Proton Lumo is an AI assistant from Proton that the company says is designed to keep conversations private. It launched on July 23, 2025, with guest access available without an account, encrypted chat history for signed-in users, and optional web search. Proton’s privacy protections are notable, but they are vendor claims, and features such as web search and persistent history involve different data flows.
What is Proton Lumo?
Lumo is Proton’s AI chatbot for tasks such as summarizing documents, rewriting emails, and answering questions. At its July 23, 2025 launch, Proton said people could use it on the web, Android, and iPhone, including without creating an account. The company presented it as suitable for sensitive tasks such as summarizing private documents or asking personal health questions, while advising users through its privacy design rather than claiming that AI answers are a substitute for professional advice. Those launch capabilities have since evolved. A July 11, 2026 report from TechRadar Pro says Lumo 2.0 added reasoning modes, image generation and recognition, live web search with citations, persistent memory, and customizable assistants. These are time-sensitive product details, so check Proton’s current Lumo page for the latest availability and plan limits.
How private is Lumo?
Proton says it uses TLS to protect data in transit and zero-access encryption for stored chat history. In Proton’s account-based experience, the stored history is encrypted so Proton says it cannot read it. That is a claim about encrypted storage; it should not be confused with a blanket guarantee that every part of an AI conversation is end-to-end encrypted while the assistant is processing it.

Proton’s no-logs policy says prompts and responses are erased from its servers after processing. It also says conversations are not used to train models, except where a user explicitly permits anonymized feedback for Apertus 1.5. Web search is off unless the user enables it. Turning it on adds an external retrieval step to a conversation: Proton says it selected search providers with privacy, performance, efficiency, and reliability in mind, but a search-enabled request is not the same as a conversation answered solely from the assistant’s existing model. Can you use Lumo without an account?
Yes. Proton said at launch that anyone could start a chat without an account, and that users could also connect through Tor. Guest access is useful when you do not want to sign in, but signed-in use provides a secure chat history. Proton describes Ghost mode as making the active conversation disappear when the window closes; it is the option to consider when you do not want that conversation retained in your chat history. What can Lumo do?
At launch, Proton described familiar assistant tasks: summarizing, rewriting, answering questions, working with uploaded files, and searching the web when the user enabled it. The 2026 TechRadar Pro report on Lumo 2.0 describes a broader feature set, including image recognition and generation, reasoning modes, persistent memory, customizable assistants, and live search with citations. Because that report is dated July 11, 2026, these additions and their availability should be checked against Proton’s current product information rather than treated as permanent plan features.

What does Lumo Plus include?
TechRadar Pro reported on July 11, 2026 that Lumo has a free tier, Lumo Plus at $12.99 per month, and Lumo Professional at $14.99 per user. These are secondary-source prices reported on that date, not a guarantee of current or recurring charges; Proton’s own checkout and plan page are the authoritative places to confirm current pricing, limits, and included features. The report does not establish the exact usage limits or a complete feature-by-feature plan comparison, so those details should not be inferred from the prices alone.

Lumo’s clearest point of distinction is Proton’s documented privacy posture: the company says it erases prompts and responses after processing, encrypts stored history with zero-access encryption, and does not train on conversations by default. The other services should be evaluated using their own current policies and settings; a full one-to-one comparison cannot be established from those Lumo-specific claims alone.

For any assistant, compare the operator and jurisdiction, whether sign-in is required, what is retained on servers, whether conversations may be used for training, whether web search is on by default, citation quality, supported models and media, and the limits of free and paid plans. Lumo’s search being opt-in is a meaningful control, but optional search changes how an answer is sourced. Its 2026 feature and pricing picture is also changing quickly, so compare current plan pages rather than relying on a dated summary.
