“Radium water” can mean groundwater containing naturally occurring radium or, historically, products deliberately marketed with radium as health remedies. Neither meaning describes a uniform beverage. The risk from groundwater depends on its radium concentration and how long someone drinks it: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says chronic exposure to high levels can increase the incidence of bone, liver or breast cancer. The way to find out whether your water is a concern is to check public-system reports or test a private well—not to rely on taste or appearance.
What does “radium water” mean?
Radium is a radioactive metal formed through the decay of uranium and thorium. It occurs naturally in rock, soil, water, plants and animals. As groundwater moves through rocks and soil, radium can dissolve into it; concentrations vary with local geology. Natural occurrence does not mean every water source contains a harmful amount. EPA says drinking-water concentrations are generally low, though some regions have higher levels because of their geology. EPA’s overview of radium explains its sources and health concerns.
The phrase also recalls historical products such as Radithor, a patent medicine marketed around 1928. That history involves deliberate promotion of radioactive products; it is distinct from the present-day concern about naturally occurring radium in some water sources. Historical marketing is not evidence that radium has health benefits.
Why can drinking water containing radium be dangerous?
When swallowed, radium contributes to radiation exposure inside the body. EPA states that “Chronic exposure to high levels of radium can result in an increased incidence of bone, liver or breast cancer.” The qualification matters: the cited health concern is about chronic exposure to high levels, not proof that any detectable radium causes immediate illness. EPA’s radium page describes the health effect.

Radioactive elements, including radium, can enter food and drinking water naturally. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that environmental radioactive material is generally present at low levels for most people; elevated or contaminated water is a different situation. That is why a finding needs to be interpreted against the measured concentration and exposure context, rather than treating every tap or well as dangerous. CDC’s information on naturally occurring radioactive elements provides more context.
What is the U.S. drinking-water limit?
EPA’s maximum contaminant level (MCL) for combined radium-226 and radium-228 in public drinking water is 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). It is a regulatory standard for public water systems, not a claim that water below the limit contains no radium. EPA says the 2000 radionuclides rule revised a regulation in place since 1977 and established revised monitoring requirements for community water systems. EPA’s radionuclides rule page describes the standard and rule history.

A USGS study published in 2012 found that 4.02% (39 of 971) of sampled raw-water samples in which both radium isotopes were measured exceeded the combined 5 pCi/L MCL. In samples where at least one isotope was measured, the proportion was 3.15% (40 of 1,266). The samples came from 15 principal and other major aquifer systems across 45 states. These are historical raw-water study results—not a current estimate of the share of Americans whose treated tap water exceeds the limit. The USGS study gives the sampling scope and results.
Is there radium in your drinking water?
It depends on the source and, for groundwater, local conditions. Public-system customers and private-well owners should take different steps because federal drinking-water requirements apply to public systems, not private wells in the same way.

If your water comes from a public system
Read the latest Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which the water supplier provides, and contact the supplier if radium is detected or the report’s treatment information is unclear. EPA directs public-water customers to these reports for information about local drinking water. EPA’s Consumer Confidence Report page explains how to find and use them.
If your water comes from a private well
Ask a qualified drinking-water laboratory or your state or local environmental or health office about testing for radium. Private-well owners are responsible for making sure their water is safe; EPA does not regulate private wells under the same federal requirements that apply to public systems. EPA’s private-well guidance explains the distinction.

Taste, smell and appearance cannot establish whether a well contains radium. A generic water-quality strip or a map alone cannot tell you the concentration in your particular well, either. A water sample analyzed by a qualified laboratory is needed to assess that source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you respond to an elevated test result?
First, discuss the result with the laboratory, state or local health office, or a qualified water-treatment professional. Ask which isotopes were measured, how the result compares with the applicable standard, and what treatment scale fits your household. Treatment should be chosen based on the measured water quality and household needs, not a generic product claim.

USGS identifies ion exchange and reverse osmosis as treatment approaches. Its guidance describes whole-house ion exchange and household reverse-osmosis (RO) systems that generally produce small volumes at a point of use, rather than treating the whole house. The guidance is from 2010, so it supports these treatment categories—not the performance of any specific retail model. The USGS treatment fact sheet discusses these options.
| Approach | Scale and considerations |
|---|---|
| Ion exchange | USGS describes ion exchange, including water softeners, as an option that can be used for whole-house treatment. It also removes calcium and magnesium, replacing them with sodium; this may matter to people limiting sodium. System fit depends on water chemistry and household needs. |
| Reverse osmosis | USGS describes household RO as a point-of-use approach that generally produces small volumes and is not suitable for whole-house treatment. Whether a particular system is appropriate depends on the measured water and its verified radium performance. |
Neither category should be treated as a blanket guarantee. Before choosing a system, ask a qualified professional about maintenance and how waste from the chosen treatment will be handled. Treatment removes or concentrates contaminants; do not assume it destroys radioactive material. Check independent test evidence or certification for the exact system configuration and radium claim. The USGS guidance identifies treatment approaches but does not establish performance for specific retail products.
