The Beehive Cluster is Messier 44 (M44), also called Praesepe: an open star cluster in the constellation Cancer. Find Cancer between Gemini and Leo, use Pollux, Regulus and Procyon as landmarks, then look near Cancer’s center for a faint, cloudy glow. Under good sky conditions you can see it without optical aid; binoculars reveal more of its stars.

What is the Beehive Cluster?

M44, the Beehive Cluster and Praesepe are three names for the same open cluster in Cancer. NASA describes it as containing about 1,000 stars and lying roughly 550 light-years away; both figures are approximate. NASA Science Photojournal gives those rounded estimates.

The cluster spans about 1.5 degrees across the sky—approximately the width of three full Moons. Its apparent size helps explain why a wide view is useful when observing it. NASA’s Messier 44 guide provides the angular-size estimate.

Where is M44 in the sky?

Look for Cancer between Gemini and Leo. Cancer is comparatively faint, so use its brighter neighboring constellations and nearby stars as signposts rather than expecting the constellation itself to stand out.

  • Procyon is in Canis Minor.

Once oriented, look near the center of Cancer, just above the meeting point of its upside-down Y-shaped branches. NASA’s “Dim Delights in Cancer” guide describes these landmarks and the cluster’s position.

How to find and observe the Beehive Cluster

  1. Choose a clear evening when Cancer is above your horizon. In the Northern Hemisphere, spring is a useful general viewing season, and M44 reaches its highest point in March. The precise best time depends on your date and location.
  2. Find Gemini and Leo, then identify Pollux, Regulus and Procyon to help orient yourself.
  3. Search near the center of Cancer, above the junction of its Y-shaped branches. Look for a soft, faint patch rather than a sharply defined naked-eye object.
  4. If you have binoculars, sweep the area slowly. Their wider view makes it easier to take in the cluster, and NASA says binoculars can resolve around 20 stars.

What can you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope?

Viewing method What to expect Best suited to
Naked eye A faint, cloudy blur under good sky conditions. Spotting the cluster without equipment.
Binoculars A more resolved view; NASA says around 20 stars can be resolved. Seeing individual cluster stars while keeping a broad view.
Wide-field telescope NASA lists it as a suitable option; the cited guidance does not quantify its performance against binoculars. Observers who already have access to a wide-field telescope.

NASA describes the unaided-eye view as a faint, cloudy patch and says the cluster is striking through binoculars or a wide-field telescope. Read NASA’s observing guidance for its description.

When is the best time to look?

For Northern Hemisphere observers, M44 is best seen in spring and reaches its highest point in March. Those are general seasonal guides, not a promise of visibility at a particular hour: the cluster’s position and observing time depend on your location and the date. For a useful view, wait until Cancer is above the horizon and choose a clear, dark-enough sky.
