Jackdaw is an offshore gas-condensate field in the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) Central North Sea. It lies in Blocks 30/02a, 30/03a and 30/02d, roughly 250 kilometres east of Aberdeen, in about 78 metres of water and close to the UK–Norway median line. The proposed development would use a normally unattended wellhead platform, connect it by subsea pipeline to the existing Shearwater hub, and send processed gas ashore through the Fulmar Gas Line to the St Fergus Gas Plant.
The project is not an onshore gas terminal or a standalone processing plant. It is a field-development scheme whose wells and platform would be integrated with infrastructure already operating in the Central North Sea. The latest UK government record still lists the development matter as “Under Review”, with requests for additional information and developer responses continuing into 2026.

What the Jackdaw field is
Jackdaw is a reservoir development rather than a single piece of infrastructure. The field contains natural gas with associated condensate, a light hydrocarbon liquid that can be separated from the produced stream. In practical terms, wells would bring a mixture of gas and liquids to the surface, after which the connected Shearwater facilities would handle the processing needed before export.
Official environmental-statement material records the discovery in 2005. Appraisal drilling and associated evaluation took place between 2007 and 2012. Those dates describe the field’s exploration and appraisal history, not the start of commercial production. A discovery can be known for years before a development plan secures approvals, financing, infrastructure access and a workable operating schedule.

The proposed concept is deliberately compact compared with a large, permanently staffed offshore complex. The wellheads would be installed on a platform designed not to have people living on it continuously. Operations, surveillance and maintenance planning would therefore rely on remote monitoring and scheduled visits, while production would be routed to an existing processing centre rather than treated through a new onshore plant built solely for Jackdaw.
Where is Jackdaw located?
Its position in the Central North Sea
Jackdaw sits in the Central North Sea portion of the UKCS, one of the offshore areas where several fields, pipelines and production hubs are clustered. The field is on the UK side of the maritime boundary and lies near the UK/Norway median line. “Near the median line” is a geographic description: it indicates proximity to the boundary used to divide offshore jurisdiction, not that the field straddles two countries.
Coordinates and water depth
Adura’s published notice gives the proposed wellhead-platform position as 56°54′01.37″N, 02°22′45.45″E. At that location, the seabed is approximately 78 metres below sea level. That depth is shallow by the standards of many newer deepwater projects, but it is still an offshore environment requiring a fixed platform, subsea equipment, marine construction and dedicated safety systems.
Distance from Aberdeen
The field is about 250 kilometres east of Aberdeen. This is a straight-line offshore distance used to convey geographic position; it is not a sailing time or a distance along a particular vessel route. Weather, vessel speed, offshore traffic and the final logistics plan would determine how long a trip to the installation actually takes.

Relationship with Shearwater
Jackdaw is approximately 30 kilometres south-east of the Shearwater platform. That proximity is central to the development plan because Shearwater provides the existing hub to which Jackdaw’s production would be tied. The relationship is therefore both geographic and operational: the new field would use a nearby installation instead of requiring a separate processing complex.
How the proposed Jackdaw development would work
1. Drilling four production wells
The plan calls for four wells from the wellhead platform. A wellhead platform supports the well equipment and controls the flow from the reservoir; it is not, by itself, a full gas-processing facility. The number of wells is part of the proposed concept and could only be confirmed as a final operating configuration through the approved development and subsequent field performance.
2. Sending fluids through the subsea tieback
An approximately 31-kilometre subsea pipeline would carry the produced stream from the Jackdaw platform to Shearwater. A tieback of this kind can reduce the need for duplicate processing and export infrastructure, but it also makes the new field dependent on the host hub’s availability, pipeline capacity, maintenance schedule and operating conditions.

At Shearwater, the gas-condensate stream would be processed using the hub’s facilities. Processing separates and conditions the hydrocarbons so that the gas can enter the export system and the associated liquids can be managed within the approved operating arrangement. The field’s wellhead platform would therefore be only one part of a chain extending from the reservoir to the onshore terminal.

4. Exporting gas to St Fergus
After processing, the gas would travel through the Fulmar Gas Line to the St Fergus Gas Plant on the Aberdeenshire coast. St Fergus is the onshore receiving point identified for this route. This arrangement means Jackdaw’s offshore production would be connected to established UK gas infrastructure rather than delivered to a new, Jackdaw-only landfall facility.
Why the project matters to UK gas supply
Shell UK stated in 2022 that Jackdaw could account for around 6.5% of UKCS gas production at peak and provide an energy equivalent to heating more than 1.4 million UK homes. Both figures are projections attributed to Shell UK, not measurements of production already achieved. “At peak” also matters: it describes the field’s expected maximum contribution, not a guaranteed percentage maintained throughout its life.
The homes comparison converts an energy estimate into a familiar household reference. It does not mean that Jackdaw would supply gas directly to a fixed list of homes, nor does it establish how much of the gas would be consumed in any particular region. Actual output would depend on reservoir performance, commissioning, operating decisions, maintenance and the wider UKCS production system.
Using the Shearwater hub and the Fulmar Gas Line is significant because the project is designed around existing infrastructure. Reusing a host platform and export route can avoid constructing an entirely new processing and landfall chain. It also creates dependencies: capacity, integrity, shutdowns and the remaining operating life of the host and pipeline become relevant to Jackdaw’s schedule and economics.

