QSSR means Quick Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s AI-upscaling feature announced for PS5. PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s higher-tier upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. QSSR is designed as a more performance-conscious way to bring AI-guided upscaling to PS5; Sony has not published a matched test showing how its image quality or performance compares numerically with PSSR.
What QSSR does on PS5
Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, describing it as a new performance tier of AI upscaling. Its purpose is to reconstruct an image at a higher output resolution from a game’s rendered image, while preserving or adding visible detail. Sony says its earlier PSSR approach had computational demands that made it impractical to bring to PS5, so QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on the console.
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability. Those are qualitative claims: the announcement did not provide target resolutions, the feature’s hardware cost, frame-time figures, image-quality measurements, or controlled before-and-after tests. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald described clearer, more stable pixel-level detail in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry likewise said Ghost of Yōtei would gain clarity and detail. These are studio impressions, not independent measurements. Sony’s QSSR announcement.
QSSR vs. PSSR: what is different?
| Comparison | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Quick Spectral Super Resolution | PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution |
| Console Sony associates it with | PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Sony’s description | A performance-oriented AI-upscaling tier for PS5, using a streamlined neural network and a tuned implementation | An AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling; Sony calls it the gold standard on PS5 Pro |
| Claimed benefits | Improved image detail and stability | The upgraded version aims for more precise reconstruction, clearer fine detail, improved motion stability, and developer flexibility |
| Direct comparative benchmark | Not stated in Sony’s QSSR announcement | Not stated in Sony’s cited PSSR update |
The distinction is about each feature’s intended place in Sony’s console lineup and implementation, not a published scorecard. Sony positions QSSR as the lower-computation route for PS5 and PSSR as its higher-tier solution for PS5 Pro. It has not reported a direct QSSR-versus-PSSR test establishing which is sharper, more stable, or faster under matched conditions. The word “Quick” in QSSR’s name is not evidence of a specific speed advantage in gameplay.

Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That is a dated count for PSSR, not a count of QSSR-supported games. Sony’s PSSR announcement.
Which games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles. Its October 1 announcement said both were being patched that day to add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony also said it would offer the technology broadly to PlayStation developers, but did not publish a complete future game list. Check a title’s current patch notes for later support; an announcement that QSSR is available to developers does not mean every PS5 game uses it.

How PSSR support and settings differ
In a March 16, 2026 update, Sony discussed support or planned adoption of PSSR in SILENT HILL 2, SILENT HILL f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Sony said Crimson Desert would adopt the upgraded version at launch, while Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 were due to receive patches in the coming weeks. This is Sony’s dated announcement list, not a live compatibility database; availability may have changed since then. Sony’s March 2026 PSSR update.
For supported PS5 Pro games, Sony says owners can enable “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in system settings. Sony cautions that results vary by title and says users can turn off the optional enhancement if they encounter unexpected visual effects. This setting concerns PSSR on PS5 Pro; Sony has not described it as a QSSR control for standard PS5.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from the comparison
The available Sony announcements explain the intended roles of the two technologies, but they do not establish a universal image-quality winner. Results depend on implementation in each game, and Sony’s own PSSR update says title results may vary. A meaningful independent comparison would need to test the same scene and output conditions, examining fine-detail reconstruction, flicker and stability in motion, visual artifacts, performance behavior, and the options each game exposes. Until matched results are published, claims that one is a specific percentage faster or sharper than the other are unsupported.
