If Windows displays “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” and a path ending in WindowsSystem32LogFilesSrtSrtTrail.txt, SrtTrail.txt is the log created by Windows Startup Repair. It is not, by itself, a diagnosis of a failed hard drive or a specific corrupted file. Read the findings in the log, determine which startup phase failed, and choose the least-destructive recovery method that matches that evidence.
What SrtTrail.txt means
Microsoft documents the file at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. Startup Repair writes diagnostic details there after Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) examines boot and startup problems. The path tells you that Startup Repair ran, or is reporting its log; it does not identify one universal cause.
Startup failures can involve the boot configuration data (BCD), boot files or the master boot record, disk corruption, missing or damaged system files, an unfinished update, an incompatible driver, or a damaged registry hive. The useful part of SrtTrail.txt is the reported test, failure phase, and status—not the filename alone.
Before changing anything: capture the evidence
- Write down the complete on-screen message and the full SrtTrail.txt path.
- In the log, note the Windows volume, the tests that ran, and any named file, error code, or “root cause” statement.
- Record whether the failure occurs before the Windows logo, during the kernel or driver stage, after an update, or while signing in.
- Do not apply every command you find online. Boot-loader repairs, file repairs, disk checks, update rollback, and registry recovery address different failure types.
A power interruption can also trigger WinRE failover even when the underlying installation is not permanently damaged. Treat the log and the startup symptoms together.

First recovery attempt: Startup Repair in WinRE
When WinRE opens, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. This built-in tool checks and repairs common startup problems, including damaged boot files, BCD data, some system-file problems, incompatible drivers, and certain registry errors. It is an attempt, not a guarantee.
If the device is protected with BitLocker, WinRE can request the BitLocker recovery key. Retrieve that key before proceeding; without it, encrypted data and recovery actions may be inaccessible.
Match the repair to the failure phase
Boot loader, BCD, or boot-file failure
If the log points to missing or corrupt boot files, BCD data, an MBR, or a boot-sector problem, use the boot-repair procedure for your Windows version from WinRE or installation media. Do not rewrite boot data merely because SrtTrail.txt exists; confirm that the reported tests concern the boot phase.
Disk or file-system corruption
When the evidence indicates file-system errors or unreadable sectors, an offline disk check may be appropriate. In WinRE, drive letters often differ from those used during normal Windows operation. Identify the Windows volume first, then run a command suited to that volume, such as CHKDSK /f where Microsoft’s instructions for your edition and scenario call for it.
Missing or damaged Windows system files
For system-file corruption, use the documented offline System File Checker and, where applicable, Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repair sequence. Typical Microsoft examples include offline SFC and DISM /image:<Windows-volume> /cleanup-image /restorehealth. The correct syntax, source files, and applicability vary by Windows edition; substitute the actual Windows-volume letter discovered in WinRE rather than assuming C:.
Pending update action
If startup began failing immediately after an update and the log identifies pending package operations, use Microsoft’s update-startup troubleshooting procedure to inspect or revert pending actions when that procedure applies. Do not treat update rollback as a general-purpose fix for unrelated boot errors.
Driver or registry problem
A named incompatible driver may require removing or rolling back that driver from the appropriate recovery option. For a corrupt registry hive, Microsoft recommends using a System Restore point when available. Windows 10 version 1803 and later no longer automatically maintain a usable RegBack registry backup, so do not assume copying files from that folder will restore the registry.

Find the Windows volume before offline commands
WinRE assigns drive letters independently of normal Windows. The partition shown as C: while Windows is running may appear as another letter in recovery.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Use Microsoft’s WinRE guidance, including BCDEdit where appropriate, to identify the partition containing the Windows directory.
- Verify the result by checking for the expected
Windowsfolder before running offline CHKDSK, SFC, or DISM. - Use only the command sequence that matches the finding in SrtTrail.txt and the Microsoft instructions for your Windows edition.
Running a command against the wrong partition can waste time or alter the wrong volume. If a command reports that the path or image is invalid, stop and re-check the volume letter and command syntax.
When local WinRE will not open
Boot configuration damage, a damaged recovery partition or boot sector, or a missing boot manager can prevent automatic access to the on-disk recovery environment. Create or use suitable Windows installation media or bootable WinRE media on another computer, start the affected PC from that media, and select Repair your computer to reach the same troubleshooting tools.
A blank USB flash drive becomes useful only after appropriate Windows installation or recovery media has been created. Use media that matches the installed Windows release as closely as possible, and preserve the existing installation rather than selecting a clean installation unless that is your deliberate plan.

| Option | Use when | Access | Data impact and prerequisites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | WinRE identifies a common boot or startup problem | On-disk WinRE, or installation/recovery media | Designed to preserve personal files; BitLocker recovery key may be required |
| Command-line repair | The log identifies boot, disk, system-file, or update evidence that a specific command addresses | WinRE Command Prompt | Requires the correct Windows-volume letter; syntax and applicability vary by edition |
| System Restore | A restore point predates the startup failure, including some registry or driver problems | WinRE Advanced options | Reverts system state to the selected point; availability depends on existing restore points |
| System-image restoration | You have a known-good image and need to return to that captured state | WinRE and the image storage | Replaces programs, settings, and files with those in the image |
| Recovery-drive reinstall or reset | Repair has failed and you accept a larger rebuild | Recovery drive or supported Windows recovery path | Can remove personal files, apps, and settings; back up important data first |
Protect data before destructive recovery
Before resetting, reinstalling, or restoring an image, copy important files to external storage when you can access them, and confirm what the selected option removes. An external drive is for backup; it does not repair SrtTrail.txt. System-image restoration replaces the current system with the image, while a recovery-drive reinstall removes personal files, apps, and settings according to the selected recovery path.

- Assuming SrtTrail.txt proves the disk has failed.
- Running boot commands, CHKDSK, SFC, and DISM in an arbitrary batch without identifying the failure phase.

RegBackcopy without confirming that a valid backup exists. - Resetting or reinstalling before securing files and checking BitLocker access.
- Continuing repeated repair loops without documenting new symptoms or error messages.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the log repeatedly reports storage errors, the volume cannot be read, or repairs fail after the correct procedure for the identified phase, prioritize data recovery and hardware diagnosis. If files are backed up and the evidence points to irreparable system damage, choose a reinstall or image restore with full awareness of its data impact rather than treating another copy of Startup Repair as a different solution.
The Bottom Line
SrtTrail.txt is Startup Repair’s diagnostic log, not a diagnosis by itself. Read its reported failure phase, identify the real Windows volume in WinRE, use the matching Microsoft recovery procedure, and protect your data before any reset, image restore, or reinstall.
