (page dated 2021-06-09).

Test the stream and watch stream health
Before relying on a continuous broadcast, test with a setup that resembles the stream you intend to run. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. For a 24/7 channel, check that the encoder reports a healthy connection after starting and revisit stream health if viewers report playback problems.
Do not apply another platform’s interval range to YouTube
Cloudflare documents a 2-to-8-second interval range for its own live-stream product, noting that shorter intervals can use more broadcast-side bandwidth and reduce latency, while longer ones can reduce bandwidth and may increase latency. That is Cloudflare Stream guidance, not a YouTube setting. For YouTube, use YouTube’s 2-second recommendation and 4-second ceiling: Cloudflare’s troubleshooting page was last updated 2026-07-30.