Who is developing Jackdaw?
The project’s corporate description has changed as ownership and operator arrangements have evolved. The updated assessment says a Shell–Equinor transaction formed Adura. Following National Subsea and Petroleum Authority (NSTA) consent to assignment on 1 October 2025, UK North Sea Limited became the Jackdaw developer for the environmental-statement process from 1 November 2025.
A later Adura notice identifies Adura Operations Limited in the project application. These references describe different points in the project’s corporate and regulatory record rather than proving that the field has two independent developments. Readers should check the date and document context when interpreting a company name: a party named in an application, an environmental-statement developer and an operating company can reflect different legal roles during a transaction or assignment.
The NSTA consent date is important because an ownership or licence assignment is not complete merely because a transaction is announced. Regulatory consent determines when the relevant rights and responsibilities move within the UKCS framework. The 2025 dates therefore provide the current context for documents that previously referred to Shell or an earlier project structure.
What is the project’s regulatory status?
The latest UK government project record labels the Jackdaw Field Development matter “Under Review.” The record lists requests for further information and responses from the developer continuing into 2026. That status means the public process had not reached a final, unconditional outcome in the latest update.

“Under Review” should not be read as either an approval or a rejection. It indicates that the competent authorities are assessing the submitted material and seeking clarification or additional evidence. Until the relevant decisions and conditions are issued, the proposed platform, wells, pipeline and production timetable remain a development plan rather than an operating installation.
The environmental statement also has a time dimension. Material prepared in 2021–2022 referred to Shell and an earlier project schedule, while later documents reflect the Adura transaction, the 2025 assignment and information exchanges continuing in 2026. Comparing statements from different years without checking their date can make the ownership, schedule or regulatory position appear inconsistent when the record has simply been updated.
How to interpret maps and descriptions of Jackdaw
Field versus platform
A map may label Jackdaw as a field, a development area or a proposed platform location. Those labels are related but not interchangeable. The field is the subsurface accumulation; the platform is the planned surface facility; and the pipeline and Shearwater hub are separate infrastructure components. The coordinates published for the project identify the proposed wellhead-platform position, not the full underground boundary of the reservoir.
Blocks versus distance
UKCS block numbers identify offshore licensing areas. They are not street addresses and do not describe the field’s distance from shore. For orientation, use the block numbers alongside the Aberdeen distance, the Shearwater relationship and the stated proximity to the UK/Norway median line.
Water depth versus drilling depth
The approximately 78-metre figure describes water depth at the proposed facility. It is not the depth from the sea surface to the gas reservoir and should not be confused with the length of a well. Reservoir depth, well trajectory and geological data are separate measurements.
What Jackdaw is not
- It is not the St Fergus Gas Plant; St Fergus is the onshore destination named for exported gas.
- It is not the Shearwater field or platform, although the proposed development would use Shearwater as its processing hub.
- It is not an onshore gas storage site or a gas-fired power station.
- It is not already producing at the projected peak contribution; the 6.5% and homes-equivalent figures are forecasts attributed to Shell UK in 2022.
- It is not a completed project simply because a location and development concept have been published; the government record remains under review.
Key dates in the project record
- 2005: Jackdaw was discovered, according to the official environmental-statement summary.
- 2007–2012: The field was appraised.
- 2021–2022: Environmental-statement material described the proposed development, its infrastructure concept and the earlier Shell-led project context.
- 1 October 2025: The NSTA consented to assignment associated with the Shell–Equinor transaction that formed Adura.
- 1 November 2025: UK North Sea Limited became the developer for the environmental-statement process, according to the updated assessment.
- 2026: The latest government record continues to show the matter under review, with further-information requests and developer responses.
What readers should check for future updates
Because the project is still under review, the most useful future documents will be those that state a decision date, final conditions, the accepted operator and any changes to the platform, well count, pipeline route or tie-in arrangements. A later approval would not by itself prove that production had started; commissioning, drilling and safe operations would still be separate milestones.
For a reliable reading of any new announcement, identify four details: the publication date, the company named in the document, whether the statement concerns consent or construction, and whether figures are forecasts or measured production. This prevents a projected peak contribution from being mistaken for current UK supply and prevents an older environmental-statement description from being treated as the latest corporate structure.
