The Sisters Grimm is Michael Buckley’s children’s fantasy-mystery series about orphaned sisters Sabrina and Daphne, who discover they are descended from the Brothers Grimm and move in with their grandmother in a town where fairy-tale characters live alongside ordinary people. The books combine investigations, sibling adventures, comic twists on familiar stories, and a continuing family mystery.

What is The Sisters Grimm about?

After their parents disappear, sisters Sabrina and Daphne are sent to live with their newly discovered grandmother, Relda Grimm, in Ferryport Landing. There they learn that their family is connected to the Brothers Grimm—and that the fairy tales attributed to the brothers record the history of real characters.

When a giant causes trouble in town, the sisters are drawn into investigating what happened and dealing with Ferryport Landing’s unusual residents. The result is a fantasy mystery that reimagines classic fairy tales, rather than a collection of unrelated retellings. Abrams describes the series as “a fantasy mystery series that reimagines classic fairy tales for a new generation of readers.” Abrams’ description of the first book introduces the mystery and the town’s fairy-tale suspects.

Who are the main characters?

  • Sabrina Grimm: The older sister and one of the story’s protagonists. She is introduced alongside Daphne as an orphan who discovers the Grimm family legacy.
  • Daphne Grimm: Sabrina’s younger sister and co-protagonist.
  • Relda Grimm: The sisters’ newly discovered grandmother, who takes them in at Ferryport Landing.
  • Puck: A recurring fairy character. He appears with the sisters in the publisher’s description of the eighth novel.

Ferryport Landing is central to the premise: fairy-tale figures share the town with everyday life. The first book’s publisher description names Mayor Charming, the Three Not-So-Little Pigs, and Jack among the people connected to the mystery; these are examples, not a complete cast list.

How many books are there, and what order should you read them in?

Abrams’ series catalog lists nine numbered novels. Start with the first and read them in order, since the story continues across the series; the publisher’s description of book eight says it follows the ending of book seven.

Order Book
1 The Fairy-Tale Detectives
2 The Unusual Suspects
3 The Problem Child
4 Once Upon a Crime
5 Magic and Other Misdemeanors
6 Tales from the Hood
7 The Everafter War
8 The Inside Story
9 The Council of Mirrors

Abrams’ series catalog also lists A Very Grimm Guide, a companion title rather than a tenth numbered novel. The first novel is The Fairy-Tale Detectives. Abrams’ paperback listing identifies that edition as ISBN 9781419720055, published May 2, 2017. See the publisher’s listing for that edition.

What kind of reader might enjoy the books?

Abrams positions the series for middle-grade readers and describes the first book as a fantasy adventure. “Middle-grade” is the publisher’s audience framing, not an age restriction. The mix may appeal to readers who like mysteries with a comic tone, recognizable fairy-tale characters in unexpected roles, and a plot that develops over several books.

When deciding whether to start, consider whether you prefer investigations or quest-style adventures, a lighter comic mood or darker fantasy, and a continuing story rather than stand-alone episodes. Those are useful ways to think about the series, not a claim that every volume follows the same case structure.

Is there an animated adaptation?

Yes. Apple describes an animated fantasy-adventure series as based on Michael Buckley’s books. Its official series page lists Sabrina, Daphne, Relda, Charming, Puck, and Mirror among the adaptation’s characters; Ariel Winter voices Sabrina and Leah Newman voices Daphne. The page gives October 3, 2025 as the release date for season one and October 2, 2026 for season two. Those are adaptation details, not information about the novels, and a listed release date alone does not confirm current streaming availability.

Which The Sisters Grimm is this?

This guide covers Michael Buckley’s children’s book series. Menna van Praag also published a separate novel titled The Sisters Grimm; it has a different premise and different characters, so it is not the series described here.
