BEAM is the virtual machine that executes compiled Elixir and Erlang code. Elixir source is compiled into BEAM-compatible object code, typically stored in .beam files; the Erlang runtime system loads the code, and BEAM executes its instructions. BEAM is the instruction-execution machine, not the whole runtime system.

BEAM and ERTS are different layers

BEAM is the abstract machine that executes instructions in compiled Erlang-family code, including Elixir. ERTS—the Erlang Run-Time System—is the broader runtime environment around it. As Erlang/OTP maintainer John Högberg explains in A brief introduction to BEAM, BEAM handles instruction execution; facilities such as processes, ports, and ETS belong to the surrounding runtime rather than being concepts the machine itself needs to understand.

Keeping the distinction clear helps explain the path from a source file to a running application: the compiler produces object code, the runtime loads modules, and BEAM executes their instructions.

How Elixir code gets to the BEAM

  1. Write Elixir source. You create modules and functions in Elixir files.
  2. Compile the source. The Elixir compiler produces object code compatible with the Erlang runtime. The Erlang/OTP 26 Compilation and Code Loading reference describes programs as being compiled to object code. That code is commonly saved in a .beam file, though a compiler can also return the object code as a binary for direct loading.
  3. Load the module. The runtime’s code-loading system makes the compiled module available. Loading is distinct from executing its instructions.
  4. Run its code. BEAM executes the module’s instructions when the program calls its functions.

This is a useful conceptual sequence, not a requirement that every workflow write a file to disk: compiled object code can be loaded from a binary as well.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What BEAM instructions represent

A practical mental model is a register machine. BEAM instructions operate on named registers that can hold Erlang terms—the values used by Erlang-family languages. Högberg’s primer describes this model in more detail. These are abstract-machine instructions, not the native instruction set of the computer’s processor.

That distinction matters when describing execution. A .beam file contains BEAM object code; it should not be mistaken for a file of ordinary host-CPU instructions.

Where JIT compilation fits

BEAM describes the abstract machine, not one fixed method of translating its instructions into processor work. Erlang/OTP 25 documentation describes BeamAsm as a just-in-time (JIT) implementation that translates BEAM instructions into machine code. This is an implementation detail of that OTP line, not the definition of BEAM or a guarantee that every BEAM installation and release follows an identical execution path.

In short, BEAM instructions are the virtual-machine level; a JIT such as BeamAsm can translate them into native machine code at runtime in supported implementations.

What a .beam file does—and does not—tell you

BEAM object files are structured into chunks, and the presence of source-level abstract code or debug information depends on how the code was compiled. The older Erlang/OTP 18 beam_lib manual documents the chunked file format. The Erlang/OTP 26 compiler manual describes debug-information options and notes that tools such as Debugger, Xref, and Cover use that information.

Consequently, a .beam file does not necessarily include source-level debug data. Its extension identifies compiled BEAM object code; it does not, by itself, promise that debugging or analysis information is present.

What does BEAM stand for?

The Erlang/OTP FAQ lists the historical expansion “Bogdan/Björn’s Erlang Abstract Machine.” The name is now most useful as the label for the abstract machine that executes Erlang-family object code; the FAQ’s Implementations and Ports of Erlang provides the historical aside.
