Otter Pup 2 is a Starfish Space technology-demonstration spacecraft designed to approach and attempt to dock with an unprepared commercial satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its target is a D-Orbit ION vehicle. The mission is testing navigation, autonomous maneuvering and capture technologies that could eventually support satellite life extension and end-of-life disposal; Otter Pup 2 itself is not a satellite-repair service.

What is Otter Pup 2?

Otter Pup 2 is Starfish Space’s second Otter Pup demonstration mission. Starfish announced on May 20, 2025 that it planned to demonstrate rendezvous and proximity operations, followed by an attempted docking with a D-Orbit ION spacecraft. NASA’s 2025 In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) catalog lists it as an operational 2025 demonstration intended to validate rendezvous, proximity operations and docking (RPOD) systems on a D-Orbit-developed client spacecraft.

The important test is not routine repair. It is whether a servicing spacecraft can autonomously find, approach and make contact with a satellite that was not built with a docking fixture. Many existing spacecraft lack such cooperative interfaces, which makes servicing them more difficult than connecting to a purpose-built client.

How could it help extend a satellite’s life?

A satellite that remains useful but can no longer maneuver reliably may be limited by its propulsion, attitude-control capability or other aging systems. A future servicing vehicle that can safely approach and capture an existing satellite could potentially help it maintain its orbit or otherwise continue operating. Starfish’s broader Otter business targets life extension for geostationary satellites and disposal of LEO spacecraft.

Otter Pup 2 is a technology bridge toward those services, not a demonstration that it has extended the life of its D-Orbit target. Its planned contact test addresses a key prerequisite: showing that an autonomous servicer can work with an unprepared spacecraft. It does not, by itself, establish that a commercial life-extension service is ready or that a client satellite has been repaired.

How does Otter Pup 2 navigate and capture its target?

Starfish’s announced system combines software for relative navigation and maneuvering with a physical capture mechanism. The mission hardware and roles described by Starfish and its partners include:

  • Package Contents: The rocket model comes in an exquisite gift box and includes a sturdy bracket with a recovery ship pattern. It is perfect as a living room decoration or a gift
  • Product Features: All four flaps are movable. It weighs 1.1 pounds and has a great feel. The surface paint is fine and the details are handled excellently
  • SpaceX History: The Starship has a reusable feature and boasts the largest payload capacity in the world. With multiple and rapid iterations and upgrades, the Starship is on the verge of a successful launch and recovery
  • Best Gift for Boys: This model is an excellent gift for aerospace enthusiasts, making it a fantastic birthday present and keepsake. It is suitable for display in the living room, study, or office
  • CETACEAN: computer-vision software that estimates the target spacecraft’s relative position and orientation.
  • CEPHALOPOD: autonomous guidance and control software for planning and executing safe approach and docking maneuvers.
  • Nautilus: Starfish’s capture mechanism. Otter Pup 2 carries an electrostatic version designed to adhere to flat satellite surfaces.
  • Electric propulsion: ThrustMe thrusters are identified as mission hardware.
  • Imaging: Starfish identifies Redwire’s Argus camera system; Redwire later described SentinelCAM support for the demonstration.
  • Spacecraft bus and components: Astro Digital manufactured and integrated the bus, and Honeybee Robotics contributed Nautilus components.

Together, the vision system and control software are intended to help the servicer judge where the client is and maneuver relative to it; Nautilus provides the contact-and-capture function. The system is significant because the target is an existing commercial spacecraft rather than a client designed around a cooperative docking port.

Was Otter Pup 2 supposed to dock, and did it succeed?

Yes. Starfish’s May 20, 2025 announcement described an attempted docking with a D-Orbit ION spacecraft after rendezvous and proximity operations. The planned launch was on SpaceX’s Transporter-14 rideshare, no earlier than June 2025, with docking attempts later in 2025.

The latest dated primary update in the available mission record is Starfish Space’s April 7, 2026 funding announcement, which described Otter Pup 2 as ongoing. That update does not confirm a successful docking. NASA’s 2025 ISAM catalog records the demonstration as operational, but that designation is not confirmation that capture succeeded. The supported description is therefore an ongoing demonstration with an attempted docking as its objective—not a confirmed successful dock.

What happens when a satellite reaches the end of its mission?

End-of-mission plans depend on the spacecraft’s orbit and remaining ability to maneuver. Starfish identifies disposal of LEO spacecraft as one target for its broader Otter business: a servicer capable of rendezvous and capture could potentially help remove an inoperable object from a useful orbit. In geostationary orbit, Starfish’s stated focus includes extending the service life of satellites that might otherwise stop providing service.

NASA Apollo 11 Command Capsule Spacecraft with Interior Model Kit Revell, Various
  • Apollo 11 Command Capsule
  • Non assembled plastic model kit
  • Package Weight: 1.14 kilograms
  • Package Dimensions: 12.2 L x 47.0 H x 33.6 W (centimeters)

These are different uses of servicing technology. Life extension aims to keep a useful satellite operating; disposal aims to reduce the risks posed by spacecraft left in orbit. Otter Pup 2’s docking demonstration tests technology relevant to both, but the mission announcement does not say that Otter Pup 2 is performing either commercial service.

How does Otter Pup 2 relate to NASA’s SSPICY Otter 24C?

NASA’s SSPICY mission is a larger follow-on application of Starfish technology, focused on inspection rather than Otter Pup 2’s docking demonstration. NASA says the 335-kilogram Otter 24C is expected to launch in late 2026 and inspect up to four inoperable U.S.-origin objects, with inspections expected to begin in 2027 and the mission expected to last about two years. NASA’s 2024 funding article says the Phase III SBIR award is $15 million over three years.

Otter Pup 2 Technology demonstration with a D-Orbit ION commercial spacecraft in LEO; Starfish announced the target was unprepared. Rendezvous, proximity operations and attempted docking. Starfish’s May 20, 2025 announcement planned a Transporter-14 launch no earlier than June 2025 and docking attempts later in 2025. Starfish described the mission as ongoing on April 7, 2026; no successful docking is confirmed in those updates.
SSPICY Otter 24C Inspection mission targeting up to four inoperable U.S.-origin objects. NASA lists the spacecraft mass as 335 kilograms. NASA describes inspections; the mission is an application of Starfish technology, not the Otter Pup 2 docking demonstration. NASA’s mission page says launch is expected in late 2026, inspections are expected to begin in 2027, and the mission is expected to last approximately two years.

NASA names Manta, Nautilus, CETACEAN and CEPHALOPOD as enabling technologies for SSPICY. This illustrates how the technology family can be applied to a distinct in-space servicing task: gathering information about the physical condition of stranded or inoperable spacecraft, rather than extending a satellite’s service through a docking demonstration.
