Sivan links hope about El Niño’s future to better climate and atmospheric modelling—not to a verified forecast that the current event will weaken soon. The latest cited government assessment, released on 5 August 2026, instead expected El Niño conditions to persist through February 2027.
What was K. Sivan reported to have said?
An Economic Times search result associates the headline with K. Sivan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, and summarizes his point as improved climate and atmospheric modelling helping scientists predict El Niño in advance and prepare for it. The article itself was not accessible, and no exact quotation or fuller context could be verified. The reported hope should therefore not be presented as a claim that El Niño will physically weaken, or as an official forecast.
What did the latest cited forecast say?
In a release dated 5 August 2026, the Ministry of Earth Sciences reported an Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) assessment that El Niño conditions had developed in May and were likely to persist from June 2026 to February 2027. The assessment assigned a 70%–90% probability to that persistence. This is a probability-based forecast, not a certainty.
A separate Ministry of Earth Sciences parliamentary reply published on 30 July 2026 said conditions had strengthened from weak in June to moderate in July, with a possibility of reaching the very strong category in October–December 2026. That dated outlook does not support interpreting the headline as evidence of an imminent scale-down. Precise intensity and Indian impacts depend on coupled ocean–atmosphere conditions.

How could El Niño affect India’s monsoon?
El Niño can influence monsoon rainfall, but it does not determine rainfall on its own. The Ministry of Earth Sciences identifies the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), regional ocean–atmosphere interactions and prevailing winds as additional influences. An event’s strength alone therefore cannot establish how much rain a particular state or district will receive.
For local decisions, use current forecasts and advisories rather than relying on a headline or a seasonal climate signal. The ministry says the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues forecasts and advisories, including daily impact-based forecasts and risk-based warnings with a seven-day validity period, while INCOIS provides coastal ocean-state forecasts and warnings.
Is “Super El Niño” an official category?
No. In its 30 July 2026 parliamentary reply, the Ministry of Earth Sciences stated: “There is no officially defined category known as a ‘Super El Nino’ by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) or the India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry.” The reply lists weak, moderate, strong and very strong categories, based on central equatorial Pacific sea-surface temperature anomalies. The phrase may appear in headlines or informal discussion, but it is not an official WMO or IMD classification.

Check the latest IMD forecasts and advisories for weather and impact guidance, and INCOIS for coastal ocean conditions. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ 5 August 2026 release, INCOIS Ocean State Forecast services cover waves, winds, swells, currents and sea-surface temperature for coastal states up to ten days in advance. Forecasts can change, so consult current advisories for the relevant location and date.
