The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship runs two contests at once: a professional individual stroke-play tournament and a pro-am team competition. During the first three rounds, each professional-amateur pair plays St Andrews’ Old Course, Carnoustie’s Championship Course and Kingsbarns Golf Links once apiece. The final round is at the Old Course. After round three, the top 60 professionals and ties and the top 20 teams advance.

How the two competitions work

The championship format page describes a field of 168 professionals paired with 168 amateurs. Each professional competes for the individual title; the amateur partner contributes only to the separate team leaderboard. The two results therefore measure different things: the pro’s own stroke-play total and the combined pair’s hole-by-hole team score. Official championship format

Individual professional competition

Professionals play their own stroke-play event. The amateur’s score does not replace or alter the professional’s individual result.

Team pro-am competition

On each hole, the team counts the lower of the professional’s score and the amateur’s net score. The amateur receives two-thirds of their official handicap, with the allowance capped at 18 for men and 24 for women. That handicap allowance is used to calculate the amateur’s net score for the team contest. Official championship format

How the three-course rotation and cut work

Each pair plays one round at each of the three courses over the opening three rounds. The draw sets the order for a particular pair; not every pair necessarily starts at the same venue. The fourth and final round is played at the Old Course.

  1. Rounds 1–3: Play one round each at the Old Course, Carnoustie Championship Course and Kingsbarns Golf Links, in the order set by the draw.
  2. After round 3: The leading 60 professionals and ties and the leading 20 teams make the cut.
  3. Final round: Qualifying professionals and teams continue at the Old Course.

The professional and team competitions have separate cut lines: qualifying as an individual does not by itself mean a team is among the top 20, and vice versa. Official championship format

What each course contributes

Course Role in the event Character described by the organizer
Old Course, St Andrews One of the three opening-round venues and the sole final-round venue. The championship calls it the “Home of Golf” and notes golf has been played there for hundreds of years.
Carnoustie Championship Course One of the three rotating opening-round venues. The course guide describes it as one of the most challenging links courses and points to the Barry Burn winding around the closing two holes.
Kingsbarns Golf Links One of the three rotating opening-round venues. The organizer presents it as a coastal, risk-and-reward links course designed by Kyle Phillips and Mark Parsinen, and calls it a “Modern Classic.”

These are the organizer’s descriptions, not a measured ranking of course difficulty. In practical terms, the Old Course supplies the event’s historic setting and finale; Carnoustie is framed as the testing venue; and Kingsbarns adds a newer coastal links layout.
