Project Helix is Microsoft’s codename for its next-generation Xbox console. Microsoft says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and is being developed around a custom AMD processor. The company plans to begin sending alpha hardware to developers in 2027, but has not announced a consumer release date, price, or complete specifications.
What Project Helix is
Microsoft announced Project Helix at GDC on March 11, 2026, describing it as the next generation of its first-party Xbox console. Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” That is Microsoft’s stated design goal; the announcement does not explain how PC games will run or identify which titles will be compatible. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement and its Windows Experience Blog coverage provide the official context.
What Microsoft has said about the hardware
Microsoft says Helix will use a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC) and is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology. It also claims the system will deliver an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” The announcement provides no benchmark results, comparison method, or finalized specifications, so that statement should be understood as Microsoft’s claim rather than an independently measured performance result.
Will Project Helix play PC games?
Microsoft says the console is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. However, the announcement does not list supported PC games, explain whether games will run natively or through another compatibility layer, or specify any requirements for developers or players. It is reasonable to describe PC-game support as an announced direction, not as a confirmed compatibility catalog.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Microsoft’s broader goal is to reduce barriers between console and PC gaming and make the Xbox experience more consistent across screens. Its separate announcement that Xbox mode would begin rolling out on Windows 11 in April 2026, starting in select markets, concerns a Windows feature—not Project Helix hardware or its release schedule.
When is Project Helix coming out?
The only timing Microsoft has given in the cited announcement is that it plans to ship alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Ronald’s statement refers to developer hardware, not units for consumers. Microsoft has not announced a retail launch window or date, and the 2027 milestone should not be treated as a predicted console release.

What has Microsoft said about older Xbox games?
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable “for years to come.” The announcement does not provide a Helix-specific compatibility list, name the covered games, or describe the technical method. The commitment signals continuity as a company goal, but it does not establish that every game from those generations will work on Helix.
What is still unknown
The cited official announcements do not provide the details needed to assess Helix as a retail product. In particular, they do not state:

How to interpret the announcement

Microsoft has not yet supplied a consumer launch date, final specifications, or compatibility details, so comparisons of performance, price, or value against current systems are not established by the announcement.
