RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) sets up and controls the delivery of live or recorded audio and video. Think of it as a remote control for a media session: RTSP tells a server to prepare, start, pause or end delivery, while the media itself travels using a separately selected transport. It is not a video format or codec.

How RTSP works

The IETF describes RTSP as a “network remote control” for multimedia servers. A client and server establish a session, agree on how media will be delivered, and use RTSP requests to control that delivery. The presentation description identifies the media streams and can provide information such as resource identifiers, delivery protocol, transport parameters and encoding.

In a common simplified sequence, the client first obtains a presentation description, then negotiates transport and controls playback. Implementations can vary; not every camera or client supports every method or follows an identical setup sequence.

  1. DESCRIBE: The client requests a description of the presentation and its available media streams.
  2. SETUP: The client proposes transport parameters for a stream. The server selects supported parameters and establishes session state.
  3. PLAY: The client asks the server to begin delivery. PAUSE may be available when supported and appropriate.
  4. TEARDOWN: The client or server ends the session.

These are RTSP control messages; they do not mean that all audio or video data is carried inside those messages. The selected media transport carries the stream.

RTSP 2.0 and RTSP 1.0

RTSP 2.0 is defined by IETF RFC 7826, published in December 2016. It obsoletes RFC 2326, which specified RTSP 1.0 in 1998. The IETF says the versions are not backward compatible except for basic version negotiation, so an RTSP 1.0 client should not be assumed to work with an RTSP 2.0 server, or vice versa.

What port does RTSP use?

Under RFC 7826, the default port is 554 for an rtsp URI without an explicit port, and 322 for an rtsps URI without one. These are standard defaults, not a guarantee that a particular device uses them: its configured port and connection requirements may differ.

What an RTSP camera URL looks like

An RTSP URL identifies a stream endpoint. A generic form might include a scheme, host, optional port, path and, depending on the device, credentials. The exact path and login arrangement are manufacturer- and model-specific; there is no universal camera URL format.

TP-Link’s Tapo guide, last updated September 22, 2026, documents this pattern for supported cameras:

  • High-quality stream: rtsp://username:password@IP Address/stream1
  • Standard-quality stream: rtsp://username:password@IP Address/stream2

The guide gives port 554 as the default and says to create a camera account in the app; those credentials are separate from the Tapo account login. These paths and account details are specific to the documented Tapo setup, not a template that should be assumed to work on other brands. See TP-Link’s Tapo RTSP/ONVIF setup guide.

TP-Link lists VLC, Agent DVR, Synology Surveillance Station and compatible ONVIF software, NAS or NVR platforms as examples for viewing or managing supported camera streams. Its guide identifies the camera support it describes as ONVIF Profile S and notes that ONVIF can provide additional management features such as PTZ. This does not establish that every camera, client or recorder supports the same features; check compatibility for the exact devices you plan to use.

How to view an RTSP camera stream

  1. Confirm support and network access. Check the camera’s manual or manufacturer support page for RTSP support, the correct stream path, port, authentication setup and any required camera-account creation. Find the camera’s local IP address in its app or network settings.
  2. Choose compatible viewing software. Use a player, surveillance application, NAS or NVR that supports the camera’s RTSP stream and the transport it offers. TP-Link names VLC and several surveillance or recording options for its documented Tapo setup; that is not a compatibility guarantee for other equipment.
  3. Enter the device-specific URL. Supply the scheme, camera address, any configured port, the exact path and the required credentials in the client’s network-stream or camera-add interface. Keep the URL private if it contains a username, password or identifying stream path.
  4. Connect and verify playback. If the client cannot connect, verify the address and path, credentials, camera-account setup, port, local network reachability and whether the camera permits the requested transport. Consult the camera and client documentation for their specific settings.

Is RTSP secure?

Security depends on more than whether a URL begins with an RTSP scheme. RFC 7826 defines rtsps for secure transport using TLS, with default port 322 when no port is specified. The RFC requires RTSP clients and servers to support RTSP over TCP and recommends TLS; it also warns that HTTP authentication alone does not provide full RTSP message security.

Control signaling and media delivery are related but distinct security concerns. Protect credentials and stream identifiers, use authentication and encrypted transport where supported, and consider how the media itself is delivered and protected. A secure control connection alone does not establish that every part of a camera deployment is secure.

For its own setup, TP-Link advises using RTSP and ONVIF only on trusted local networks with encrypted Wi-Fi and says these protocols are not recommended for public networks. Avoid exposing a camera’s RTSP service directly to the internet unless you understand and have secured the complete network and device configuration.

Why RTSP can be difficult across networks

RTSP signaling can establish media streams that also need to pass through routers, firewalls or network address translation (NAT). That makes connectivity more complicated than simply reaching the RTSP server. RFC 7825 discusses NAT traversal as a source of serious problems without additional provisions. The IANA RTSP registry includes an ICE-related feature tag associated with RFC 7825, but whether it works depends on implementation support at both ends.

If a stream works on the camera’s local network but not remotely, investigate the network path and the camera, client or gateway’s supported traversal options rather than assuming the URL is wrong. Do not make a camera publicly reachable as a quick fix without addressing authentication, encryption and exposure risks.

RTSP compared with other streaming protocols

RTSP is best understood by its role: it controls a media session, while a negotiated transport carries the media. Whether it suits a particular task depends on what the camera, server and viewing software support, how the stream must cross networks, and the security required. A meaningful comparison with another protocol needs a specific use case and compatible products; RTSP alone does not establish that a solution is faster, lower-latency or better than alternatives.

Keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos

RTSP is used for controlling media sessions such as supported camera streams. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a different kind of service: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud rather than streaming from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-originated live streams. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
