Texas Instruments announced TI-RTOS on December 6, 2012, as a preemptive, multithreaded real-time operating system for its microcontrollers. It bundled the SYS/BIOS kernel with networking, USB and Ethernet stacks, a file system, drivers, and board-support materials to give embedded developers a more integrated starting point.
What is TI-RTOS?
TI-RTOS is Texas Instruments’ real-time operating-system software for embedded applications built around TI microcontrollers (MCUs). Its preemptive scheduler can interrupt a lower-priority task to run a higher-priority one, supporting responsive and predictable behavior in time-sensitive applications. TI positioned the package as a way to reduce the complexity of building MCU software as devices gained peripherals, memory, and connectivity options.
At launch, TI said it brought more than 20 years of experience delivering production-quality operating-system solutions for real-time applications. That is TI’s characterization of its experience, not an independent performance measurement.
When did TI launch TI-RTOS?
TI announced TI-RTOS on December 6, 2012. The announcement described a complete RTOS for TI’s MCU platform, with a consistent software foundation intended to make it easier to move legacy applications to newer processors. TI’s Scott Roller, then vice president of MCUs, explained the motivation: “However, because of the integration of more peripherals, memory and connectivity options, software development has become more complex, which is why we created TI-RTOS.”
#1 Best Overall
- DS1302 Real-Time Clock Module: This RTC module is based on the DS1302 clock chip and provides real-time clock and calendar functions for microcontroller systems, including seconds, minutes, hours, day, week, month, and year information.
- Accurate Time and Date Tracking: The clock/calendar circuit automatically adjusts for different month lengths and year changes, making it suitable for timekeeping, scheduling, data logging, and embedded timing applications.
- Backup Battery Time Retention: Designed for low-power operation, this module uses a CR2032 backup battery to help retain clock and data information during main power interruption, making it ideal for continuous timekeeping projects.
- Static RAM and Serial Interface: In addition to RTC functionality, the DS1302 includes 31 bytes of static RAM for small data storage and communicates with microcontrollers through a simple serial interface for easy integration.
- Easy Integration and Mounting: Compatible with both 3.3V and 5V systems, this module features a through-hole IC socket for convenient chip replacement, plus 4 mounting holes for secure installation in DIY electronics and embedded projects.
What did TI-RTOS include?
The original package combined the operating-system kernel with middleware and hardware-support components, rather than requiring developers to assemble every layer separately.
- SYS/BIOS kernel: A deterministic kernel at the core of the preemptive, multithreaded system.
- Connectivity: TCP/IP networking plus USB and Ethernet protocol stacks.
- File handling: A FAT-compatible file system.
- Drivers: Support including UART, I2C, and SD, along with other drivers.
- Board support: Board-support packages and development kits, including TI MCU LaunchPads.
The exact driver set depends on the target device. TI’s current TI-RTOS-MCU information describes IPv4 and IPv6 networking, common network applications, and device-driver support that varies across TI devices. Check the package and documentation for the specific MCU rather than assuming every TI-RTOS component works on every board.

- Highly Accurate Real-Time Clock: The DS1307 ensures precise timekeeping with built-in calendar functions that automatically adjust for varying month lengths and leap years, eliminating the need for manual configuration.
- Low-Power Design: This real-time clock chip is optimized for low power consumption, making it ideal for battery-powered devices such as IoT sensors, portable electronics, and embedded systems where energy efficiency is critical.
- Data Storage: DS1307 provides 56 bytes of non-volatile memory to store user data or system configurations, enhancing its versatility in a wide range of applications.
- Easy Integration: The two-wire serial bus supports fast and reliable communication with microcontrollers and other host devices, simplifying system design and reducing hardware complexity.
- Backup Functionality: The chip includes an internal power detection circuit that automatically switches to a backup battery when main power is lost, ensuring continuous timekeeping without interruption. Note: This product does not include a battery; it requires a CR1220 battery.
How does TI-RTOS work with Code Composer Studio?
TI integrated TI-RTOS with Code Composer Studio (CCS), its development environment, and supplied board-support packages to help developers work with supported TI hardware. A TI MCU LaunchPad development kit can provide a physical target for development, but the suitable board depends on the MCU, peripherals, and connectivity the project needs. Confirm compatibility against the target device’s current TI-RTOS-MCU package and device-specific SDK documentation before choosing hardware.
What changed in TI-RTOS 2.12?
In an April 9, 2015 update, TI announced TI-RTOS 2.12 with power-management capabilities and Energia APIs aimed at connected, low-power applications. TI said the update retained pre-built and tested connectivity stacks and drivers. These are historical release details; the current capabilities and supported hardware should be checked in TI’s device-specific package information.

What is the current status of TI-RTOS?
TI’s current TI-RTOS-MCU page presents the package as downloadable and describes networking and driver support. Package naming, release status, and hardware coverage can change, and TI organizes software and drivers around particular devices. For a new project, start with the product page for the target MCU and verify the matching SDK, supported board, driver availability, and networking requirements before relying on older launch or release descriptions.
The available information does not establish that TI-RTOS has been replaced by one universal successor across all TI MCUs. Treat TI-RTOS-MCU as the current product-page reference, then follow the documentation for the exact device and package you intend to use.
