Apple added RCS to Messages in iOS 18, released in September 2024. It improves some conversations between iPhone and Android users, but it does not replace iMessage, and not every RCS chat is encrypted.
What is RCS texting?
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It is an industry messaging standard intended to make texting work more like a modern chat service across supported devices and networks. The GSMA’s Universal Profile defines shared features and technical requirements so participating services can interoperate.
In practical terms, RCS can add high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts, typing indicators and improved group messaging compared with traditional SMS/MMS. Which features work in a particular chat depends on device, software and carrier support; the standard does not guarantee that every conversation gets every feature.
Why did Apple adopt RCS?
Apple’s documented approach is to support an industry standard for messaging when iMessage is not being used. The GSMA announced RCS support on iPhone with iOS 18 and described the Universal Profile as available on both iOS and Android, making richer cross-platform messaging possible. That public context explains what the adoption is for; it does not establish Apple’s internal motives.

RCS is not a replacement for iMessage. In Apple Messages, iMessage remains the service for conversations between Apple devices when iMessage is available. RCS is an alternative for supported conversations where iMessage is not in use, including some iPhone-to-Android chats. Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS describes the differences.
What changes between iPhone and Android?
When an iPhone conversation uses RCS rather than SMS/MMS, it can support richer media, read receipts, typing indicators and better group messaging, provided the other device and carriers support the relevant features. The GSMA’s September 2024 announcement of RCS on iOS highlighted high-quality media sharing and improved group messaging as cross-platform benefits.

On iPhone, both RCS and SMS/MMS messages appear in green bubbles. Green therefore does not tell you which service carried a particular message; it only distinguishes those conversations from blue-bubble iMessage chats.
| Service | When it is used | Features and appearance | Encryption |
|---|---|---|---|
| iMessage | Apple-device conversation when iMessage is available | Apple’s messaging service; blue bubbles in Messages | End-to-end encrypted, according to Apple’s comparison page |
| RCS | When iMessage is not being used and RCS is available on the participating devices and carriers | Can support richer media, receipts, typing indicators and group features; green bubbles on iPhone | End-to-end encryption is conditional; check for the in-chat indicator |
| SMS/MMS | When iMessage or RCS is not used or available | Traditional text and picture messaging; green bubbles on iPhone | Not end-to-end encrypted |
Do you need to turn on RCS on your iPhone?
To use RCS on iPhone, Apple requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan with a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone. Availability varies by carrier. Check with your carrier if the setting is missing or RCS does not work.

- Update iOS: make sure the iPhone is running iOS 18 or later.
- Open the RCS setting: go to Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging.
- Enable RCS Messaging: turn on the option if it is available. Apple provides current instructions at Turn on RCS messaging on your iPhone.
- Confirm carrier support: if the option is unavailable or messages do not use RCS, ask whether your carrier supports RCS on iPhone and whether your plan is eligible.
RCS is provided through the carrier network, including when messages are sent over Wi-Fi or mobile data, according to Apple’s setup guidance. Apple says the iPhone exchanges identifiers with the carrier and its partners to authenticate and establish RCS service. These include the phone number and, depending on the carrier, the current IP address. See Apple’s support explanation for details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are RCS messages encrypted?
Not necessarily. End-to-end encryption depends on support across the conversation, not simply on the fact that a message uses RCS. Apple and Google announced on May 11, 2026 that encrypted RCS began rolling out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers, and for Android users on the latest Google Messages. That announcement describes a rollout, not universal availability.

Apple says the other participant’s carrier must also support encryption. When an RCS conversation is encrypted, Messages displays “Encrypted” and a lock icon. If that indicator is absent, Apple says the RCS messages are not protected from a third party reading them while they are sent between devices. Check the conversation itself rather than assuming encryption is enabled. Apple’s security guidance explains the indicator and requirements.
The GSMA’s Universal Profile 3.0 overview describes end-to-end encryption based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. A standard’s capabilities do not mean every carrier or device has deployed them, so the in-chat encryption indicator remains the practical check for an individual conversation.
