For most people, the best way to play the classic Halo games today is Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) on an Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC. MCC brings six campaigns into one package—Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4—while retaining classic visual options for the first two games and supporting current online services.
Choose an Xbox Series X for the strongest console image quality, a Series S for a lower-cost current Xbox, or Windows PC for graphics and control flexibility. Use MCC’s Classic graphics mode when you want the original-era appearance. Use original Xbox or Xbox 360 software only when strict hardware-era authenticity matters more than modern resolution, updates, saves, and online play.
Why MCC is the practical answer
MCC is not a new remake of one Halo game. It is a collection of six releases spanning more than ten years, assembled for current Xbox and Windows platforms. That makes it the most convenient single purchase for someone who wants the original campaigns, multiplayer modes, and modern installation rather than hunting down several discontinued discs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe collection preserves the structure of each game instead of replacing the series with a new interpretation. Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary include a switch between updated and Classic graphics. The remaining four games—Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and Halo 4—do not have the same Anniversary toggle, but they remain playable in their original game designs through MCC.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
MCC also avoids the biggest practical problem with a legacy-console setup: discontinued online infrastructure. The Xbox 360 online services for affected Halo games were sunset on January 13, 2022. MCC titles were rebuilt for modern services and are not covered by that shutdown.
Choose your platform
| Platform | Best for | Documented capabilities | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Living-room play and highest console image quality | Up to 4K at 60 or 120 Hz, adjustable 70–120-degree field of view, and four-player split-screen at 60 frames per second | Less graphics and control customization than a PC |
| Xbox Series S | Lower-cost current Xbox access | 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz, with the same current-console MCC approach | Lower output resolution than Series X |
| Windows PC | Resolution, frame-rate, monitor, and input flexibility | Available through Steam, Microsoft Store, or a PC Game Pass plan that includes MCC | Performance depends on your hardware and setup |
| Xbox 360 | Original-hardware authenticity and offline replay | Original Xbox 360 software and-era presentation | Online services for affected Halo games were reduced or disabled on January 13, 2022 |
The choice is therefore less about which version contains a different story and more about which trade-off you want: current convenience, image quality, and connected features, or the exact look and behavior of older hardware.
Pick Series X when the television is the priority
Series X is the strongest console choice if you have a 4K display or want a straightforward couch setup. Halo Support lists 4K output at 60 or 120 Hz, depending on the display and selected mode. The console documentation also lists an adjustable field of view from 70 to 120 degrees. Four-player split-screen is supported at 60 frames per second, making Series X a particularly good fit for local multiplayer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pick Series S when price and size matter more
Series S is the less expensive current-generation route and is suited to 1080p televisions and monitors. Official documentation lists 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz. You still get the MCC package, current updates, and modern online functionality; the principal hardware difference for this use is output resolution rather than a different set of campaigns.
Pick Windows PC for configuration freedom
On Windows, MCC can be obtained through Steam, the Microsoft Store, or a PC Game Pass plan that includes it. A PC lets you choose a monitor resolution, adjust graphics settings, select a keyboard and mouse or controller, and tune frame-rate behavior to your hardware. The trade-off is that you must meet the game’s requirements and troubleshoot drivers, display settings, or controller pairing if they cause problems.

Use Xbox 360 only for a deliberate authenticity project
An original Xbox 360 copy is the strictest way to experience the games that do not have an Anniversary graphics switch in MCC. It also reproduces the older console’s menus, image processing, controller behavior, and loading characteristics. That route is best treated as an offline or local replay. The January 13, 2022 service sunset means you should not buy a 360 setup expecting the same online features available in MCC.
What you actually receive in MCC
The core collection contains six games:
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- Halo 2 Anniversary
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 4
Reach and ODST were added after MCC’s original 2014 release. Their entitlement rules can differ by platform. On Xbox, their campaigns and Firefight content may be separate purchases. On PC, the official entitlement information says they are included with MCC or can be bought separately; Game Pass access depends on the subscription and the applicable regional storefront. Check the listing shown for your account before buying if you only want one of those games.

Xbox Series X|S
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console and search for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
- Review the edition and the included or separately listed Reach and ODST entitlements before completing the purchase.
- Choose Install and allow the collection and any selected game components to finish downloading.
- Sign in with the Xbox account you intend to use for campaign saves, achievements, and multiplayer.
- Launch MCC and install the campaign, multiplayer, or Firefight components you plan to play if the collection presents them as optional downloads.
Windows PC through Steam
- Open Steam, search for MCC, and verify that the package or individual add-on you select contains the games you want.
- Install MCC to the drive with enough free space for the collection and future updates.
- Start the game, sign in when prompted, and allow cloud synchronization to complete before beginning a campaign.
- Open the in-game settings to select display mode, resolution, field of view, graphics options, and controller or keyboard bindings.
Windows PC through Microsoft Store
- Search the Microsoft Store for MCC and select the edition associated with your Microsoft account.
- Install the Xbox app if the store directs you to it, then start MCC from the Xbox app after installation.
- Confirm that the account used for the purchase or Game Pass subscription is the same account used in the Xbox app.
- Install the individual campaigns or multiplayer components offered by the collection.
PC Game Pass
Game Pass can include MCC, but the exact qualifying plan and regional catalog can change. Open the Game Pass catalog for your country, search for MCC, and verify that the plan you hold includes the collection before relying on the subscription. If access ends, your subscription entitlement ends with it; a separately purchased copy is not subject to that catalog change.
How to keep the original visual feel
Use Classic graphics in Combat Evolved
Start Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, open the campaign’s visual or graphics toggle, and switch between Anniversary and Classic presentation. Classic mode restores the original visual style while you retain MCC’s modern platform and service environment. Use it when original-era lighting, textures, and atmosphere are more important than the updated presentation.
Use Classic graphics in Halo 2
Halo 2 Anniversary provides the same kind of in-game visual switch. You can compare the Anniversary presentation with the original graphics without leaving the mission. This is the closest MCC comes to offering both versions in one convenient package.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Know the limit for Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and 4
Those four games do not have the same Anniversary toggle. MCC is still the convenient way to play them on current hardware, but it cannot switch them to an original-versus-remastered visual mode in the way it can for the first two games. If that distinction is essential, use original Xbox 360 software for those titles and accept the loss of modern online support.
Which order should you play?
Release order: best for a first playthrough
For a new player, follow the order in which the series introduced its mechanics and story:
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 4
Halo Support’s quick-start guidance tells players to begin with the Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign when they want release order. Playing Halo 2 before ODST also gives the side story the context it assumes: ODST takes place during the Halo 2 era.
Chronological order: best for timeline continuity
Returning players who already know the series can use the story timeline:
- Halo: Reach
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo 3
- Halo 4
This order starts with the events immediately preceding the first game, but it also means a newcomer encounters later-developed mechanics and references before seeing how the original series established them.

