If a SQL Server query is fast for some parameter values and slow for others, parameter sniffing may be involved—but a slow query by itself is not proof. SQL Server normally uses parameter values during compilation to choose an execution plan, then may reuse that plan for later executions. Trouble arises when the plan chosen for one data distribution performs poorly for materially different inputs.
OPTION (RECOMPILE) can make the optimizer compile a fresh plan for the current execution, but compilation costs CPU. Use it when evidence shows that a specific statement benefits enough to justify that cost, not as a blanket response to slowness.
What is SQL Server parameter sniffing?
When SQL Server compiles a parameterized query, it can use the parameter values available at compilation time to estimate how many rows the query will process and choose an execution plan. The compiled plan may then be reused for later executions. This behavior—often called parameter sniffing—is a normal part of plan optimization and reuse, not inherently a defect.
It becomes a performance problem when the first or otherwise compiled-for values are unrepresentative. For example, a plan suited to a parameter matching a small number of rows may be inefficient when reused for a value matching a large share of the table. Different inputs can favor different access methods, join strategies, or memory needs.

Why is a query slow for some parameter values but fast for others?
Parameter-sensitive performance means runtime changes materially with the values supplied, often because the data distribution is uneven and a reusable plan is a poor fit for some inputs. That pattern is a reason to investigate; it does not by itself prove parameter sniffing. A slow execution could have other causes, and a parameterized query can reuse one plan successfully when that plan serves its workload well.
Compare executions using representative parameter values. Inspect actual execution plans and Query Store history where available, looking for differences in runtime behavior and whether the same plan is reused across inputs with very different outcomes. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance treats improvement after removing the relevant cached plan as an indication of parameter sensitivity, not as a durable remedy: Microsoft’s parameter-sensitive plan troubleshooting guidance.

Avoid clearing the entire plan cache as a test or fix. Doing so forces plans to compile again and can cause one-time longer execution durations. If a targeted cache test is appropriate, use the specific plan handle rather than flushing unrelated plans; see Microsoft’s guidance on diagnosing parameter-sensitive plans.
What should you check before adding a hint?
- Verify the pattern. Compare representative parameter values, actual plans, and Query Store runtime data if available. Establish that the poor performance tracks value variation rather than assuming every slow execution is a sniffing problem.
- Review statistics and indexes. Check whether statistics reflect the current data distribution and perform needed statistics or index maintenance. Microsoft recommends addressing these fundamentals before evaluating Query Store hints: Query Store hints documentation.
- Check engine version and compatibility level. Record the SQL Server version and the database’s compatibility level. On eligible SQL Server 2022 (16.x) and later environments, Parameter Sensitive Plan (PSP) optimization is documented for compatibility level 160 and is on by default starting at that level. Test the compatibility-level change and examine Query Store for dispatcher and query variant plans; availability and behavior depend on the exact SQL Server or Azure SQL product and version. See Microsoft’s PSP optimization documentation.
- Test a targeted remedy. If the query remains sensitive, compare the narrowest viable intervention using representative values and the actual call frequency. Measure execution gains against compilation overhead and assess effects across the workload, not just one execution.
When should you use OPTION (RECOMPILE)?
Consider statement-level OPTION (RECOMPILE) when a particular statement’s performance varies significantly with its parameter values and compiling for the current execution is likely to produce a more suitable plan. With the hint, SQL Server compiles the statement using the current execution’s parameter values instead of relying on a reused plan for that statement.

The trade-off is compilation work on each execution. A query that runs very frequently may spend substantial CPU compiling, even if its execution plans improve. Compare that cost with the execution savings across the real distribution of parameter values. Scope the hint to the problem statement where possible; recompiling an entire stored procedure on every call is not a sensible default for a single-statement issue.
Also distinguish an explicit recompile hint from ordinary engine-driven recompilation. SQL Server can recompile automatically for reasons such as changes to cardinality estimates after statistics updates. Microsoft’s sp_recompile reference notes that proactively forcing recompilation is usually unnecessary: sp_recompile (Transact-SQL).

How do the main remedies compare?
| Option | What it changes | When it may fit | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
OPTION (RECOMPILE) |
Compiles the statement using current execution values. | A demonstrated problem is localized to a statement and value-specific plans are beneficial. | Compilation CPU on each execution; the hint prevents PSP from operating on that query. |
| PSP optimization | For eligible parameter-sensitive queries, supports multiple active plans. | The engine and database compatibility level support the feature and the query is eligible. | Requires the documented version and compatibility conditions; disabling parameter sniffing can disable PSP in associated workloads or contexts. |
OPTIMIZE FOR a representative value |
Optimizes using a chosen value rather than whichever value is present at compilation. | A known value is a reasonable stand-in for the workload’s important cases. | May fit that case while performing poorly for other parts of a skewed workload; reassess as data changes. |
OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN |
Uses density-vector average estimates rather than estimates based on the current parameter value. | A generic estimate performs more consistently than a plan tied to an atypical value. | An average may be unsuitable for extreme values or highly skewed distributions. |
| Disable parameter sniffing | Suppresses parameter-specific compilation behavior in its applicable scope. | A broader workload needs a generic-plan approach and targeted alternatives are unsuitable. | Trades parameter-specific plans for more generic behavior and can disable PSP for associated workloads or contexts. |
| Targeted plan-cache eviction | Removes a specific cached plan so a later execution compiles again. | A temporary diagnostic step or carefully chosen operational action is needed. | Does not prevent recurrence; recompilation adds work, and clearing the whole cache affects unrelated plans. |
| Query Store hint | Applies supported plan behavior without changing application query text. | Application code cannot readily be changed and the exact environment supports the desired hint. | Requires monitoring and retesting; for example, Query Store RECOMPILE hints are not supported when database parameterization is forced. |
These options are not interchangeable. Compare plan quality across skewed values, compilation cost and execution frequency, intervention scope, version and PSP eligibility, and how readily the change can be monitored, removed, and retested.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you manage Query Store hints?
Query Store hints can change query plan behavior without an application code change on supported environments, but they still need operational follow-up. Confirm that the exact SQL Server or Azure product and version supports the hint and that its constraints are met. Check hint application status, test changes before production use, and revisit the setting when data volume or distributions change and during database migrations.

Quick Recap
What does a sensible decision path look like?
- Confirm parameter sensitivity: compare representative inputs and inspect actual plans and Query Store runtime data. A generic complaint of slowness is not enough.
- Correct estimation inputs: review statistics and indexes before imposing plan behavior.
- Evaluate the platform: check version, compatibility level, and PSP eligibility; test an appropriate compatibility-level change where relevant.
- Compare narrowly scoped choices: test statement recompile, a representative
OPTIMIZE FORvalue, orOPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWNagainst the real input distribution and execution frequency. - Operate the change: monitor results, retain a way to remove the intervention, and retest as data or platform conditions change. Use cache eviction only as a targeted temporary action, not as a substitute for a lasting plan strategy.
