For photographers who want to make deliberate choices while shooting, the iPhone 18 Pro’s standout camera feature is Pro Controls, not its variable aperture. Tom’s Guide reviewer says that after using the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the breadth of the manual controls mattered more than the new aperture mechanism. That is a reviewer’s judgment, not a universal verdict: people who prefer automatic point-and-shoot results may care more about the camera choosing aperture for them.

What Pro Controls does on iPhone 18 Pro

Pro Controls brings several capture decisions into Apple’s Camera app. Apple lists controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, along with a histogram, for both photo and video capture. Tom’s Guide also describes manual focus and other settings in its account of using the interface. Apple’s technical specifications and the reviewer’s account describe the feature’s scope.

The practical difference is access: instead of relying entirely on automatic decisions, you can adjust multiple parts of the capture process. A histogram gives a visual indication of tonal distribution, while shutter speed and white balance let you shape exposure and color. The feature is most compelling if you already want to make those choices; it does not make them necessary for every photo.

What variable aperture changes—and where it works

Variable aperture is a physical feature of the iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main camera. Apple specifies four aperture settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Six laser-cut blades move to change the opening. A wider aperture lets in more light and can produce shallower depth of field; a narrower one admits less light and can increase the area that appears in focus.

Apple says the camera automatically selects aperture according to lighting and depth-of-field needs, and that users can choose among the four settings manually in the Camera app. Developers can also access aperture control through an API in their own apps. The mechanism applies to the Main camera; it is not a variable-aperture system across every rear lens. Apple’s announcement explains the blade mechanism and its automatic and manual operation.

Which feature matters more for your shooting?

If you care most about… The more relevant feature Why
Letting the camera adapt to light and depth of field Variable aperture Apple says the Main camera can select an aperture automatically for these conditions.
Choosing exposure and color settings yourself Pro Controls It provides direct access to aperture, shutter speed and white balance, plus a histogram.
Controlling depth of field on the Main camera Both Aperture is one of the Pro Controls and is also physical camera hardware; the software controls do not replace the mechanism.
Making a universal “best feature” choice No established winner The available sources do not provide an independent controlled comparison of user preferences or image results.

That distinction explains the headline without dismissing the aperture hardware. Variable aperture is a notable new component, especially if you want the camera to adapt or you want to change depth of field. Pro Controls offers a broader set of choices in one interface, which is why it can be the more consequential upgrade for a hands-on shooter. That is an interpretation of the documented capabilities, not a measured performance result.

What Apple claims—and what has not been independently established

Apple says the new Main camera and imaging pipeline improve low-light photography and detail in group photos. Those are manufacturer claims; the cited materials do not include an independent controlled test establishing how large the improvements are. Apple’s Greg Joswiak described the system as offering “more versatility for creators and more control for pros,” a marketing characterization rather than a user study. Apple’s launch announcement contains the claims and quotation.

How Pro Controls fits into the wider camera system

The iPhone 18 Pro is not just its Main camera and aperture. Apple lists a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera at 100 mm (4x), with an 8x optical-quality option at 200 mm. The system also supports 48MP macro photography, ProRAW, and 4K Dolby Vision video; Cinematic mode reaches 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps. These capabilities give photographers and video makers other reasons to use the camera system, but they do not change what Pro Controls or variable aperture does. Full details are in Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications.

Availability and a third-party aperture option

Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with preorders scheduled to begin September 12 and general availability September 18, according to its announcement.

A Cinco Días / Smartlife report dated October 2, 2026 says Halide Mark III version 3.2 adds finer aperture adjustment across the iPhone 18 Pro’s physical range, along with aperture-priority and manual modes. That is secondary reporting; it does not establish current release availability, supported-device details or the precise behavior in every workflow. Check the app developer’s current information before relying on those features. The report is available here.