Campaign, multiplayer, and local play on modern hardware
MCC supports campaign and multiplayer options on current Xbox and Windows platforms, with modern online services rather than the retired Xbox 360 service layer. On Series X, official enhancement information specifically lists four-player split-screen at 60 frames per second. That makes a current Xbox the simplest choice for a living-room group that wants local campaign or multiplayer sessions.
On PC, local play depends on the controllers, display arrangement, and Windows configuration you provide. Online play requires the appropriate account and service access for your platform. A Game Pass catalog inclusion is an entitlement question, not a guarantee that every region or plan exposes the same content indefinitely.
Save data and moving between platforms
Most MCC save data transfers among Xbox, the Xbox PC app, and Steam. The official information includes completed missions and playlists among the data that can carry over. To reduce conflicts, sign in with the same account where applicable, allow synchronization to finish, and avoid launching the game on two devices while one has unsynchronized progress.
A practical migration sequence is:
- Finish or exit the game normally on the original device so the latest progress can upload.
- Wait for the platform’s cloud-sync indicator to complete.
- Install MCC on the new Xbox or Windows storefront and sign in with the account containing the save.
- Launch the game and choose the synchronized save when prompted.
- Check a completed mission or playlist before deleting local data from the old device.
Cross-platform transfer does not turn a separately purchased entitlement into a universal license. You may still need to own the collection or the relevant add-on on the platform where you want to play it.

Cost and entitlement decisions
| Purchase route | What it means | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| One-time MCC purchase | Permanent license for the edition and platform account you buy | Check whether Reach and ODST are included in that storefront listing |
| Separate Reach or ODST purchase | Lets you add an individual campaign or Firefight entitlement | Xbox and PC listings can handle these add-ons differently |
| Qualifying Game Pass subscription | Access while the applicable plan and regional catalog include MCC | Plan eligibility and availability can change; verify before subscribing |
| Original Xbox 360 disc or digital license | Original-hardware presentation and offline access | Modern online features are limited after the January 13, 2022 service sunset |
Do not assume that owning one Xbox or PC version automatically grants every other storefront version. Review the platform’s current entitlement page, especially if your goal is only Reach or ODST.

Common problems and fixes
The game looks too modern
In Combat Evolved Anniversary or Halo 2 Anniversary, use the in-game Classic graphics toggle. If you are playing Halo 3, ODST, Reach, or Halo 4, MCC does not provide the same switch; original Xbox 360 software is the alternative for a stricter period look.
Reach or ODST is locked
Open the store listing for the account and platform you are using. Confirm whether the game is included with your MCC edition, must be purchased separately, or is available through your current Game Pass plan. A subscription entitlement may differ by region and plan.
Old Xbox 360 multiplayer no longer works
This is expected for affected Halo games after the January 13, 2022 Xbox 360 server shutdown. Use the corresponding MCC title on a current Xbox or Windows PC for modern online services.

The PC version performs poorly
Check that Windows is using the intended display resolution and refresh rate, select a frame-rate option appropriate to your monitor, and update the graphics driver. Best setup by type of player
| Your priority | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First-time story player | MCC on Series X|S or PC, release order | All six games are organized in one collection and the narrative unfolds as originally introduced |
| Original look for CE and Halo 2 | MCC with Classic graphics enabled | You can switch to the original visual presentation without changing hardware |
| Strict authenticity for every title | Original Xbox 360 copies and offline play | Only original software reproduces the complete era-specific presentation, but online services are constrained |
| Best console image quality | Xbox Series X | 4K at 60 or 120 Hz and a 70–120-degree adjustable field of view |
| Lower-cost current console | Xbox Series S | 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz with current MCC support |
| Flexible monitor and controls | Windows PC through Steam or Microsoft Store | More options for resolution, input, and graphics configuration |
| Already subscribed to Game Pass | The PC or Xbox version included in your qualifying plan | Try MCC without a separate purchase while the plan and regional catalog include it |
Final recommendation
Buy Halo: The Master Chief Collection for Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC unless reproducing original hardware is your primary goal. Series X is the premium console option, Series S is the sensible 1080p choice, and PC is best when you want display and control flexibility. Start in release order, turn on Classic graphics for Combat Evolved and Halo 2 when desired, and verify the separate Reach/ODST and Game Pass entitlements shown for your platform.
