Benefits and How to Use It. SRT stands for Secure Reliable Transport: an open-source protocol that carries live audio and video between compatible endpoints over IP networks. Its main advantage is recovering missing packets and adapting to jitter and bandwidth changes on unpredictable links. It is a transport method—not a complete streaming platform—and both ends of the connection must support it.
How SRT works
SRT is designed to help deliver media across networks where packets may be delayed or lost. When the receiver detects a missing packet, it can ask the sender to retransmit it using Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ). Timing and latency mechanisms give those packets a window to arrive so the receiver can reconstruct a continuous stream.
That recovery window is a trade-off: allowing more time can improve the chance of recovering lost packets, but adds latency. A very tight latency setting leaves less time for retransmission. SRT can mitigate loss and jitter within the available network and configured recovery window; it cannot create bandwidth, eliminate severe congestion, or guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
Haivision describes SRT as “an open source transport technology that optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks, such as the Internet.” Haivision’s SRT overview and the official SRT project README explain the protocol and its implementation.

What SRT is—and is not
SRT transports media between a source and a receiver. A typical workflow might send a feed from a production site to a cloud service or another broadcast endpoint. The receiving service must accept SRT, or the workflow needs a receiver or gateway that converts the feed to a format the next stage accepts. Do not assume a consumer streaming platform accepts direct SRT input; verify the current input options for the service you plan to use.
The protocol is content-agnostic: it carries media rather than deciding how a viewer discovers or watches it. SRT alone does not provide a channel, audience, video hosting, or final delivery to viewers.

Benefits and trade-offs
| Area | What SRT can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Packet recovery | Request retransmission of missing packets when they can arrive within the configured latency window. | Network loss, congestion, and the latency setting determine how much recovery is possible. |
| Latency | Provide a configurable recovery window suited to the link and workflow. | There is no single setting that is right for every connection; tighter settings reduce recovery time. |
| Encryption | Support AES media-payload encryption. | Confirm that encryption is enabled and that compatible settings are configured at both endpoints. |
| Network traversal | Support rendezvous behavior and outbound connection patterns that can help in some firewall scenarios. | Firewall rules, network policy, and endpoint configuration still determine whether a connection works. |
| Implementation | Run SRT through open-source software; dedicated encoders, decoders, and gateways are optional paths. | Confirm the feature set and compatibility of the particular software or device. |
The SRT Alliance says more than 700 broadcasters, cloud platforms, device manufacturers, and streaming providers rely on SRT; that is the Alliance’s own claim, accessed in 2026, not an independently audited count. See the SRT Alliance website.
What you need before using SRT
- An SRT-capable sender and receiver: This may be software, a service, or hardware. Confirm that the intended receiving service supports SRT input.
- Connection details: Both ends need compatible connection mode and address/port information. The exact fields and names depend on the implementation.
- A latency setting: Choose a value appropriate to the network’s variability and the workflow’s delay tolerance, following the product’s documentation. Avoid treating a value from another setup as universal.
- Matching encryption configuration, if required: Enable it and configure compatible settings on both endpoints.
- Network access: Check the relevant firewall and routing policy. Rendezvous or outbound connection options may help in some environments, but do not guarantee firewall compatibility.
How to set up an SRT link
- Check the receiving end first. Confirm that the destination accepts SRT and note its supported connection modes, address and port requirements, encryption options, and compatibility guidance. If it does not accept SRT, identify a compatible receiver or gateway that can convert the signal for the next stage.
- Choose an SRT-capable source. Use software or a hardware encoder that can send SRT. Hardware is not a requirement; it is one option for a managed production workflow.
- Set compatible connection details. Configure the sender and receiver using the mode and network information supported by both implementations. Ensure firewall rules allow the required traffic.
- Set latency for the actual link. Use the sender or receiver’s product-specific controls. Allow enough recovery time for the network conditions without adding more delay than the workflow can tolerate.
- Configure encryption at both ends if needed. Check that both implementations support the selected settings and that they match.
- Start the receiver, then the sender as the implementation requires. Confirm that the receiver is getting media and check for continuity, delay, and connection errors. Product interfaces differ, so follow the relevant product documentation rather than assuming one universal sequence.
- Test under realistic conditions. Evaluate the link over the route and network conditions you expect to use. If packets are not recovered or the connection fails, revisit network access, endpoint compatibility, and the configured latency.
Haivision’s SRT Deployment Guide (version 1.5.3; page last updated February 13, 2026) covers concepts, compatibility, scenarios, and stream configuration. Exact controls and behavior are implementation- and version-dependent; consult the documentation for your specific sender and receiver.

Troubleshoot common SRT problems
- No connection: Verify that both endpoints support compatible SRT behavior, that the address and port are correct, and that network policy permits the required traffic. Try a supported rendezvous or outbound connection pattern if appropriate to your environment.
- Video or audio breaks up: Check available bandwidth and congestion first. A longer recovery window may give retransmissions more time, but it increases latency and cannot overcome a link that lacks sufficient capacity.
- Latency is higher than expected: Review the configured recovery window and the full workflow, including downstream processing. Reducing the SRT latency setting may reduce delay but also leaves less time to recover lost packets.
- Encrypted connection fails: Confirm that both ends support encryption and that encryption is enabled and configured compatibly. Do not assume that a setting on one endpoint configures the other.
- The destination rejects the feed: Confirm that the destination accepts SRT directly. If it does not, use an appropriate receiving or conversion stage rather than treating SRT as a universal platform input.
When dedicated SRT hardware makes sense
A dedicated SRT-capable encoder, decoder, or gateway can fit a broadcast or contribution workflow where managed equipment is useful. It is optional, not a prerequisite: software implementations are available through the open-source project. Before choosing equipment, verify the required SRT modes, encryption, network interfaces, and compatibility with the receiving service. Haivision describes SRT video streaming solutions and related equipment categories; the project README also includes sample tools such as srt-live-transmit. The README says its sample applications are instructional and should not be used in production without appropriate development and validation.
Or let it run in the cloud
SRT is for moving a live feed between compatible endpoints. If your goal instead is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that workflow: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
