RTMP is a protocol an encoder uses to send a live video feed to YouTube. To connect, copy the stream-specific Stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room into your encoder’s server or URL field, then copy the separate stream key into its Stream Key field. If you choose encrypted RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room and an encoder that supports it.
What an RTMP URL does
RTMP is a protocol for carrying a live stream from an encoder to YouTube. The URL identifies the YouTube ingest endpoint; the stream key identifies which live stream the encoder should send video to. You need to enter them in their corresponding fields, not treat the key as part of the URL.
YouTube supplies ingestion details for a particular stream. Do not assume a URL copied from a tutorial or another stream is universal. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes stream-specific primary and backup ingestion addresses and the associated stream name.
How to find and use your YouTube RTMP URL
- Open the stream in Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube and open its stream settings. Use the settings for the specific stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the Stream URL. In your encoder, paste it into the field labelled Server, URL, or RTMP Server. Field names vary by encoder.
- Copy the stream key separately. Paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
- Choose a YouTube preset if available. Some encoders offer a YouTube preset that fills in connection details. Confirm the selected endpoint and key correspond to the intended stream.
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live there when the preview and on-screen workflow are ready.
YouTube’s API documentation notes that some encoders accept the stream URL and stream name as separate values; others may require them combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow your encoder’s instructions and use the values YouTube provides for your stream.

RTMP versus RTMPS
RTMPS is RTMP sent through SSL/TLS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” The technical guide specifies port 443 and SNI (Server Name Indication) for RTMPS connections.

To reveal the encrypted address, select the lock icon in the Stream URL field in Live Control Room, then copy the RTMPS URL into a compatible encoder. Do not substitute an RTMP URL into an RTMPS configuration, or assume the endpoints are interchangeable. YouTube’s API exposes separate RTMP and RTMPS primary and backup address fields.

Common RTMP and RTMPS problems
- SSL certificate error: Check that you copied the RTMPS address, that it starts with
rtmps, and that the encoder supports the connection. YouTube’s technical guide specifies port 443 and correct SNI hostname indication for implementations. - Connection timeout: Verify that the encoder is making an SSL/TLS connection when using the RTMPS endpoint, rather than plain RTMP over TCP. Confirm the selected protocol matches the URL.
- No preview or the wrong stream appears: Re-copy the URL and key from the intended stream’s Live Control Room settings. Check that the URL is in the server/URL field and the key is in the Stream Key field.
- Backup ingestion address: YouTube’s API provides backup ingestion fields for supported workflows. Sending a simultaneous copy to a backup address is optional configuration, not a requirement for every stream.
